Preface
Hello,
At Penn State, we firmly believe that the premier educational delivery
system in the nation today is a total agricultural education program
that encompasses dynamic classroom instruction, youth leadership
development through a Career and Technical Student Organization
(FFA) and Laboratory/Work-Based Experiential Education (SAE). A
school-based secondary agricultural education program that delivers on
those components will have a positive impact on student achievement.
Just as the fastest race car needs a reliable driver, the greatest
program, needs a capable leader to provide direction. The single most
important element to the success of any education program is the
teacher. We are pleased to offer you this teacher candidate profile
book to introduce you to our 2015 agricultural teacher candidates who
are prepared and excited to embrace the challenge of making a positive
difference in the lives of students through agricultural education.
Please contact us if we can be of assistance or if you have any questions
regarding our teacher preparation program. Developing great
agricultural teachers is something we take incredible pride in.
Yours in quality education,
Dr. Daniel D. Foster Dr. John C. Ewing Laura Rice

“Tyler Cremeans is a natural at teaching agriscience. He has a true gift for relating to students and sharing his passion for agriculture with them, at any grade level. He has brought a high level of excitement and enthusiasm to our program, especially in his aquaculture classes, and kids are often talking about his class to others. After only 3 months, he has become a valued asset to our staff and is always willing to serve as a team player in whatever needs to get done both in our department and in our FFA chapter. We are very lucky to have him here in our program! William Davenport, Director, Ellis Clark Regional Agriscience Program Nonnewaug High School
Woodbury, Connecticut
2014 Graduate Tyler Cremeans
“Mike Petrun has enhanced the learning experiences at Winnisquam Regional High School through his student-centered instructional strategies and 'minds-on' approach to student engagement. Mike has high aspirations to bring new learning to our agricultural students through place-based learning and greater knowledge of the natural world in which we live”. Tom Laliberte, Principal Winnisquam Regional High School
Tilton, New Hampshire
2014 Graduate Michael Petrun
Ms. Cashell is an excellent new teacher. She has invigorated the Agricultural Program at Oakdale High School. She is energetic and enthusiastic. These characteristics are contagious in her class. She has extremely high expectations and is able to get all of her students to meet those expectations. She has students talk to one another to have them question and/or support answers given by others. This is a phenomenal way to increase the rigor in her classroom. I look forward to seeing her continue to grow as a professional and to expand the agricultural offerings at OHS. "Mackenzie McCollum is a welcome addition to our faculty at Danville Area Middle School. She brings the Science classroom to life through engaging, inquiry-based lessons that are student-centered. Ms. McCollum implemented a new CASE course within her first year of teaching. She represents the best of the profession among new teachers." Dawn Brookhart, Director of Curriculum, Instruction, and Technology Danville Middle School Danville, Pennsylvania
2013 Graduate Mackenzie McCollum
“I am pleased to write about how fortunate we are to have acquired Cameron
Schirmer at Mohawk. PSU obviously has a strong command of aligning their teacher preparation program to the needs of public schools across the commonwealth. Mr. Schirmer has taken theory into hands-on practical vocational/agricultural experience. There was little or no acclimation period!
Our students are being well instructed for a bright future.” Raymond C. Omer, Principal Mohawk Jr-Sr High School Bessemer, Pennsylvania 2012 Graduate Cameron Schirmer
Laura Kennedy has demonstrated effective teaching in both formal and informal observations. She is working with students well as she has a nice rapport with them and is able to weave instructional, hands on and affective activities into her daily teaching. I appreciate her talents and look forward to her growth here at WMS as at the agriculture teacher. Thanks and good job with Laura!

"The PSU Teach Ag teacher preparation program has been so
beneficial to my career that it's fruits have followed me to another
continent. This year, I am volunteering with AgriCorps in Ghana as a
secondary agricultural science teacher and school 4-H advisor.
Experiential, student-centered learning is foundational to the PSU
program, and thus has become an essential aspect my pedagogy
here in Africa. Experiential learning is almost unknown in Ghanaian
schools, so when I introduced student activities in the classroom,
positive results were immediately seen: student engagement,
motivation, and even test scores have already visibly improved in my
students. I am proud to have such an outstanding teacher preparation program to
support me as I attempt to encourage a paradigm shift from teacher-centered,
disciplinary classrooms to student-centered, experiential classrooms in Ghana."
2014 Graduate, Allison Hoover

"The Penn State teacher education program gave me the
tools for success. I was able to step immediately into
employment. In addition to being ready to take that first job,
Penn State has given me a multitude of resources. I have
made connections with teachers throughout the country. A
great teacher never gives up and Penn State taught me
that I was capable of more than I ever expected. I learned
to reach higher, work harder and to use my resources
wisely."

