Hello Families and Friends, Welcome back everyone to 2021! We are looking forward to another great year at Felixstow! This year we have our External School Review in Week 7 term 1 (please read further information later in the newsletter). Our previous School Review was in 2017 so this is a great opportunity for us to reflect on our journey as a school over the last 3-4 years. I look back with pride in the way that our community has worked through all the challenges of change to make sure our school an amazing place for our children to be. We have an amazing, highly professional and dedicated team of educators, passionate and considerate families and engaged students, who all genuinely care about each other and the learning community we create for each other. Learning We started this year, as we do each year with a four week focus on our values, community, expectations, building relationships and ensuring students and staff are ready for learning. In week 3 we begin to reintroduce our more formal learning structures such as literacy and numeracy along with home groups and creative arts. In week 4 we hope to have identified any students or groups that require intervention and programs such as MiniLit, Too Smart and speech support start up again. In week 5 we will launch into our first inquiry for the year. We have not yet finalised the Inquiry central idea, but we are planning for a Science focus in the area of Earth and Space Sciences. We always know that students get very excited when we start learning about ‘space’ so we are looking forward to getting started with them.
COVID and Planning With the continuing recommendations and ever-changing guidelines around the management of Covid-19 we continue to be advised regarding access to onsite spaces. Unfortunately our space is limited in the building and this minimizes the number of adults we are able to have in the building at any one time. This requires a lot of additional thinking and planning to ensure we meet the guidelines and are helping to keep everyone safe. Each event or plan as we move forward will be carefully considered to ensure maximum connection with families. While it still might not be quite what we would like, we do appreciate everyone’s cooperation and consideration. Please keep an eye on any information sent home about how each upcoming event will be managed. RSVPS, QR check ins and sign ins will now be a necessity for any school event. We are currently looking at ways to accommodate our volunteer programs and will be sending information home to our approved volunteers over the next few weeks about ways that we can work together with them. It has been a wonderful, smooth start to the year and we are excited about the year of learning ahead of us. Please check the last page for important diary dates! Cheers Skye

External School Review (ESR) As part of our continuous school improvement process, we will be involved in an external school review with a Department for Education review panel.
The purpose of external school reviews is to support us to raise achievement, sustain high performance and pro-vide quality assurance to build public confidence in government schools.
All government schools are externally reviewed every 3 years.
The focus of the external school review is to evaluate our school’s performance. The review panel includes a re-view officer and a trained review principal.
Our school review will occur on Tuesday March 9th and Wednesday March 10th.
The review panel will identify aspects of our school’s improvement that have been verified through the review processes, as well as the improvements that we need to make in the future.
During the external school review, some students, parents, governing council members and staff will be asked to provide information to the review panel in a number of ways. These include:
• individual interviews with staff
• group discussions (with students or staff or parents)
• meetings (governing council, staff meeting)
• visits into classrooms.
We appreciate everyone’s support and time in helping us with this external school review process.
Please let us know via email if you do not want your child to participate in these discussions.

Events
Meet and Greet
Felixstow staff and families enjoyed our meet and greet session on Tuesday. Students
were able to show their families around their learning spaces and families had the op-
portunity to meet our team and people in our community. We had our new jackets on
display and a book sale for some of our old books. Thankyou to all the families who at-
tended.
Premier’s Be Active Challenge 2021
This year, our school is again taking part in the Premier’s be active challenge. The
challenge for students is to do at least 60 minutes of physical activity on at least 5 days
of the week for at least 4 weeks. Students have been provided with a recording booklet
to take home and record their progress. The booklet provides many examples of
activities for the students to be physically active at home. Once completed, please
hand out the booklet to Felixstow reception. Kamal will hand out more booklets as the
year goes on. We are hoping for maximum participation this year.

Don’t forget Chess club is back on

The Resource Hub Welcome
The Resource Hub staff, Kelly and Marissa, would like to extend a warm welcome to our
returning and new students and their families. We hope you all had a restful and happy
summer holiday. It has been wonderful to see the students back at school, ready to
learn and full of energy.
Over the holiday period the RH has undergone a change of layout in preparation for
what we intend to be an eventful and exciting year. We have quite a few new activities
and events planned. Some are outlined in this newsletter and more will be revealed over
the coming weeks. So please watch this space!
Borrowing
Please ensure your child returns their book(s) by the due date as they will not be able to
borrow anymore books if they have overdue books. Returning books on time also en-
sures other children who may be waiting to read the borrowed book are able to do so.

Primary Learning
Primary 2020
Students in the primary class have had a marvellous start to Term 1. We have familiar-
ised ourselves with some changes to the classroom environment and have begun get-
ting to know each other and ourselves as learners. It has been fantastic to have some
new students join us and we would like to say a big Niina Marni our new students Eva,
Luka and Indi and their families.
Students created some super artwork for our meet and greet on Tuesday 9th February
which will gives an insight into their interests and their characteristics. Highlights for our
first weeks together include maths games, investigations, and values exploration.
Please follow your child's Seesaw account for news from the primary room.

Juniors Learning Juniors 2020
Hello from the Juniors!
In the Juniors we have been busy getting to know the new Receptions and settling into
school routines. All children have a Junior buddy to support them at school and when
we go on excursions. We have been doing some buddy reading and learning about our
school values together.
In Tuula’s group we have been enjoying our learning through play sessions in Investiga-
tion, learning about all the resources in our room and meeting staff and students across
the school. The new Receptions are James, Louie, Nicolas, Adelaide, Tori, Archie, Hugo,
Charlotte, Maggie, Harvey, Anastasia, Austin, Leah, Elizabeth, Manav, Evie, Dakoda and
Ethan.
In Nicole’s group we have been discussing our school values and representing them
through role plays. We have drawn ourselves as super heroes and written about our
super powers and how we got them. As a group we have come up with a list of jobs we
need to do in our class and the year two students are learning how to upload their work
onto See saw.
We are looking forward to a great year of learning together!
Tuula and Nicole

How we learn at Felixstow Community School Over the past 2-3 years we have been developing our practice in how we teach and
learn at Felixstow. We are very proud of the way that we work together to learn and
the success in our students results, thinking and the way they can talk about them-
selves as learners and the way they learn.
Below is a visual representation we have been developing over the last few months
that captures this. Both staff and Governing Council have now approved this as a
publishable school document that supports everyone to better understand what
learning looks like at Felixstow.
Our recent learning as staff around the ‘New Pedagogies for Deep Learning’ has reso-
nated strongly with what we believe about education and how ‘school’ should look
for students. Our goal in everything we do is to focus on developing the 6 Global
Competencies of Communication, Critical Thinking, Collaboration, Creativity, Charac-
ter and Citizenship.
Students will be learning more deeply what these competencies are and how we de-
velop these skills through our learning and daily interactions.
We are excited to share this visual with you and to further develop our understand-
ing as a community about developing deep learning opportunities and outcomes for
our students.
