Since we are old enoughto sit-up, we are con-stantly debating, dis-
cussing and negotiating overthe want versus need argu-ment. A child in the grocerycart when, checking out, grabs the candy on the shelfthat management chooses toplace there because theyknow all too well the out-come of the dilemma itposes. Kid grabs candy hedoesn’t need, Mom remindsher child of this and attemptsto take it away and put itback on the shelf. Kidscreams and throws atantrum, Mom relents andgives candy back to child, just to shut him up and tocease further embarrassment;store makes another sale of ahigh profit impulse item.
TV advertising address-es the emotion of how the
male customer will feelbehind the wheel of anew hot, sexy, loud,exotic-colored musclecar adorned by scantilyclad beautiful babes inbikinis. Does theintended prospect wantor need that car? Somewould argue, based onthe looks of the maleprospect, he may need a carlike that to get a beautifulbabe, but in reality, we knowthat the purchase of that sexysports car is to fulfill a want, not a need. Does one wantor need that ice cream conewhen passing the ice creamshop on the way home fromwork? No, you just want it!
Over the last 75 years,American businesses andtheir advertising firms havebeen programming people tofollow their wants and
desires, most of the time atthe expense of their needs.Recently, in my life, thiswant vs. need conversationhit close to home. A fewmonths ago I “thought” Iwanted a brand new Bentleyfor my garage. I went to lookat the newest and greatest 4door model in New York tofind a beautiful specimenlonging for a new home anddriver. It was returned to thedealer by the previous ownerafter 750 miles in favor of a
new Ferrari. The ownerlost $70,000 doing this, but, if you can afford aFerrari, so be it. His losswas my gain. I was veryexcited to call my wifeTerry to tell her thegreat news, to which shereplied, “You do not“need” a new Bentley.”I told her no one
“needs” a new Bentley! Thenshe said, “You can’t afford anew Bentley.” I looked care-fully at my checkbook andfired back that I could indeedafford to buy it. Her retortwas something involving col-orful foreign words, sleepingin another room and the doghouse. You know what; Ireally didn’t want a newBentley after all!
Yes, there are wants andneeds and they are usuallygrossly different. There is
however, one exception tothis rule and that is financialindependence. Everyoneshould want to be financiallyindependent, but, they alsoneed to be financially inde-pendent! Financial Indepen-dence means being able tolive your lifestyle without aworking income paycheck.Different for everyone; is thelevel of paycheck necessaryto be financially independ-ent, however, monthly cash-flow is a necessity! Whenthe working phase of your lifeis over because of disability, termination or retirement, the need for a paycheck con-tinues. Some income will beprovided by Social Security ifyou’re over 65 and someretirees will receive a pen-sion. Others must be depend-ent on their savings andinvestments to fill in the
gaps or provide the lion’sshare of their income withthe dual necessity forincreasing that paycheck tocombat inflation. This needfor a paycheck throughoutyour retirement years cannotbe confused with wanting apaycheck, though it would benice if your “wants” could beaccomplished by the needsyou carefully planned for andexecuted!
Let me redirect thequestion! Can your wantsand needs be fulfilled by yourcurrent or future retirementpaycheck? Do you agree withme that your need for a guar-

