Overview TheDivisionofStudentAffairsplaysacriticallyimportantroleinthepursuitofourengagementvision.TheStudentAffairsEngagementTeamrepresentstheengagement-relatedworkofthedivisionandhasdirectandconsistentinputintotheuniversity’sbroaderengagementwork.IntheFallof2016,theleadershipoftheDivisionofStudentAffairsgatheredagroupconsistingofonerepresentativefromeachofthe11divisionaldepartmentsaswellastheCo-CurricularCommittee.ThesejoinedwiththemembersoftheOfficeofStrategicPlanningandEngagementtoprovideadirectconnectionbetweenStudentAffairsandtheEngagementAdvisoryGroup.IntheSpringof2018,leadershiptransitionedtoJimMcConnel,AVPStudentLife&Involvement.
Thisreportprovidesanoverviewofeachdepartment’skeyengagement-relatedaccomplishmentsin17-18aswellascoreobjectivesfor18-19.

Career & Academic Planning (CAP) • ContinuedsecondyearofUnpaidInternshipScholarships,awarding27scholarshipstostudentsforthe
totalamountof$94,986[includeda$20,000donationfromtheCollegeofBusiness].• Successfullytaughttheinternshipcourse(IdLS486for2017)for13studentswhoneededtogetcredit
fortheirinternshipbutwereunabletoreceivecreditthroughtheiracademicdepartment.Thesecondcourseofferingwasapprovedfor2018asUNST480andstartedinMay2018.
• Providedarobustprofessionaltraininggroundfor38graduateassistants,studentassistants,peereducatorsandvolunteers.Inadditiontointentionaltrainingforallstudents,ongoingprofessionaldevelopmentisincludedasapartoftheirexperience.
• AllCSPAgraduatestudentsinterestedinpursuingcareerservicesandacademicadvisingworkservedasadvisorsandconductedmuchofthesameworkasCAPfull-timestaffundersupervisionandmentorshipwithprofessionalstaff.
• AssessmentandEmployerRelations&RecruitingGAscontributedgreatlytoourassessmentactivitiesandoncampusrecruitingefforts.
• Peereducatorsengagedwithstudentsviaindividualappointments,drop-inresumereviews,presentationsandvariouseventsandalsonetworkedwithemployers.
• IncorporatedourinauguralStudentAdvisoryBoardvolunteersintovariousactivities,gainingtheirstudentperspectiveandprovidingeducationalopportunities.

Community Service-Learning partnered with over 160 local, regional, national and international organizations through Service-Learning courses, Alternative Breaks and other service opportunities.
In addition, CS-L established a Service-Learning course designation to make it easier to identify courses and track student involvement.

Center for Multicultural Student Services (CMSS) • DEEPImpactinfluencedmeaningfulchangethroughouttheJMUcommunitythroughthedevelopment
ofprogramsandservicesthatheightenedawareness,increasedknowledgeandcelebratedthevalueofdiversityinallforms.DiversityEducatorswereabletofulfillavarietyofoutreachrequestsinclassroomsettingsaswellasstudentorganizations’eventsandactivities.
• TheInter-CulturalGreekCouncil(I.C.G.C.)establishedanewcommunitypartnershipwithOntheRoadCollaborativevolunteeringtopresentinformationaboutcollegeandstudentlifetohighschoolstudentswhoareparticipantsintheprogram.
• Inter-CulturalGreekCouncilnewprogram“BeyondthisPlace”-AprogramdesignedtocreateaspaceforalumnimembersofI.C.G.C.organizationsandcurrentundergraduatestomeetandengagewithoneanotherincludingnetwork,brainstormingandpaneldiscussionstogainagreaterunderstandingofGreek-Letteredorganizationalstructures,benefitsandopportunitiesofmembershipbeyondJMUandintotheglobalmarketplace.
• TheJMUMaleAcademyforAcademicAchievementandFemaleInstituteforLearningandDevelopmentpre-collegiateprogramswerefilledtocapacityduringthesummerof2017.Theparticipantsarerising9ththrough12thgradestudentswhohavetheopportunitytoliveandlearnandengageonacollegecampus,aswellasenrichtheirdevelopmentacademicallyandsocially.(JMUstudentvolunteersteach/facilitate/mentorhighschoolstudents.)
Community Service-Learning (CS-L) • Partneredwith109localandregionalnon-profits,schoolsand
governmentagencies.Inaddition,served57organizationsregionally,nationallyandinternationallythroughtheAlternativeBreakProgram.
• Connected1,287studentstocommunitypartnersaspartof58Service-Learningcoursesectionsand34uniquefacultypartners.Thesestudentsservedatotalof18,777hours.
• Involved572(490non-duplicate)studentsinAlternativeBreakswith135(116non-duplicate)studentsservingasbreakleadersorsmallgroupleaders,and61(48non-duplicate)membersofJMU’sfacultyandstaffservingaslearningpartners.Thesestudentsservedatotalof13,647hours.
• EstablishedaService-Learningcoursedesignationtomakeiteasiertoidentifycoursesandtrackstudentinvolvement.
• Assigned73FederalWorkStudystudentstoservelocallyforapproximately8-10hoursperweek.OftheCommunityFederalWorkStudystudentsthattooktheend-of-the-yearsurvey,100%agreedorstronglyagreedthattheybuiltastrongrelationshipwiththeircommunitypartner,thattheyconnectedmorewiththecommunitythroughtheirFWSexperienceandthatthisexperiencehadbetterpreparedthemtobeanengagedmemberofthecommunityaftergraduation.
• AwardedeightMadisonCommunityScholarshipstostudentsthatwentontocomplete1,849servicehours.