"As a beginning teacher, I am thankful for the relevance and practicality of the assignments and course work within the Penn State program. I am frequently using assignments and lesson plans that I developed during my courses and student-teaching internship, which demonstrates the insight of the Teacher Education staff to prepare students for their future career in education." 2013 Graduate, Darla Romberger Cumberland Valley High School, Mechanicsburg, PA Ag Science Instructor
"When I walked off the stage with my diploma I knew beyond a shadow of a doubt I was going to be a successful teacher because the Penn State Ag. Ed. program and the wonderful teachers, like Dr. Foster and Dr. Ewing, prepared me for any school, in any state, regardless of the school's agricultural pathway. I don't always know the answers, but thanks to the Ag. Ed. program I have so many tools in my toolbox that when something doesn't work I don't panic I just reach in my toolbox and try something else. I think the biggest thing I learned is to never stop learning and ALWAYS be a reflective practitioner. I have had a lot of successes this year and it is because Dr. Foster trained me to always think, "What if I did this instead of this..." I am constantly looking back over my taught lessons and trying to make it better, and more meaningful for my students-this is a quality I don't think a lot of universities try to instill in their students, but thankfully Penn State does."
2013 Graduate, Brittney Marsh AAEC Red Mountain Early College High School, Mesa, Arizona Ag Science Instructor
“Penn State’s agricultural education program has prepared me for more than simply being a good teacher. They have helped me develop a list of resources and experts in which to glean information from. My network of proven ag teachers has grown tremendously over the years and Penn State can be commended for this. You can rest assure that any agriculture education student from Penn State is prepared to be the best ag teacher anywhere in the United States!” 2012 Graduate, Philip Haussener Cedar Crest High School, Lebanon, PA Agricultural Science Teacher

Why teach agriculture?
Agriculture is a crucial part of everyone’s daily lives. The entire world depends on sustainable agricultural
production. No agriculture, no food. No food, no people. Impacting positive change on human-welfare starts with
agriculture. This can be done by serving people in agriculture; providing them the resources, means, and
education necessary to succeed. I want to effect change; to be the link connecting motivated youth to knowledge
and resources. Global competency is a growing need in our future leaders. Therefore, I aspire to challenge
students to grow into their roles as global citizens. Students will develop the adaptive skills and awareness needed
to create, preserve, change and improve global society.

What type of program would you like to have?
I would like to develop a program that incorporates international agriculture into the standard curriculum. This
program will include several focus areas, ranging from plant science to construction. My goal is to enhance the
quality of the program by leveraging my extensive international experience and applying it to an American
classroom. By doing this, I can increase awareness and increase my students’ capacity to solve complex problems
in local and global agriculture. I am motivated to utilize programs that are capitalizing on expansion opportunities.
I have ideas for programs in community involvement, FFA, and SAE projects. My drive to accomplish my goals,
combined with strong community involvement can create significant change. I have proven my dedication
through competing in and winning international military skills challenges, succeeding on teams as the only female.
I thrive on challenges, and I look forward to growing and developing as an agricultural teacher and leader.

Why teach agriculture?
I believe that School-Based Agricultural Education is a combination of my two truest passions; the
science of production agriculture and the art of cultivating student success. Agriculture Education is
unique in the sense that the experience is about the student and encouraging them to become the best
person they can be while also teaching and instilling the principals and disciplines of production
agriculture, one of the oldest and most essential professions to date. The future of our industry is in the
hands of our students and as a future agricultural educator, it will be my privilege to assist my students
in becoming the positive agents of change that our agricultural industry needs.

Why teach agriculture?
I chose to teach agriculture because for me, it seemed like a natural fit. Growing up on a farm, a passion
and appreciation for agriculture has been engrained in me from a young age. In high school, I enrolled in
agricultural sciences courses and joined FFA. The agricultural sciences program provided me with a
much needed sense of belonging, and taught me more about the most important industry in the world.
Furthermore, FFA opened many doors for me, and helped me to recognize my own potential. I quickly
discovered that agricultural education was the perfect career for me; combining my passion for
agriculture with my desire to teach, and allowing me to spread knowledge about agriculture, while
helping students succeed.

