Dear Taylors Hill Community,
This term we have had two well-attended extra-curricular activities including
celebrating Book Week and Science Week over the past two weeks.
Family Science Night
At our Science night, we had over 600 people come and participate in a range of
different science activities, which were organised by our wonderful team of
specialist teachers. Our dedicated classroom teachers and student helpers led
each of the activities on the night. Events like this take a lot of planning and
preparation, but all of that is worthwhile when we could see our students (and their parents!) being excited and inquisitive about science. Through our Science
program we are developing students' skills in problem solving, analysis,
synthesizing, information gathering and research, which are all valuable skills for
our students to have. I would also like to thank the many parents who came along
to support their children and provided us with encouraging comments about the
night.
Book Week
This week we are celebrating Book Week at THPS. It was great to see the staff and students get involved in our
dress up day as well as all students entering the THPS Picture Story Book Competition. Writing for a purpose
gives writing a whole new perspective. Imagine if you were asked to write for 20 minutes with no guidelines as
to the topic, who was going to read it, or what you had to do with it when it was finished. This may remind
you of your school days when you had to write an essay for assessment and had it handed back to you with a
mark out of ten based on how neat the handwriting was and how many spelling mistakes you made!
At THPS our main focus in the teaching of writing is on being able to express our ideas and being able to
share them with others. Children are shown a variety of writing styles from narratives (stories and retells),
procedural (recipes or instructions), greetings (cards or letters), lists, invitations, posters and explanations.
After having a particular style of writing modelled for them, they move into individual writing time where they
decide the purpose and audience for their own writing. They experiment with writing materials, with words
and sounds, and with the language. Some pieces of work are published and used in the classroom as reading
material. In many classrooms the shelves are full of student publications. It is important for writers to have a
purpose for their writing, so you may see many student produced signs or lists hanging in the classrooms.
I would like to invite parents and family members to take a walk around the school and see how much
student writing is on display. Come into our Learning Centre and read some of the books the students have
written as well as walk around the school and view the door displays in each classroom celebrating some of
our favourite books.

2017 Parent Opinion Survey This year, a sample of parents have been randomly selected and invited to participate. Results will be used to inform and direct our future school planning and improvement.
Thank you to the parents who have completed the survey.
A reminder to those who have not yet completed the survey. We have extended the time by one week, the Survey portal will be open until the Sunday 3rd September.
The survey is conducted online by ORIMA Research and should take around 15 minutes to complete.
The survey will be open until Sunday 3rd September 2017.
The survey can be completed using any device connected to the internet (even a mobile phone).
Should you require access to a device to complete the survey, please let the school office know.
Thank you for taking the time to participate, your assistance is greatly appreciated.
Congratulations to our Students of the Week
