2019 WEST ISLAND KARATE CHAMPIONSHIP
Osu Shihan, Sensei, Sempai,
It is with great pleasure that I invite you to the 18th edition of our annual tournament, the West Island Karate Championship. It will be held on Saturday, March 23rd, 2019. The tournament is open to karate-ka 22 years of age or under, with divisions in both kata and kumite.
The West Island Karate Championship is dedicated to building competitors’ fighting skills and experience gradually. Consequently, the rules at each level are designed to
prepare them for the ultimate competition in Kyokushin Karate: full-contact.
We want to foster the implementation of a tournament system which prepares our younger students, in stages, for international-level, full-contact competitions. By following the Japanese and European tournament models, young karate-ka can be slowly introduced to progressively higher levels of contact and intensity.
Note that due to a steady increase in participation over the last few years, I am pleased to announce that our tournament has been moved to a larger venue. It will be held in the gymnasium of Beaconsfield High School (250 Beaurepaire Dr, Beaconsfield).
This year's tournament will feature two very special Guests of Honour: kata champion, Sensei Asuka Taniguchi (Shihan Koi Branch) and Japanese National Team member, Sempai Yuto Eguchi (Kancho Midori Branch). Both are highly regarded for their experience in kata and kumite, respectively.
Sensei Asuka and Sempai Yuto will also be teaching seminars on Friday, March 22nd as well as Sunday, March 24th. Please go to seminars.shinkyokushin.ca for all the details, including times.
I hope that you will take the time to read this document in its entirety and note any changes from our previous tournaments.
On behalf of West Island Karate, I look forward to seeing you and your students on the 23rd of March at the 2019 West Island Karate Championship.
Osu,
John Kalaidopoulos Tournament Director West Island Karate
