2.4 SOP Group
Membership: Reeves (chair), Parker, Taylor, Pyle.
Reports to SSC and Data Group
This group will coordinate the deployment of instruments from OWP 4-5 for the SOP period of AMMA.
In regard to the SOP observations, the group will be responsible for liaison with other research groups and funded projects within AMMA International. The SOP group will also be responsible for the coordination of OWP3 enhanced observations (radiosondes, sodars and tethered balloons) with the other SOP observations.
In the case of OWP4 (Aircraft measurements), it will be the responsibility of the SOP group to set the procedures for flight planning. The final decision-making on flight plans will be made by a sub-group, of Parker, Reeves and Taylor.
The SOP group will be responsible for coordination of local facilities for the whole consortium during the SOP period (e.g. local transport, laboratories, communications in Africa, forecasting etc.).The SOP group will make recommendations on Health and Safety issues for the SOP activities.

Flight hours, base, dates
As agreed by the FAAM Operations Committee (Dec 15 2004)
Monday 26th June: 2 weeks 146 on ground at Cranfield for instrument fit
Monday 10th July: 1 week test flying out of Cranfield
Monday 17th July: 6 weeks detachment (until Friday 25th August) SOP2/3
BUT
Flight Hours: NERC = 94 EU = 30 Total = 124Transits = 14 Tests = 10 Detachment = 100
Detachment base: Niamey, Niger(We wish to be in this region of WA although the precise location will depend on logistics and recce.)
SOP2/3 Proposed Flight Patterns
1. Stacked legs from the lowest possible levels in the CBL to the ceiling (35kft).
Immediately ahead of MCS and over the 3-4 days following, during which the soil moisture will equilibriate.Early morning in stratified monsoon layer and later in developed CBL.
In northern quadrilateral of AMMA, centred on Niamey, with high frequency radiosoundings.
Primarily for dynamics objectives although would provide useful data on the composition in different air masses and surface characteristics.
SOP2/3 Proposed Flight Patterns
2. Long straight and level runs mostly in the CBL.
Characterise the emissions from different vegetation types.
North-south legs across contrasting vegetation.East-west legs to characterise specific climatic, vegetation and surface state zones.
Primarily for composition, but also surface characteristics for dynamics.
SOP2/3 Proposed Flight Patterns
3. Stacked legs upwind and downwind of MCS (similar to 1)
Characterise the inflow and outflow of the MCS.
Possibility for coordinated flights – one aircraft in inflow and one in out flow. Also one aircraft flying at higher altitude releasing drop sondes and the other probing layers below.
Composition and dynamics objectives.
SOP2/3 Proposed Flight Patterns Additional Flight Added to AMMA-EU
WP4.2 4. Long straight and level runs N-S across the AEJ at different longitudes.
One N-S leg should be off the coast.
Possibility for coordinated flights – one aircraft upwind and one downwind
Suitcase flights to Dakar.Flight lengths
Primarily for composition objectives.
