1. GENERAL
1.1 INTRODUCTION
This booklet has been prepared to enable the master to demonstrate the ability of the ship at
all stages of any voyage carrying bulk grain to comply with the stability criteria required by
International grain code (IMO Res. MSC. 23 (59)).
1.2 REGULATION TO BE OBSERVED
(1) All necessary and reasonable trimming shall be performed to level all free grain surface
and to minimized the effect of grain shifting.
In any filled compartment, the bulk grain shall be trimmed so as to fill all the spaces
under decks and hatch covers to the maximum extent possible. After loading, the
Master shall ensure that the ship be upright before proceeding to sea.
The surface of the bulk grain in any partly filled compartment shall be level and topped
off with bagged grain tightly stowed and extending to a height of not less than one-
sixteen of maximum breadth of the free grain surface or 1.20 meters, whichever is the

(2) The intact stability characteristics of any ship carrying bulk grain shall be shown to meet,
throughout the voyage, at least the following criteria after tanking account of the heeling
moments due to grain shift:
(i) The angle of heel due to the shift of grain shall be not greater than 12 degrees or
the angle at which the deck edge is immersed, whichever is the lesser;
(ii) In the statical stability diagram, the net or residual area between the heeling arm
curve and the righting arm curve up to the angle heel of maximum difference
between the ordinates of two curves, or 40 degrees or the angle of flooding (f),
whichever is the least, shall in all conditions of loading be not less than 0.075 meter-radians; and
(iii) The initial metacentric height, after correction for the free surface effects of liquid in
tanks, shall be not less than 0.30 meter.
(iv) After loading, the master shall ensure that the ship shall be upright before
proceeding to the sea.
1.3 DATA AND UNIT SYSTEM TO BE USED
(1) Vessels cargo capacity, tank capacities, etc., together with vertical and longitudinal center
of gravity should be taken from 7.1 CAPACITY PLAN and 7.3 CURVES AND TABLES OF

1.5 CORRECTION OF GM FOR FREE SURFACE EFFECTS OF LIQUID
In the following case, GM will decrease owing the effects of liquid free surface in tanks.
(1) In case where fuel oil diesel oil loaded, it is ordinary that each tanks will not be filled
completely in consideration of heat expansion.
It may be considered, therefore, that each tanks have free surface. (Using maximum
moment of inertia (MAX. IT)
(2) In case where fresh water tanks or ballast water tanks are made half tank, it may beconsidered that there tanks have free surface. (Using MAX. IT)
But if there tanks are fully loaded, there is no need to tank account. (Ballast water tanks
only)
The decrease quantity of GM in the above case is derived form the following formula.

2.2 STEP-A: TRIM AND STABILITY CALCULATION
Ships condition such as displacement, trim and metacentric height, etc. at departure and
arrival can be obtained by the following method using 5.2.1 DEADWEIGHT MOMENT
CALCULATION SHEET and 5.2.2 TRIM AND STABILITY CALCULATION SHEET.
(1) Displacement, G, KG and GGo
(a) Write the weight in column WEIGHT for each compartment loaded on the vessel.
(b) Multiply WEIGHT by G and write the products in column LONGITUDINAL
MOMENT.
G is the horizontal distance between center of gravity of each item and midshIp.
The positive sign means that the item is located abaft the midship.
(c) Multiply WEIGHT by KG and write the products in column VERTICAL MOMENT.
KG is the height of center of gravity of each item above base line.
(d) Write the free surface moment in column FREE SURFACE MOMENT due to tank
which are half loaded.
(e) Sum up WEIGHT, LONGITUDINAL MOMENT, VERTICAL MOMENT and FREE
SURFACE MOMENT.
(g) The sum of WEIGHT means the displacement.

(2) Draft, B, F, MTC, TKM and LKM
(a) Find out the draft corresponding to the displacement using 7.4.3 HYDROSTATIC
TABLE.
At the same time B, F, MTC and TKM are also obtained from the aforementioneditem.
B is the horizontal distance between center of buoyancy and midship, these are
positive in sign when the centers are located abaft midship.
TKM is height of transverse metacenter above base line.
MTC is the moment to change trim 1 cm and approximately calculated as
MTC

(3) Trim and Draft

2.3 STEP-B: HEELING MOMENT CALCULATION
Transverse heeling moment can be obtained by the following method using 5.2.3 GRAIN
LOADING CALCULATION SHEET.
(1) Take out Weight (t) of grain cargo in each hold from 5.2.1 DEADWEIGHT MOMENT
CALCULATION SHEET.
(2) Change Weight (t) into Volume (m3) from the following formula.

Stowage factor : volume per unit weight of grain cargo
(3) Find out the Volumetric Transverse Heeling Moment (m4) corresponding to Volume (m3)
from 3. CURVES AND TABLES OF GRAIN HEELING MOMENT, and then write the value
into the column TRANSVERSE HEELING MOMENT (m4).
(4) Multiply TRANSVERSE HEELING MOMENT by CORRECTION FACTOR (k), and then
write the value into the column TOTAL HEELING MOMENT (m4).
Correction factor k is
k = 1.00 ... filled compartment, in case where KG-value for volumetric center of
whole cargo space is taken.
(5) Change Volumetr ic Transverse Heeling Moment (m4) into Heeling Moment (t-m) from the