Though many peopleare quick to refer toMemorial Day as the
unofficial beginning of sum-mer, the day is much morethan that. Initially known asDecoration Day, MemorialDay is a day to rememberthose military members whodied in service of the country.
The origins of MemorialDay remain a topic of debate. In 1966, President LyndonJohnson declared Waterloo,N.Y. as the official birthplaceof Memorial Day. However, the roots of Memorial Daylikely run much deeper, asresearchers at Duke Universitynote that during the CivilWar, organized women’sgroups in the south had begunto decorate the graves of fallensoldiers.
Memorial Day as weknow it today can likely betraced to Charleston, S.C.,where teachers, missionariesand some members of the pressgathered on May 1, 1865 tohonor fallen soldiers. During
the Civil War, captured Unionsoldiers were held at theCharleston Race Course andhundreds died during captivi-ty. Upon their deaths, soldierswere buried in unmarkedgraves. When the Civil Warended, the May Day gatheringwas organized as a memorial toall the men who had died dur-ing captivity. The burialground was landscaped, andthose freed as a result of theCivil War played an integralrole in the event at theCharleston Race Course.
While the event in
Charleston might have beenthe first Memorial Day-typecelebration in the southernUnited States, General JohnA. Logan is often cited asinspiring similar events in thenorth. As commander-in-chiefof the Grand Army of theRepublic, a veterans’ organiza-tion for men who served in theCivil War, General Loganissued a proclamation just fivedays after the Charlestonevent that called forDecoration Day to be observedannually across the country.Logan preferred the event not
be held on the anniversary ofany particular battle, and thusthe day was observed for thefirst time on May 30.Celebrating the day in Mayalso was significant to eventorganizers because May is amonth when flowers are inbloom, making it easier forobservers of the holiday toplace flowers on the graves offallen soldiers.
In 1868, events were heldat more than 180 cemeteriesin 27 states, and those figuresnearly doubled in 1869. By1890, every northern stateofficially recognized Deco-ration Day as a state holiday. But southern states honoredtheir dead on a different dayuntil after World War I, whenthe holiday was changed torecognize Americans who diedin any war and not just theCivil War. Nearly every statenow celebrates Memorial Day,a name for the holiday firstused in 1882, on the lastMonday in May.
The history of Memorial Day
Anew study shows thatblackberries couldlead to healthy gums.
The study states that the anti-bacterial properties of blackber-ries lower the risk of gum dis-ease and promote gum health.
There are also prior stud-ies that have indicated the pos-itive aspects of blackberries,
claiming they prevent cancer-ous cells from spreading.
Many studies have shownthat eating a diet filled withfruits and vegetables is benefi-cial to one’s health. This type of
diet also lowers the risk of oralcancer, diabetes, heart diseaseand other ailments.
Since good oral healthleads to good overall health, itcan be extremely beneficial forpeople to incorporate blackber-ries into their diets.

There are so many differ-ent and creative waysfor families to show-
case their heritage and honor agrandparent or other specialsenior. Scrapbooks are one suchway to share the life of a specialperson and indirectly tell thetale of your family history.
Very often personal histo-ry projects are a part of elemen-tary school curricula, so youmay already have the makingsof a family tree or a family diaryin your home. All it takes is alittle more research and someplanning to design a scrapbookthat can be gifted or kept forgenerations to enjoy.
Begin by making an out-line of what you would like tocover in the scrapbook.Perhaps there is a specific eventin a grandparent’s life that isworth highlighting, like a mili-tary tour of duty or a brief stintin show business. Maybe you
would like to present differentsnapshots in time during his orher life. Either way, planningout the content of the scrap-book will make it easier togather the necessary elements.
Once you’ve settled on atheme, begin your research byinterviewing the eventualrecipient (he or she doesn’thave to know the reasonbehind the inquiry.)
During the interview, takenote of key dates and try toestablish the mood of the erawith supporting materials. Forexample, you may be able tofind samples of advertisementsfrom a correlating period in his-tory or newspaper clippingsthat can be used to fluff up thecontent of the book.
In the meantime, gatherphotos that can be used inthe scrapbook, which maytake some hunting. Printscan be scanned and copied
via a desktop scanner athome, or loaded onto a CDor thumb drive and broughtto a pharmacy photo kiosk. Some specialty shops caneven scan slides or convertstills from film into images.Make sure to make copies ofall original prints and becareful not to lose or damagethe originals.
Scrapbooks can be mademanually with materials pur-
chased anywhere from craftand hobby stores to stationeryshops. There are a variety ofpaper-cutting tools, adhesives, stickers, labels, and stencilsthat can be used to enhancethe look of the scrapbook. There are also computer soft-ware programs or online toolsthrough photo-sharing sitesthat enable you to uploadimages and text and designphoto books entirely online.
Then the finished product canbe printed out in a variety offinishes. This method mayactually be preferable for thosewho plan to save the scrapbookor anticipate it being such a bighit that others will want theirown copies.
Create a digital file of allof your information andcopies of images. This way ifyou ever want to add to thescrapbook or reproduce infor-
mation in the future you willhave all of the information atyour fingertips. The scrapbookalso will serve as a good sourcematerial down the line shouldfuture generations want tolearn about their ancestors.
Scrapbooking is morethan just detailing baby’s firstbirthday or a vacation. Thispopular pastime can help docu-ment the life of a special senior.

