NATIONAL NEWS
1 Madhya Pradesh follows Karnataka’s lead, implements NEP 2020 in State
Education and education policy in the country has undergone a sea
change in the past few years in India.
The Government introduced the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020,
with the goal to transform and provide world-class education facilities to
students.
Aligning with the aim of the Central Government, Madhya Pradesh on
Thursday, August 26 officially launched NEP 2020 in the State, becoming
the second state to do so.
Prior to it, Karnataka officially implemented the new National Education
Policy 2020. Chief Minister, Shivraj Singh Chouhan while launching the
policy in the State, said that the policy will prove beneficial for the
generations to come.
The aim of education is to impart knowledge, skills, and values of
citizenship & the NEP 2020 has this.
This policy allows you to study Physics and Chemistry as well as become a
scholar of Hindi or Sanskrit.
2 Pradhan Mantri Jan-Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) completes seven years of
successful implementation
The Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojna (PMJDY)-National Mission for
Financial Inclusion is marking its 7th anniversary on August 28, 2021.
The PMJDY was announced by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi on
August 15, 2014 and was officially launched on August 28.
As on August 18, 2021, total number of total PMJDY Accounts opened are
43.04 Crore, of which 36.86 crore (85.6%) are operative.
From this 55.47% (23.87 crore) Jan-Dhan account holders are women and
66.69% (28.70 crore) Jan Dhan accounts are in rural and semi-urban areas.
3. Govt recognises NBF-PNBSA as self-regulatory body for news media
Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has officially recognized
NBF’s Professional News Broadcasters Standards Authority (‘PNBSA’).
Professional News Broadcasters Standards Authority (‘PNBSA’) is a self-
regulatory body of the News Broadcasters Federation (NBF) for news
media. Now it has been officially recognized by the government.
News Broadcasters Federation (NBF) is the largest association of news
broadcasters across India representing combined interests and perspectives
on the crucial matters related to the news broadcasting industry.
Arnab Goswami is the current president of the News Broadcasters
Federation (NBF).

4.Lieutenant Governor RK Mathur inaugurates 2-Day Ladakh Nomadic
Festival at Korzok Phu
Ladakh Lieutenant Governor, RK Mathur has inaugurated 2-Day
Ladakh Nomadic Festival at Korzok Phu, Changthang region of eastern
Ladakh.
The festival is organized by Ladakh Cultural Academy in collaboration with
Ladakh Tourism Dept to bring the distinctive culture of the Changthang
region on the tourism map of Ladakh.
On the first day tourists had the opportunity to witness a nomad’s lifestyle
in their own environment.
5. Punjab Govt launches 'Innovation Mission Punjab' to boost start-up sector
CM Amarinder Singh launched 'Innovation Mission Punjab.
It is a public-private partnership that brings in global investors and experts
to catalyze start ups.
The Mission will mobilise a global pool of ambassadors and partners for
investment, mentorship and market access.
Besides, the Innovation Mission Punjab will act as a catalyst to strengthen
by rallying all the stakeholders viz. academia, incubators, investors,
startups, govt, farmers etc.
6. J-K LG Sinha inaugurates 'Saath' initiative for women associated with
SHGs
Jammu and Kashmir LG Manoj Sinha launched Rural
Enterprises Acceleration Programme titled 'Saath' for Self Help Group
(SHG) women.
This Saath initiative will stress on mentoring and market linkages of
products created by these women.
This will transform the lives of these women and make them independent
and strong in social and financial aspects.
This initiative aims to teach women such skills and convert their businesses
into Higher Order Enterprises.
7. Assam govt renamed Rajiv Gandhi National Park as Orang National Park
The Assam govt decided to rename Rajiv Gandhi National Park as Orang
National Park.
Covering an area of 79.28 sq km, it was declared a wildlife sanctuary in
1985, and a national park in 1999.
This park is located on the north bank of the Brahmaputra in Darrang and
Sonitpur districts and is known for wild animals like Royal Bengal Tiger,
Indian Rhinos, Pgmy Hog, and wild elephants.

