In 2010, tourist numbers from Australia to Cook Islands broke records totaling
1584. Many had been people visiting friends and relations. This only had
returned in excess of $5.45 million to the economy.
The country’s Tourism CEO (Carmel Beattie); at the time appeared in
local newspapers and other media forms enforcing Cook Islanders to gear up.
He urged local people to maintain or even improve local ways of receiving
and entertaining tourists. He posed the vitality of selling good quality
handicrafts made from quality local materials, and the cuisine of the
traditional dishes as well. And using visitors’ survey findings; this market
averages a 9 – day stay and spent $425 per day, and second to Australia were
the US.
Much of the increase was due to the network activities promoted from
the airlines (direct flights from Sydney) and the newly established resorts’ and
restaurants’ outlets.
