Part Numbers: UDN2540B and A2540SLBCombining logic gates and inverting high-currentbipolar outputs, these quad Darlington power driversprovide interface between low-level signal-processingcircuits and power loads totaling 360 W. Each of the fourindependent outputs can sink up to 1.8 A in the ON statewith peak inrush currents to 2.5 A. The four poweroutputs are each comprised of an open-collectorDarlington driver and an internal flyback/clamp diode forswitching inductive leads. They feature a minimumbreakdown and sustaining voltage of 50 V. The logicinputs are compatible with TTL and 5 V CMOS logicsystems.
Typical applications include print heads, relays, solenoids, and dc stepping motors. These drivers can alsobe used to drive high-current incandescent lamps, LEDS,and heaters

2916 THRU 2919 AND 6219DUAL FULL-BRIDGE PWM MOTOR DRIVERS (CONT’D)
Dual full-bridge motor drivers are designed todrive both windings of a bipolar stepper motor orbidirectionally control two dc motors. Both bridgesinclude internal pulse-width modulation (PWM)control of the output current. Satlington outputscombine the low voltage drop of a saturated transistorand the high peak current capability of a Darlington.
For PWM current control, the maximum outputcurrent is determined by the user’s selection of areference voltage and sensing resistor. With quarter-step operation, two logic-level inputs select outputcurrent limits of 0, 33 or 41, 67, or 100% of themaximum level. A PHASE input to each bridgedetermines load current direction.
The bridges include both ground clamp andflyback diodes for protection against inductive tran-sients. Internally generated delays prevent cross-overcurrents when switching current direction. Specialpower-up sequencing is not required. Thermal pro-tection circuitry disables the outputs if the chiptemperature exceeds safe operating limits.

2962DUAL HALF-BRIDGE PWM SOLENOID/MOTOR DRIVER
Features
4 A Peak Output 45 V Min. Sustaining Voltage Internal Clamp Diodes TTL/PMOS/CMOS Compatible Inputs High-Speed Chopper
Part Number: UDN2962W
Using PWM to minimize power dissipation andmaximize load efficiency, this dual driver is recom-mended for impact printer solenoids and steppermotors. It is comprised of two source/sink driverpairs and can be connected to drive two independentloads or a single load in the full-bridge configuration. Both drivers include output clamp/flyback diodes, input gain and level shifting, a voltage regulator forsingle-supply operation, and pulse-width modulatedoutput-current control circuitry. Inputs are compat-ible with most TTL, DTL, LSTTL, and low-voltageCMOS or PMOS logic.
The peak output current and hysteresis for eachsource/sink pair is set independently. Output current, threshold voltage, and hysteresis are set by the user’sselection of external resistors. At the specifiedoutput-current trip level, the source driver turns OFF.The internal clamp diode then allows current to flowwithout additional input from the power supply. When the lower current trip point is reached, thesource driver turns back ON.

Internal fixed off-time PWM current-control circuitrycan be used to regulate the maximum load current to adesired value. The peak load current limit is set by theuser’s selection of an input reference voltage and exter-nal sensing resistor. The fixed off-time pulse duration isset by a user-selected external RC timing network.Internal circuit protection includes thermal shutdownwith hysteresis, transient-suppression diodes, andcrossover current protection. Special power-up sequenc-ing is not required.
When a logic low is applied to the BRAKE input, thebraking function is enabled. This overrides ENABLEand PHASE to turn OFF both source drivers and turn ONboth sink drivers. The brake function can be used todynamically brake brush dc motors.

Intended to drive one winding of a bipolar steppermotor in a microstepping mode. Internal pulse-widthmodulated (PWM) current control combined with aninternal nonlinear digital-to-analog converter allows themotor current to be controlled in full-, half-, quarter-,eighth-, or sixteenth-step (microstepping, 3957 only)modes. Nonlinear increments minimize the number ofcontrol lines necessary for microstepping.
Internal circuitry determineswhether the PWM current-controlcircuitry operates in a slow(recirculating) current-decaymode, fast (regenerative) current-decay mode, or in a mixedcurrent-decay mode in which theoff time is divided into a periodof fast current decay with theremainder of the fixed off timespent in slow current decay. Thecombination of user-selectablecurrent-sensing resistor andreference voltage, digitallyselected output current ratio; andslow, fast, or mixed current-decay modes provides users witha broad, variable range of motorcontrol.
Internal circuit protectionincludes thermal shutdown withhysteresis, transient-suppressiondiodes, and crossover currentprotection. Special power-upsequencing is not required.

All devices include two H-bridges capable of continu-ous output currents of ±650 mA and operating voltages to30 V. Motor winding current can be controlled by theinternal fixed-frequency, pulse-width modulated (PWM),current-control circuitry. The peak load current limit is setby the user’s selection of a reference voltage and current-sensing resistors.
The fixed-frequency pulse duration is set by auser-selected external RC timing network. The capacitorin the RC timing network also determines a user-selectableblanking window that prevents false triggering of thePWM current-control circuitry during switching transi-tions.
To reduce on-chip power dissipation, the H-bridgepower outputs have been optimized for low saturationvoltages. The sink drivers feature Allegro’s patentedSatlington™ output structure. The Satlington outputscombine the low voltage drop of a saturated transistor andthe high peak current capability of a Darlington.

Internal Thermal Shutdown Circuitry
Combining low-power CMOS logic with high-current and high-voltage bipolar outputs, theUCN5804B and UCN5804LB BiMOS II translator/drivers provide complete control and drive for a four-phase unipolar stepper-motor.
The CMOS logic section provides the sequencinglogic, DIRECTION and OUTPUT ENABLE control, and a power-ON reset function. Three stepper-motordrive formats, wave-drive (one-phase), two-phase,and half-step are externally selectable. The inputsare compatible with standard CMOS, PMOS, andNMOS circuits. TTL or LSTTL may require the use ofappropriate pull-up resistors to ensure a proper input-logic high.
The wave-drive format consists of energizing onemotor phase at a time in an A-B-C-D (or D-C-B-A)sequence. This excitation mode consumes the leastpower and assures positional accuracy regardless ofany winding inbalance in the motor. Two-phase driveenergizes two adjacent phases in each detent posi-tion (AB-BC-CD-DA). This sequence mode offers animproved torque-speed product, greater detenttorque, and is less susceptible to motor resonance.Half-step excitation alternates between the one-phase and two-phase modes (A-AB-B-BC-C-CD-D-DA), providing an eight-step sequence.

Providing control and drive of the voice coil motorused for head positioning in disk drive applications, thesefull-bridge drivers can be configured so that their outputcurrent is a direct function of an externally applied controlvoltage or current. This linear current control function issupplemented by additional circuitry to protect the loadduring system failure or normal system shutdown.