8. Alejandro Prieto wins Bird Photographer of the Year 2021
Mexican photographer Alejandro Prieto has won the Bird Photographer of
the Year award 2021.
His photo features a roadrunner at a new section of the border wall between
Mexico and the USA.
Prieto wins the top prize of £5,000 and the prestigious title.
His image also won Gold Award in the Birds in the Environment category.
His photo was selected from more than 22,000 submissions by
photographers from around the world.
INTERNATIONAL NEWS & FOREIGN AFFAIRS
1.India signs pact with Maldives for $500 million Greater Male Connectivity
Project
Govt of India and Maldives has inked contract for the mega Greater
Male Connectivity project (GMCP), which is the largest-ever civilian
infrastructure project in Maldives.
India is funding the implementation of GMCP through $ 400 million Line
of Credit (LoC) and $ 100 million grant.
LoC will be provided by the Export-Import Bank of India (Exim Bank).
Project will be developed by the Indian construction and engineering firm,
AFCONS, Mumbai.
GMCP comprise of 6.74 km long bridge.
2.Australia, Malaysia, Singapore and South Africa launch CBDC Scheme
Central banks in Australia, Singapore, Malaysia and South Africa have
launched digital currencies (CBDC) scheme.
It is a cross border payments trial that uses different central bank digital
currencies (CBDC) in order to assess if this allows transactions to be settled
in a cheap and easy manner.
Many govt and central banks are exploring the use of CBDCs.
This latest project aims to develop prototype shared platforms for cross-
border transactions using multiple CBDCs.

1.IPS officer Pankaj Kumar Singh takes charge as new BSF chief
Pankaj Kumar Singh (1988-batch IPS officer from Rajasthan cadre) took
over as the Director General (DG) of Border Security Force.

He replaced SS Deswal, who was holding the DG post since Rakesh
Asthana moved to Delhi Police.

Pakistan and Bangladesh.
2.Nine New Supreme Court Judges took oath
Chief Justice of India N V Ramana administered the oath of nine new
judges, including 3 women judges, took oath as Supreme Court judges.
With the swearing-in of the nine new judges, total strength of Supreme
Court has increased to 33, including the CJI.

The nine new judges are: Abhay Shreeniwas Oka, Vikram Nath, Jitendra

3.Amul ranks 18th in Rabobank 2021 Global Dairy Top 20 Report
Amul has dropped two places to rank 18th in Rabobank’s 2021 Global
Top 20 Dairy Companies list with an annual turnover of $5.3 billion.
Amul was placed at 16th spot in 2020.
French-based dairy company Lactalis has topped the list as the world’s
largest dairy company with turnover of US $23.0 billion, followed by
Nestle.
Rabobank’s Global Diary Top 20 Report is released annually to rank the
dairy industry upon their sales data and financial statements.
4.Smriti Irani launches Poshan 2.0, urges districts to set up Poshan Vatikas
Women and Child Development Minister Smriti Irani inaugurated Poshan
2.0, during the nutrition month starting from September 1 for the protection
of Severe Actual Malnourished (SAM) children.
She urged all aspirational districts of the country to make a commitment to
establish a ‘Poshan Vatika’.
POSHAN Abhiyan was launched in 2018 to combat malnutrition.

1.RBI enhances limit under Indo-Nepal Remittance Facility to Rs 2 lakh

The Reserve Bank of India has increased the limit of fund transfer under
the Indo-Nepal Remittance Facility Scheme from Rs 50,000 per transaction
to Rs 2 lakh per transaction.
Earlier there was a ceiling limit of 12 transactions in a year. Now, this limit
has also been removed.
However, for cash-based transfers under the Indo-Nepal Remittance
Facility, the per transaction limit of Rs 50,000 will still be present with a
maximum number of transfers in a year allowed at 12.
2.PhonePe receives direct broking licence from IRDAI
PhonePe has received an insurance broking license from Insurance
Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI).
With the new ‘direct broking’ license, PhonePe can now distribute
insurance products from all insurance companies in India on its platform.
It will allow PhonePe to start offering personalised product
recommendations to its 300-plus million users.
PhonePe entered the insure-tech sector in January 2020 but with a limited
insurance corporate agent licence.
3.IDBI Bank to divest its entire 19.18% stake in ARCIL
IDBI Bank has announced that board of IDBI Bank has approved to divest
its entire stake of 19.18% in Asset Reconstruction Company (India) Limited
(ARCIL).
Board has approved a proposal for the sale of IDBI Bank's entire holding of
6,23,23,800 fully paid-up equity shares of ARCIL.
ARCIL: Oldest ARC entities operating in India and was founded in 2002.
Headquarters: Mumbai, Maharashtra.
ARCIL is owned by SBI, IDBI Bank, ICICI Bank, PNB, and other foreign
investors.
4.PFRDA increases the entry age in National Pension System to 70 years

Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) has
increased the entry age for National Pension System (NPS) from 65 years to
70 years.
Prior to this, eligible age to invest in NPS was 18-65 years which has now
been revised to 18-70 years.
As per the revised norms, any Indian Citizen, resident or non-resident and
Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) between 65 to 70 years can join NPS and
continue or defer their NPS Account till 75 years.
5.PayU to acquire Indian digital payments provider BillDesk for $4.7 bn
Netherlands-based Prosus NV has announced to acquire the Indian
digital payments provider BillDesk and merge it with its own fintech service
business PayU for $4.7 billion.
This acquisition will make the combined entity of PayU and BillDesk as the
leading online payment providers globally and in India by total payment
volume.
Transaction is subject to approval from Competition Commission of India
(CCI).
It will also raise Prosus’s investement into India to $10 billion.
6.Google Pay launches digital FD in tie-up with Equitas Small Finance Bank
Equitas Small Finance Bank (SFB) has launched a new initiative enabling
Google Pay users to book fixed deposits (FDs).
Initially, this functionality will be available for Google Pay users who are
accessing the app from Android.
The deposits in Equitas are covered by a deposit guarantee upto ₹5 lakh per
depositor.
On maturity, principal and interest of the FD go directly to the Google Pay
user’s existing bank account.

7.New Development Bank approves Bangladesh as a new member
The New Development Bank has approved Bangladesh as its new member.
The NDB Board of Governors initiated the negotiation to expand its
membership in 2020.
It has now approved the United Arab Emirates, Uruguay and Bangladesh as
its first new member countries.
Since the beginning of its operations, NDB has approved about 80 projects
totaling a portfolio of USD 30 billion.
NDB was established by the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South
Africa) countries.
8.RBI to set up five-member panel on NUE licences

The RBI will set up a committee to scrutinize applications and
give recommendations on new umbrella entity (NUE) licences.
The 5-member committee will be headed by RBI chief general manager P
Vasudevan
NUEs will establish their own payment infrastructure to compete with
NPCI.
The system will be focussed on small and medium enterprises, merchants
and consumers.
The RBI had in August 2020 issued guidelines for creating “for-profit
NUEs”.
9.Finance Minister attends 11th UK-India Economic and Financial Dialogue
The 11th India-UK Economic and Financial Dialogue was held virtually.
FM Nirmala Sitharaman and the UK Treasury Chancellor Rishi Sunak co-
chaired the meeting.
The Dialogue covered discussions on economic cooperation on multilateral
issues, including G-20 and COP-26.
Private sector initiatives under India-UK Financial Partnership and India-
UK Sustainable Finance Working Group including its progress were also
discussed.

1.Meity Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar launches India’s first Quantum
Computer Simulator (QSim) toolkit
The Union Minister of Electronics and Information Technology (Meity)
Rajeev Chandrasekhar, launched India’s first indigenously developed
Quantum Computer Simulator (QSim) Toolkit, on August 27, 2021.
The first-of-its-kind QSim toolkit has been developed jointly by IISc
(Indian Institute of Science) Bangalore, IIT (Indian Institute of Technology)
Roorkee and C-DAC (Centre for Development of Advanced Computing).
The vital tool will enable learning and understanding the practical aspects of
Quantum Computing in a cost-effective manner.
2. BRICS-Agricultural Research Platform operationized to strengthen
cooperation in agricultural research & innovations
Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Shri Narendra
Singh has announced the operationalization of the BRICS Agricultural
Research Platform (BRICS- ARP) for strengthening the cooperation of
BRICS member nations in the field of agricultural research & innovations.
The BRICS- Agricultural Research Platform has been prepared and set up in
India. The Coordinating Centre of the BRICS Agricultural Research
Platform is housed at NASC Complex, Pusa, New Delhi.