Playground equipment isa magnet for children, and rightfully so. Kids
love playing on swings, slidesand climbing components ofplay-sets on school propertiesand at area parks. While play-grounds are ideal settings forfun-filled days, they also carrya certain degree of risk.
Approximately 20 chil-
dren in the United Statesdie from playground-relatedinjures every year. More thanhalf of these deaths resultfrom strangulation and aboutone-third result from falls, according to the Centers forDisease Control andPrevention. But parents canreduce their youngsters’ risk ofinjury and the severity of
injuries in various ways.•Purchase recommended safeequipment. Parents should dotheir research when buyingplayground equipment. Con-sumers can check with theConsumer Product SafetyCommission for any litigationinvolving certain manufactur-ers or any product recalls. Itmay cost a little more toinstall a top-of-the-line play-ground set, but the peace ofmind and reduced risk of
injury is worth the extra cost.•Invest in adequate surfacing. The CPSC says roughly 60percent of all playgroundinjuries result from falls fromthe structures. Although nofall is pleasant, the severity ofinjury resulting from a fall canbe greatly reduced dependingon how safe the surface mate-rial surrounding the equip-ment is. Blacktop, concrete oreven grass can be painful toland on. However, loose-fill
materials like pea gravel, sand, shredded rubber, or mulch cansoften falls. Plus, these materi-als are relatively low-cost andcan be made from recycleditems. But parents shouldknow that loose-fill materialsmust be maintained to ensurea safe level of thickness. Adepth of 12 inches is often
recommended.•Choose an age-appropriatestructure. Injuries frequentlyoccur when children useequipment designed for olderkids. Playgrounds are not one-size-fits-all. There are specificdifferences in the size andstature of younger children

Segregatedplayground areas, or thosewith groupings of equipmentrecommended for certain agegroups, can help limit injuries.Pre-school children needsmaller steps and crawl spaces, while older children can uti-lize overhead bars that maxi-mize upper-arm strength.•Safely situate equipment.Consider placing a piece ofplayground equipment undera shady area to keep childrencomfortable and safe fromsunburns. Hot equipment canresult in burns and being outin direct sunlight can alsocause UV damage to the chil-dren’s skin. Structures shouldbe situated so there are noobstructions or obstacles toany moving parts.•Select a shorter structure.Studies show that the greaterthe height of a playgroundstructure the greater the riskfor injury. Choose playgroundequipment that is nearer tothe ground to prevent seriousinjuries from falls and otherincidents.•Inspect and maintain theequipment. Safety measuresmust still be taken after theplayground has been erected.Equipment should be routine-ly inspected for damage andmovable parts and jointsshould be examined for anysigns of wear and tear. Bolts
should remain tight, and anyhardware that is protrudingshould be fixed. S-rings andother links and chains shouldnot have gaps where childrencan get caught. Wood shouldbe inspected for splintering ordecay and replaced wherenecessary.•Supervise kids at all times.Children should always besupervised when playing
on playground equipment, whether they are playing atschool, at home or in a publicpark. Adults should discour-age poor or risk-taking behav-ior that increases risk of
injury. Adults also are urged tokeep abreast of changingstructure codes and guidelinesso that equipment can beadjusted accordingly.

