50 words: From hello to kangaroo, new map of Indigenous languages of AustraliaJackBuckskinhad‘noidea’whathewasgettingintowhenhesignedup14yearsagotolearnhispeople’s‘sleeping’language.SpokenforthousandsofyearsbytheAboriginalpeopleofAdelaideandtheAdelaidePlains,nobodyhaduseditineverydaylifefornearly150years.Now50wordsofKaurnahavebeenincludedandvoiced1byMrBuckskinonanewIndigenouslanguagemappingprojectcalled50words.online.…Launchedaweekago,the50wordsmapaimstoshowcasethediversityofIndigenouslanguages,startingwith50words(orfewer,ifmorewordsaren’tavailable).Thereare15languages,includingKaurna,andthehopeistoincludeeveryIndigenouslanguage.…BeforeBritishsettlement,thereweremorethan250Indigenouslanguages,theAustralianInstituteofAboriginalandTorresStraitIslanderStudies(AIATSIS)estimates.Approximately120[languages]arestillspokenacrossAustralia,butonly18arebeinglearnedasafirstlanguageeveryday.Manylanguagesaredowntotheirlastfewspeakers.LedbylinguistsProfessorRachelNordlingerandAssociateProfessorNickThiebergerfromMelbourneUniversity’sResearchUnitforIndigenousLanguage,theinteractivewebsiteisdesignedtoshowcasethediversityandnumberofIndigenouslanguages.…Mostpeopledidn’tknowtherewasmorethanoneIndigenouslanguage,saidProfessorThieberger.Otherpeoplethoughttherewereonlyafewwordsineachlanguage,wheneachhadthousands.Surprisingly,thesoundsystemsusedinAustralianIndigenouslanguageswereverysimilar,saidProfessorThieberger.Sometimeswordswereverydifferentinlanguagesspokeninthesameregion.Oftentherearesimilaritiesinwordsspokenbypeoplethousandsofkilometresapart.IntheBilinarralanguageoftheNorthernTerritory,thewordforrainisyibu,whichisverysimilartoyipu,thewordforraininGurindji,alanguagewhichisspokennottoofaraway.… InKaurna,manyaisusedforrainandcoldweather,saidMrBuckskin.That’sbecauseitrainswhenitiscoldinwinterinAdelaidesothetwogohandinhand,hesaid.‘Whenpeopletalkaboutaconnectiontocountry,languagegivesyouthat,’hesaid.‘Itgivesyouanunderstandingofwhattheenvironmentandtheculturewaslike,’hesaid.

Play and stay: Ridgetoun’s new playground opensTheRidgetouncommunityhasrecentlyconstructedanewchildren’splaygroundafterreceiving$100000offundingfromtheVictorianstategovernment.In2017,morethan70Ridgetounresidentssignedapetitioncallingforanupgradetothetown’sageingplayground.Theresidentswantedtocreateamoreflexibleandwelcomingspace.Thetown’sChiefExecutiveOfficersaidthatthemodernplaygroundwouldboostcommunityconnectedness.Hecommendedthecommunityfortheirenterpriseanddedicationinpushingfortheproject.Hesaidthathavingexperiencedaperiodofdrought,thecommunitywouldbenefitfromthepositiveandhappyplayareathatthenewplaygroundwouldoffer.FollowingconsultationwithjuniorstudentsatRidgetounP–12College,adetailedplanfortheplaygroundwasdeveloped.Theplancreatedanature-basedspacewithcubby1-makingopportunities,asandpitandawaterfeature,alongwithmodern,age-appropriateplayequipmentandsocialfacilities.TheCommunityDevelopmentManagersaidtheinspirationformanyelementsoftheplaygroundhadcomefromthejuniorstudentsofthecollege,whohadallbeenveryenthusiasticabouttheproject.ThelocalChamberofCommercerepresentativewelcomedtheinitiative,particularlybecauseithadinvolvedcommunitycollaboration,butshewasdisappointedthatthenewplayground,whileneeded,didnotbenefitthewholecommunity.Localbusinesseshadhopedthatadedicatedskateparkmighthavebeenincludedintheplan,providingskateboarderswithapurpose-builtvenueandtakingpressureofftownbuildingsandinfrastructure.
