This is my fifth book dedicated tobeach houses. What is it aboutbeach houses in Australia andNew Zealand that makes them sofascinating? Fundamentally, it muststem from an eagerness to escape
from the city (Australia is one of themost urbanised countries in theworld, with over 70 percent of thepopulation living in cities). Thisescape found momentum in the1950s, with the building of humblefibro shac ks dotted along the coast.
These simple fibro shacks may nothave had two separate living areasand ensuites, but there was a strongconnection to the coastal elements,
from the dunes to the crashing wavesof the sea. Over the decades, the beachhouse became more sophisticated. Withthe price of land near the water increasingsubstantially, it was inevitable that morepermanent homes would be built.

I N T R O D U C T I O N 7
However, while these latest beachhouses are more substantial bothin size and finish than those ofprevious decades, theres still astrong connection to the coastalsurrounds. Large picture windowshave been designed to capture thesea views, as well as gnarled tea-trees. And materials such as timberhave been selected to weather in
the often harsh sunlight. Otherhomes featured in this book aremade from concrete, designed tocombat theoften severewinds fromthe open sea.
A house from the 1970s is reworkedas well as showing a contemporaryside. Other homes have replacedthe original dwelling that existedon the site. And while theres nocomparison to these homes, bothin style or finish, there are subtleclues in the present design as toa former life, and the memoriesthis entails.
While many beach houses in this bookare entirely new, built from the ground up,
some are homes from previous periodsthat have been thoughtfully extended.

Although each beach house in this book is unique,a similar arrangement of spaces and features can beidentified. Bedrooms are often located at ground level, with the upper level given over to the living areas. There is typically more natural light at the higher level, and often unimpeded views of the beach and the bluehorizon. The other commonality is the larger kitchen, with generous island benches a llowing the entirefamily to be part of meal preparation. Pantries maybe smaller, and there may be fewer kitchen appliances,
but meals are generally more casual. Lets be realistic, the idea of heading to the beach is equated with simplyprepared meals, with the emphasis on fresh ingredients.
Restrictions abound in the citythere are neighbours in closeproximity and some streets areheritage-listed; not to mentionall the setback requirementsfrom local councils, ensuring
overshadowing isnt an issue. While architects enjoy the freedomto design more liberally, there arestill constraints which need to beaddressed. And in certain enclavesalong the coastline, theserestrictions can be as challenging
to manoeuvre as designing in aheritage-listed street in the city.
Building a beach house notonly provides a valuableescape from the city,
it also offers an opportunityfor both owners andarchitects to experimentwith more adventurousideas.

I N T R O D U C T I O N 9
Beach houses are often equatedwith fragile timber homes elevatedprecariously on poles. However, many of the beach houses in thisbook are strongly anchored to theearth. One house, by Woods Bagotat Wonga Beach, is constructed ofconcrete block. But rather than
feeling cavernous, this exceptionalhome is strongly connected to thesurrounding courtyard gardens. But even when a beach house isconstructed of timber, as is thecase with Hulena Architects houseat Matarangi Beach, the timber was
stained black to create a moodierpresence.
People will continue to be drawn tothe beach, whether they are parentsholidaying with children or empty nestersdividing their time between city and coast.Spending time in both environments notonly accentuates the experience in each
abode but, more importantly, highlights thediversity between the two environments.

Built on a site once occupied by atiny unsalvageable fibro shed, thisrather less modest replacementhouse nevertheless retains thecasual sensibilities of the shack, located a short walk from KilcareBeach at HARDYS BAY , on thecentral coast of New South Wales.
As the site falls away fromthe street, the two-levelhouse appears single storeyfrom the front.Living areas, master bedroom andensuite are arranged on the firstfloor, with childrens bedroomson the level below. Given the slopeof the land, all rooms, includingbedrooms, enjoy views of the waterand established bushland.

The choice of simple constructionmaterials was in part determinedby the house being located withina bushfire zone. Externally, thehouse features spotted gum andfibro cement sheets, with a roof
constructed of Zincalume steelsheeting. Inside, polished timberfloorboards are featuredthroughout, while the kitchenis made of laminate. A plywoodceiling over the dining area (whichforms part of the open pl an livingareas) creates a point of difference.

To further increase the natural light in theliving areas, a portion of the ceiling overthe terrace has been cut out.
A sense of tranquility pervadesthe interior, with materials usedsparingly. Off-form concrete isfeatured prominently, and the
stained timber walls are expressedin the interior. The design representsa new take on the beach houseconcept, as theres a sense offamiliarity in the materialsselected, though it certainly doesntreference the fibro shack that once

double-height void over the livingarea, seems considerably largerthan its 260 square metres. Thelarge terrace, adjacent to the livingarea, is treated as an additionalroom. Sliding glass doors frame thelounge, while mesh screens close

Staggered across its elongated site andextending over several levels, the houseis constructed of concrete, steel andglass, tinted to reduce the amount ofdirect sunlight entering the home.
Water is a prominent theme of thedesign. Along with breathtakingviews of the Pacific Ocean, the housefeatures a swimming pool and ashallow pond with stepping stonesleading to the front entrance. Andthe slightly curved roof forms give
the house a nautical feel.

Two kilometres outside NOOSA ,Queensland, this house was one ofthe first to be built on a developingestate. Though there were noneighbouring properties when built,PHORM ARCHITECTURE+ DESIGN were conscious of
ensuring future privacy as thedevelopment began to expand.Fortunately, a nature reserveadjacent to the street providesunimpeded views of Mt. Tinbeerwahon the northwest side of the 800-square-metre property.

One of the most noticeable aspectsof the design is the link to theoutdoors. As well as extensive glasslouvred windows, large slidingdoors open onto the central deck.

Strict development guidelinesrestricted architects ARM to asingle-storey layout. OverlookingPicnic Bay, the house is accessedby a narrow road. Elevated abovethe rocky outcrops, the housefollows the fall of the land.

While the homes distinctive formincludes a classic modernist
pavilion, its considerably skewed, with two rock-like forms attached. The pavilion is constructed of steeland clad in timbe r boards, and thetwo rocks, each containing abedroom and ensuite, are madefrom cement sheeting, treated to
mimic granite on the site.
Rather than just a corridor separating thepavilion from the two pods, the architectscreated an open breezeway on either side.