• Developedadepartment-wideapproachtoreflection,thecornerstoneofanyService-Learningprogram,by:
o invitingtwoconsultantsfromTrainingforChangeforathree-daygroupfacilitationtrainingforprofessionalstaff,studentstaff,campuspartnersandrepresentativesfromalocalnon-profit.
o adoptingtheP.A.R.E.(Preparation,Action,Reflection,andEvaluation)modelasfoundationaltoourprogrammingeffortsandtrainingCS-Lstudentstaffmembersonthemodelthroughactivitiesandreadings.

Learningfacultyand69%ofstudentsagreedorstronglyagreedthatthereflectionactivitiesfacilitatedbyCS-Lstudentstaffenhancedstudents'abilitiestoconnecttheirserviceexperiencestothecoursecontent.Furthermore,over96%ofspringbreakparticipantsfollowingtheirbreakindicateddailyreflectionandthatgroupswereconnectingtheirservicetosocialissues.
• InvolvedstafffromBreakAway,thenationalAlternativeBreakassociation,intrainingAlternativeBreakparticipantsinourspringretreat,andinvitedRachelSumekh,founderandCEOofSwipeOutHunger,toprovidethekeynoteattheAlternativeSpringBreakcommunitycelebration.
• PlayedakeyroleincontributingtothesuccessfulJMU“PeaceCorpsPrep”application,subsequentplanning,andimplementation.

EasternMennoniteUniversity)toofferWalkforHope,aneventthatencouragesstudentstocomeoutandraiseawarenessaboutdepressionandsuicide.
• Providedhighimpacttrainingopportunitiesforundergraduate,graduateandpost-graduatestudents,including:PeerMentorProgram(co-curricularproject),Undergraduateinternships(Psyc402),Fieldplacementexperience(Psyc495,capstoneproject),CCCollegeStudentPersonnelAdministration(CSPA)practicumposition,Graduateassistantships(i.e.,suicideriskreduction,treatmentprograms,frontdesk),Master’slevelcounselingexternship,Doctoralpracticum(Ph.D.&Psy.D),Doctoralinternshipinhealthservicepsychology,accreditedbytheAmericanPsychologicalAssociation,Post-mastersandpost-doctoralresidencyopportunities.

hostedthe9thAnnualDisabilityAwarenessWeekinMarch2018with18eventsdesignedtoprovidelearningopportunities.Studentstaffwhoparticipatedintheplanning,collaborationsandfacilitationofeventsenhancedskillsincommunicationandknowledgeofdisabilitytopics.
• ODSemployed21studentsinavarietyofrolesandusedadevelopmentalmodeltoengagewithstudentsabouttheirprofessionaldevelopmentandconnectingtheirworktotheirstudies.Studentsreflectingontheirexperiencesreportedincreasedskillsincommunication,problemsolvingandprofessionalpresentation.
• WiththeSchoolofTheatreandDance,ODSwasaco-sponsorforaresidencywiththeBlueAppleTheatrecompanyfromWinchester,Hampshire(U.K.).StudentswereactivelyinvolvedintheplanningandfacilitationofmanyelementsrequiredtohostthisresidencyincludingMasterClassesandMovementclasseswithHarrisonburgcommunitymembers.