3.Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh Commissions Indigeneously built ICGS
‘Vigraha’
Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh dedicated to the nation, the indigenously
built Coast Guard Ship ‘Vigraha’ on August 28, 2021, in Chennai, Tamil
Nadu.
The ICGS Vigraha, is the seventh and final ship in the series of Offshore
Patrol Vessels (OPVs), the agreement for which was signed in 2015.
The ship has been designed and built indigenously by Larsen & Toubro
Ship Building Limited.
It will be based in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh and operate on the
eastern seaboard under the Operational and Administrative Control of the
Commander, Coast Guard Region (East).
With the joining of this ship, the Indian Coast Guard now have 157 Ships
and 66 Aircraft in its inventory.
4.Govt sets up panel to develop technological platform for revenue litigation
Central Govt has set up a committee to develop a technological
platform streamlining the appeal filing process related to direct and indirect
taxation matters.
Committee is headed by Ashish Shiradhonkar, head of the e-courts project
in the National Informatics Centre (NIC).
Committee will complete its work in 3 months and will have members from
the revenue dept, CBDT and CBIT.
NIC is collaborating to integrate Legal Information Management and
Briefing System with e-office mechanism.
5.NSG commandos undertake mock counter-terrorist drills ‘Gandiv’
National Security Guard (NSG) has conducted week-long counter-
terrorism exercise titled ‘Gandiv’ from 22 to 28 August, 2021.
It is the 3rd edition of the annual drill, that was held at multiple cities in UP,
Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and NCR by NSG to check its response time and
reaction to hostage and hijack-like situations.
Aim: Enhancing the counter-terror skills of the state administration, police,
anti-terrorist squads and also create awareness among the public.
6.IIT Madras to launch online platform ‘E-Source’ to tackle e-Waste
IIT Madras is developing an innovative digital model to address the
problem of e-waste (electronic wastes).

This e-waste digital platform will be named as ‘e-Source’.
It will act as an exchange platform to serve as an online marketplace for
Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE).

The initiative is being led by Indo-German Centre for Sustainability (IGCS).
7.Union Minister launches e-GOPALA web version
Union Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying, Parshottam
Rupala has launched E-GOPALA web version to aid dairy farmers.
It has been developed by National Dairy Development Board (NDDB).
Along with this, i-MAP web portal has also been launched that provides
real-time information to dairy farmers for better productivity of dairy
animals.
This portal will facilitate real time checking of coverage and progress of
various projects and government schemes.
8.India conducts maiden Maritime Partnership Exercise with Algerian Navy
INS Tabar is participating in the Maiden Maritime Partnership Exercise
with Algerian Navy, off the Algerian coast, in the Mediterranean Sea.
Algerian Naval Ship ANS Ezzadjer participated in this exercise.
Aim: to enhance interoperability, understand the concept of operations and
open the possibility of increasing interaction and collaboration between the
two navies in the future.
INS Tabar is a Talwar-class stealth Frigate built in Russia for the Indian
Navy.
9.Dorje Angchuk becomes first Indian to be inducted as IAU Honorary
Member
Ladakh based Dorje Angchuk has been inducted as an Honorary Member of
the International Astronomical Union (IAU).
He is an Engineer in charge at the Indian Astronomical Observatory of the
Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA) at Hanle in Ladakh region.
He is the first and only Indian to be inducted in IAU, among 10 members
around the world.
He has been selected for ‘his passionate promotion of astronomy in the
Ladakh region, through his excellent astrophotography’.
10.FICCI organizes BRICS Film Technology Symposium
Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur inaugurated the first
ever BRICS Film Technology Symposium.

11.Indian Navy seals contract with BEL to procure naval anti-drone system
The Indian Navy signed a contract with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL)
for the supply of the first indigenously developed Naval Anti Drone System
(NADS).
The NADS, developed by the DRDO and manufactured by BEL.
It is the first indigenously developed anti-drone system to be inducted into
the Indian armed forces.
The NADS can instantly detect micro drones and uses a laser-based "kill
mechanism" to terminate the targets.
12.Indian Navy hands over two Mobile Oxygen Plants to Bangladesh
Indian Navy Offshore Patrol Vessel, INS Savitri delivered two Mobile
Oxygen Plants to Bangladesh to support its effort to fight the COVID 19.
Each of the MOPs has the capacity to generate 960 litres of Oxygen per
minute.
The MOPS have been developed and manufactured by DRDO in India.
The MOPs are fully equipped and state of Art plants which can generate
medical oxygen in a highly cost effective manner on site.
13.AYUSH Ministry launches campaign of distributing Ayush prophylactic
medicine
AYUSH Ministry has launched a campaign of distributing
Ayush prophylactic medicines and written guidelines on diet and lifestyle in
New Delhi.

The kit of Ayurveda prophylactic medicines for COVID-19 contains

Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Medicines (CCRAS).

1.Bangladeshi vaccine scientist wins Ramon Magsaysay award
Bangladeshi vaccine scientist Dr. Firdausi Qadri along with other 4 were
conferred with Ramon Magsaysay Award 2021.
She is an emeritus at the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease
Research, Bangladesh.
Other winners are Muhammad Amjad Saqib (Microfinance pioneer,
Pakistan), Roberto Ballon (Environmentalist), Steven Muncy (Social
Activist) and Watchdoc (Indonesia) for journalism.
Known as Nobel Prize in Asia, Ramon Magsaysay award was established in
1957.