How to prevent playground injuries continued from previous page
Humans are not theonly animals thatmay get a bit pudgy
around the middle and tip thescale in the wrong direction.Man’s best friend also may puton some extra pounds, neces-sitating a workout plan to getback into shape.
According to theAssociation for Pet ObesityPrevention, 53 percent ofadult dogs in the UnitedStates are classified as over-weight or obese by their vet-erinarians. Yet, pet owners aresometimes unaware that theirprized pooches are over-weight.
Overweight dogs andcats face some of the samehealth risks as overweightmen and women.Musculoskeletal problems, such as degenerative joint dis-
eases, and back problems havebeen linked to obesity, as haveheart disease and respiratoryproblems. Diabetes and heator exercise intolerance areother side effects of beingoverweight.
But a pet’s weight is notthe lone indicator of howhealthy the animal is, and theideal weight can vary fromdog to dog. A body conditionscore is helpful in determininga pet’s ideal body weight. Some indications a dog maynot be at a healthy weightinclude:- a belly that hangs below the ribcage area- a belly that moves when the dogmoves, unless the dog is preg-nant or has just given birth- inability of the owner or vet tofeel the dog’s ribs in the rib cage- a waddle of skin on the neck of
dogs where excess skin isn’tindicative of the breed- no visual indication of dog’swaist-inability of the owner or vet tofeel the bones near the base of thetail- a less active lifestyle, includingavoiding exercise and play- excessive panting
Keeping a dog in shape isone of the best things you cando for your pet. But what ifyour dog already has packed
on a few unnecessary pounds? It’s time to start a canine fit-ness routine and follow someother guidelines.•Talk to your veterinarian.Obesity could be the result ofeating too much or inactivity, but it also can be a sign of aserious condition. If a routineexam and blood work come upnormal, then you can begin aplan for helping Fido shed theweight.•Consider a new food. There
are many different types offoods on the market, includ-ing low-calorie options. Somefoods contain extra fiber tohelp the dog feel fuller with-out having eaten as much. Also, look for foods with leanprotein sources without grainsand other filler.•Break up the feeding sched-ule. Instead of one large meala day, feed your dog two orthree smaller portions of food, which will help keep hismetabolism going all day long.•Become joint joggers.Jogging with a dog canbecome an enjoyable pastimethat enables you both to getexercise and stay in shape.•Take up swimming. Manydogs are natural lovers ofwater, and swimming is aneffective, low-impact exercise.•Teach your dog tricks.
Physical tricks, like fetching aball or rolling over, can keepdogs active.•Go for long walks. Take yourdog with you wherever you go.The more he or she is up andmoving, the less chance thereis to sleep and be lazy.

Where Does Your Business Fit Into theBIG PICTURE?
Men and women serv-ing in the militarymake considerable
sacrifices in defense of theUnited States and its citizens.Such sacrifices can easily betaken for granted by thosewith no friends or familymembers serving in the mili-tary, but it’s important for allAmericans to recognize theefforts of both active and vet-eran servicemen and women.
Honoring active militarymembers and veterans doesnot have to be an elaborateundertaking. Service membersand their families often cher-ish even the simplest of ges-tures, and the following are ahandful of ways grateful menand women can show theirappreciation to active andretired members of the mili-tary.•Help a neighbor who’s onactive duty. Active duty serv-ice members can be away fromtheir families for long periodsof time, and their absence canmake things difficult for theirfamilies. Spouses of deployedservice members are typicallyleft to manage a household ontheir own for months at atime. Neighbors can showtheir appreciation by helpingwith some chores around the
house. Offer to mow a neigh-bor’s lawn or drive a neigh-bor’s kids to school. Such ges-tures might seem small, butthey can go a long way towardalleviating some of the stressthat spouses of deployed serv-ice members deal with on adaily basis.•Support the WoundedWarrior Project. Many servicemembers sustain physicalinjuries while deployed. TheWounded Warrior Projectworks to raise awareness andenlist the public’s help toaddress the needs of injuredservice members. Men andwomen who want to showtheir appreciation to injuredservice members can workwith the Wounded WarriorProject by volunteering atproject-sponsored events orhosting fundraising eventssuch as golf tournaments orcommunity picnics. Moreinformation about workingwith the Wounded WarriorProject is available atwww.woundedwarriorpro-ject.org.•Write a letter of appreciation. One of the simplest ways toshow your support for servicemembers is to write them a let-ter expressing that apprecia-tion. If a friends, relatives or
neighbors are active servicemembers or veterans, sit downand write a letter telling themhow much you appreciate theirsacrifice in service of theircountry, and encourage young-sters to do the same. If youdon’t know any members of themilitary, you can work with AMillion Thanks (www.amil-lionthanks.org), a year-roundcampaign that encouragesAmericans to write letters oremails or send cards or prayersto U.S. military personnel, pastand present to thank them fortheir sacrifices, dedication andservice.•Exercise your right to vote. One of the best ways tohonor servicemen andwomen is to avoid taking therights they so bravely defendfor granted. Members of themilitary routinely put theirlives on the line soAmericans can enjoy free-doms that many peopleacross the globe cannot.Voting is one such freedom,so Americans should make ita point to vote everyElection Day and teach theirkids about the responsibilityeach American has to voteand take an interest in theirgovernment. Speak withactive and veteran members
of the military about theirthoughts on proposed legisla-tion and their opinions onhow to improve that legisla-
tion, taking those opinionsinto consideration beforecasting your vote.