Office of Residence Life (ORL) • Residentiallearningcommunities-StudentswhoparticipatedinaResidentialLearningCommunityhad
theuniqueopportunitytoliveandtakeclasseswithasmallgroupofstudentswhosharesimilarinterests.Over10%ofthe2017firstyearclassparticipatedinalearningcommunity.
• ORLemployedover200studentstoserveinRApositionsintheresidencehallsoncampus.RAsserveasleadersandmentorsinthehall,developprogrammingandtakecoursestogetherwithotherRAstaughtbyORLstaff.
• ORLemployed13undergraduateHallDirectorstomanageabuildingandsuperviseastaffofRAs(UGhalldirectorsarenottypicalatotheruniversities).HDssuperviseotherstudentstaffmembers,meetwithstudentswhoviolatepolicyandfacilitatetraining.
• TheAcademicMentoringProgramisdesignedforfirstyearstudentsonacademicprobationtoworkwithtrainedupper-classstudentacademicmentors.Mentorsworkedtoidentifytheneedsofeachmenteeanddevelopasuccessplanaccordingly.In2016-2017,thenewformatprovidedacademicmentorsfortheAVPofAcademicStudentServicestopairfirstyearstudentsonacademicprobationwithpeeracademicmentorstoteachstudyskills/timemanagement.Thisyear96studentsenrolledasmenteesand19studentsservedasmentors.
• ORLcollaboratedwiththeDuxLeadershipCentertoengagefirstyearstudentsinaFirstYearInclusiveLeadershipProgram.Thiswasa12-weekprogrambasedintheexperientiallearningmodeltoprovideinteractiveopportunitiesforstudentstolearnaboutthemselvesandinclusivebehaviors.FacilitatorsalsousedRestorativePracticeStrategiestofacilitateconversationsarounddiversityandinclusion.Sixteenstudentsparticipatedinthefirstcohort.
Office of Student Accountability and Restorative Practices (OSARP) • TheOfficeofStudentAccountabilityandRestorativePracticescreatedandemployedstudentsinthe
RestorativePracticesProgramAssistantstudentpositionduringAY2017-18.Thisfederalwork-studypositionhelpedorganizeandfacilitaterestorativeprocessesusedbyOSARPtoaddressharmsinthecommunity,servinginarolethatfurtheredtheeducationalexperienceofotherstudents.Thispositionrequiredthestudentemployeetocoordinateandcommunicatewithcurrentstudents,Accused

OSARP provides opportunities for engaged learning through the paid and volunteer roles available in their office.
Students,harmedparties,JMUfacultyandstaff,and/ormembersoftheHarrisonburgcommunity,uptoandincludingfacilitatingrestorativeprocesseswhereinAccusedStudentstookactiveresponsibilityfortheirdecisions,wereconfrontedwiththeharmedpartiesandharmscreated,andworkedcollaborativelytodeterminewhatroletheywillhaveinrepairingtheharminthecommunity.ThissupportednotonlyengagedlearningandcommunityengagementnotonlyforthestudentemployedastheRPPA,butfacilitatedengagedlearningandcommunityengagementforthestudentsparticipatingintheserestorativeprocesses.
• InAY2017-2018,twenty-fourstudentsservedasactivemembersoftheAccountabilityBoard,servingonpanelswhoactastheoriginaldecisionmakingbodyforcasesinwhichastudentischargedwithminor,majororflexiblepolicyviolationsasclassifiedbytheOfficeofStudentAccountabilityandRestorativePractices.Thesepanelsevaluateevidence,applypolicy,andweightheperspectiveoftheAccusedStudentandwitnessestodetermineiftheAccusedStudentisresponsibleornotresponsibleforviolatingpolicyand,ifnecessary,assigntheappropriatesanctions.Oftheover550hoursthatfaculty,staff,andstudentvolunteersspentservingonthesepanels,215ofthosevolunteerhourscamefromstudentparticipation.Thissupportsengagedlearningandcommunityengagementbyhavingstudentsbethefacilitatorsoftheeducationalexperienceofotherundergraduatestudents,byapplyingconceptslearnedintrainingtotheirrole,exercisingcriticalthinkingskillsandbyservingasthevoiceofthecommunityindecisionsofresponsibilityand/orsanctioningforallegedviolationsoftheJMUStudentHandbook.ThepracticeofhavingstudentmembersontheAccountabilityBoardwillcontinueintoAY2018-2019.

Through UREC, 16 students traveled to Nassau, Bahamas to work with the Uriah McPhee primary school and provide the children with an experiential learning opportunity through camp-style recreation activities.