1.Yogesh Kathuniya wins silver in discus throw at Tokyo Paralympics 2020
India’s discus thrower, Yogesh Kathuniya (24 years) has clinched a silver
medal at 2020 Tokyo Paralympics in the men’s Discus Throw F56 final
event.
He claimed the second spot with a throw of 44.38m.
Batista dos Santos from Brazil has won gold and was setting a Paralympics
record with a throw of 45.59m.
Diaz Aldana from Cuba bagged bronze.
He won a bronze medal in the 2019 World Para Athletics Games in Dubai
with the best throw of 42.51m.
2.Stuart Binny announces retirement from all forms of cricket
Indian all-rounder Stuart Binny has announced his retirement from all forms
of cricket on 30th August 2021.
He had represented Team India in six Tests, 14 ODIs and three T20Is,
scoring a total of 459 runs and 24 wickets.
He played for the Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League.
He holds the record of the best bowling figures in ODI format.
He played 95 First-class games in his 17-year career scoring 4796 runs and
picking 148 wickets.
3.Javelin Thrower Sumit Antil wins Gold for India at Tokyo Paralympics

India’s Sumit Antil (23 years) has won Gold Medal in men’s javelin throw
F64 final event at 2020 Tokyo Paralympics.
She set a new world record throw of 68.55m, winning second gold medal
for India at Tokyo Paralympics Games.
Michal Burian of Australia won the silver medal (66.29m), while Sri
Lanka’s Dulan Kodithuwakku won bronze medal.
Now, total medal tally of India has reached 7.
Bronze medal won by Vinod Kumar in the discus throw F56 final was
declared as ineligible.
4.Praveen Kumar bags silver medal in High Jump T64 in Tokyo Paralympics
At Tokyo Paralympics, Indian Para-athlete Praveen Kumar bagged the
silver medal in Men’s High Jump T64 event.
Praveen jumped 2.07 metre while Great Britain’s Jonathan Broom-Edwards
took the gold with a season-best of 2.10 metre in the event.
With the win, India’s medal tally at Tokyo Paralympics has risen to 11 with
two Gold medals, six Silver and three Bronze medals.
OBITUARIES
1.Legendary cricket coach Vasoo Paranjape passed away
Former Indian cricketer and renowned coach, Vasudeo Paranjape (82
years) passed away in Mumbai, Maharashtra due to age related illness.
He played a crucial role in shaping the careers of numerous Indian cricket
players.
He was popularly known as Vasoo.
He had played in 29 first-class matches for Mumbai and Baroda cricket
team, with 785 runs.
He was the father of Jatin Paranjape, former national selector and cricketer.
2.Bigg Boss 13 winner Sidharth Shukla passes away
Actor Sidharth Shukla (40) passed away due to a massive heart attack.
Well known for being the winner of popular reality show Bigg Boss 13,
Sidharth Shukla started his career with the show Babul Ka Aangann
Chootey Na.
In 2014, Sidharth Shukla also made his Bollywood debut.
He featured in Karan Johar-produced and Varun Dhawan-Alia Bhatt starrer,
Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania.
Recently, the actor made guest appearances on various reality shows
including Bigg Boss OTT.

1.National Sports Day 2021: 29 August
In India, the National Sports Day is observed every year on 29 August, on
the occasion of the birth anniversary of hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand.
The National Sports Day, also known as Rashtriya Khel Divas, was
celebrated for the first time in 2012.
The day is used as a platform to launch various sports schemes as well as
organise various sporting events and seminars to spread awareness about the
importance of physical activities and sports in life.
Major Dhyan Chand Singh Major Dhyan Chand is regarded as India’s greatest hockey player of all time.
He won Olympics gold medals for India in the years 1928, 1932 and 1936. He has
scored over 400 goals in his career, from 1926 to 1948.
He was popularly known as “The Wizard” for his magical touch, superb control,
creativity and extraordinary goal-scoring feats.
2.International Day for People of African Descent 2021: 31st August
The International Day for People of African Descent is celebrated for the
first time on 31 August 2021. The United Nations aims to promote the
extraordinary contributions of the African diaspora around the world and to
eliminate all forms of discrimination against people of African descent.
History of the day: The year 2020 marked the midterm of the International Decade for People of
African Descent. While some progress has been made at legislative, policy and

June 2020, the Human Rights Council adopted the resolution on the “Promotion
and protection of the human rights and fundamental freedoms of Africans and
