DLW inlays with tradition
Since the start of the twentieth century, architects
have been decorating fl oors with linoleum inlays to
make them look as valuable and attractive as the
tapestries on the wall, the velvet curtains at the
windows, and the rustling taffeta skirt belonging to
the lady of the house. Even the modernists who were
averse to the decorations of the past still continued
to use inlays: The boudoir in Brugg, Switzerland,
can be dated back to 1926, while the fl oor from 1956
in the reception area at the Neckarwerke plant in
Ludwigsburg no longer exists. The colourful inlays on
the fl oor used to coordinate with the two-tone neon
lighting on the ceiling.
While the tastes of this time have not quite made the
transition to present day, the modernist style certainly
has. Examples of the present design can be found in
Bauhaus, de Stijl and constructivism.
Monument conservationists looking to restore an
earlier fl oor covering pattern can do so using modern
inlay technology. This is how Peter Behrens‘ inlaid
fl oor in the Bremen town hall was reconstructed, for
example. Linoleum inlays make use of the special
features of this material, which make it easy to cut
and can be put together seamlessly.