Apatch of dead grasson an otherwiselush lawn can be a
frustrating eyesore for home-owners. Whether lawn careis your passion or just some-
thing you do to maintain thevalue of your home, deadgrass can be exasperating.
But as unsightly as deadgrass can be, addressing itand restoring the dead patch-
es can be somewhat simple. Before you can restore grass, however, you must first iden-tify the source of the prob-lem. Grass often dies becauseof urine damage, which is
typically characterized by adead spot surrounded by oth-erwise green grass. Grubinfestation might be at faultwhen dead grass appears, and

such an infestation oftenproduces patches of lightbrown grass that are scat-
tered throughout the lawn. It’s also possible that dead
grass is a result of humanerror. If your lawn was overfertilized, then patches ofgray-green grass may appear.Fungal disease is anothercommon culprit behind deadgrass, and such disease canmanifest itself in different

prefer to hire a professional. If you want to handle theproblem on your own, applypesticide to the affected areasso the insects behind theproblem are killed. Once theinsects are no more, cut thegrass, raking the affected areato remove the dead grass andany additional debris. Scattergrass seed over the affectedareas and then apply anappropriate fertilizer andwater immediately. Profess-ionals may know just the
right fertilizer for your lawn,so even if you want to go italone, visit a local lawn carecenter to ask for advice aboutaddressing your particularproblem.Fertilizer damage
Fertilizer damage canalso prove difficult toaddress, as applying freshseeds too soon can kill anyfreshly growing seedlings. Sograss that has been damagedby over-fertilization mustfirst be allowed to fully die.Once that has happened, the
grass can be cut and anyremaining debris or deadgrass can be removed. Seedcan then be scattered, andyou can even add some addi-tional soil before laying downan appropriate amount of fer-tilizer and watering the lawnimmediately. If you don’ttrust yourself to use fertilizercorrectly, then hire a profes-sional to do the job for you. This will cost a little more, but you likely won’t wake upto more dead patches of grassdown the road.
Dead grass can beunsightly and turn an other-wise lush lawn into a patchyeyesore. But addressing deadgrass can be easy and canquickly restore a lawn to itsgreen grandeur.

Perhaps no dessert dish isas beloved as the bananasplit. And as any good
banana split aficionado knows, diners often make a greatbanana split with fudge sauce.
For those who want tobring their favorite dessert outof the diner and into their ownkitchens, it’s not as hard as itsounds, and you won’t have toworry about ice cream meltingin the car. Dessert lovers whoenjoy making their ownbanana splits should considerthe following recipe for“Banana Splits with Hot FudgeSauce” from Jennifer Joyce’s“Diner” (Ryland, Peters &Small), a comforting collectionof recipes from the roadsidediner.Banana Splits With Hot FudgeSauceServes 44 small bananas
4 scoops each of strawberry, vanilla and chocolate ice cream4 maraschino cherries½ cup chopped, toasted pecansHot fudge sauce3 ounces semisweet chocolate, chopped¾ cup heavy cream2 tablespoons butter¼ cup light corn syrup1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract½ cup sugarWhipped cream1 cup heavy cream1 tablespoon superfine sugar1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
To make the hot fudgesauce, put the chocolate, creamand butter in a mediumsaucepan. When melted, addlight corn syrup, vanilla extractand sugar, stirring constantlyover medium heat. When near-ly boiling, turn the heat downto low and simmer for 15 min-utes without stirring. Let cool
for 5 minutes before using. To make the whipped
cream, beat the heavy creamwith the sugar and vanilla, andset aside. Peel the bananas andcut in half lengthwise. Take thedessert dishes and along thesides of each one, put 2 bananahalves. Put one scoop of eachflavor of ice cream between thebananas. Top with one spoon-ful of the whipped cream, asprinkling of pecans and a cher-ry on top. Serve with a smallpitcher of the hot fudge sauceto pour over.