Why teach agriculture?
Agriculture education offers the unique opportunity to teach students about agriculture while helping
them grow as a person. I intend to push my students to become the best that they can be, but also
support them through that growth process. I want to encourage them to learn and pursue opportunities
that will help them in their lives and careers. One day they will be adults and have to function in the
“real world.” By teaching agriculture, I can help ensure that they will be well-prepared wherever their
future leads.

What type of program would you like to have?
I am open to any type of program. I would love the opportunity to help any type of program grow and
find out what it needs to help the students be as successful as possible. In addition, it would be a great
chance to either apply what I am already familiar with or to experience a new environment and learn to
work with it. My second grade teacher always used to tell us a quote by Henry Ford “If you think you
can do a thing, or you think you can’t do a thing, you’re right”, to motivate us to try even if we didn’t
think we could do something. I would like to instill that same “try your best” attitude in my own
classroom. I want my students to believe in themselves and I need to show that I believe in them. If
they have strong self-efficacy, they’ll be both more motivated and more self-confident.

Why teach agriculture?
Why not? Why not choose a career where I can combine my love of working with animals with the joy of helping
people, where I can teach students skills and knowledge applicable to their everyday lives. Becoming an
agricultural educator, I want to not only teach my students agricultural knowledge and skills, I want to teach my
students to discover their passions. I want to expose future students to the impact of agriculture on their daily
lives, and mold the next generation of leaders to be aware of and engaged in agriculture. The amount of time most
agricultural educators spend with their students allows them to build relationships that push their students to
explore interests and passions they may have never even known they had, developing them into future leaders
both in and out of agriculture. Agricultural education stretches outside the classroom, past a student’s high school
graduation, guiding them towards discovering their passions. If I have the opportunity to help future students on
this discovery, why would I not want to teach agriculture?

What type of program would you like to have?
I would like to have a well-rounded, multi-teacher program where my students can become well-versed in many
areas of agriculture while also having the option to become specialized in areas that most interest them. My
strengths are animal science, international agriculture and agricultural communications, which could lend itself
well to having an animal science pathway within the program and having international agriculture and agricultural
communications incorporated into all of the areas. A multi-teacher program would allow greater flexibility and
expansion to the program’s activities, allowing the program to enhance all parts of its three-circle model. I prefer a
program in an urban community, as that is my background and where I think I can make the most impact within
agricultural education, but I am open to any program where I can best contribute to the students’ development. I
am looking for a program where I can have the greatest impact on students, regardless of where in the nation it is
located.

I would love to teach in an urban or suburban program in an area where agriculture is not as widely

agricultural education. I hope to have a program that has contents all components of ag education

Why teach agriculture?
Empower . Grow . Succeed . Educate
I have always had two main passions in life that drove me to pursue a lifelong career as an Agricultural
Educator. One of those passions is my desire to simply help people. I enjoy making the lives of others
better by helping them recognize their purpose and the potential they have to be successful. My other
passion is agriculture. I have seen firsthand the importance agriculture and how it serves the needs of
the people in our country and our world. As the population continues to grow, now more than ever do
we need competent individuals in the field of agriculture. When considering my two passions, the only
logical career choice I could think of was to teach agriculture. I believe agricultural education has the
power to help students realize their full potential in ways that encourage them to lead successful lives
and be competent individuals in society. Nothing would make me more proud than being part of a
profession that serves as a positive role model in the lives of students and helps shape and mold them
into successful individuals through the means of agriculture.

What type of program would you like to have?
I am very open to diverse programs. I would like to work in a small single or multi-teacher program that

heavily engaged in their community. My interests lie in the areas of environmental sciences, animal
sciences, international agriculture and leadership.

Relevant Experiences
Any experience is an opportunity to gain knowledge, skills and dispositions in a given subject area. I value and
appreciate the experiences I have had in life because of the benefits they yield in my professional development.
One of the most influential experiences in my life was growing up on a dairy and equine farm. This way of life has
given me an in-depth knowledge of the aspects of agriculture. I have also been fortunate to have gone to high
school where Ag education was established. Having gone through the program I was fortunate to have gained skills
that allowed me to grow professionally as a student. Being part of a successful Ag program has enabled me to think
critically about how I might want my program to function when I become an Ag teacher. One final experience that
is relevant to my degree is the internship that I was a part of this summer. I worked for the 4-H extension office in
York County. I gained experience in not only taking kids to conferences, showing animals, and conducting
workshops, but I also helped start the urban education program. This year we started a community garden for inner
city students to come and learn about gardening. Being exposed to these diverse environments and experiences
has aided me in becoming a well prepared and qualified Agricultural Educator.

I’ve got a passion for agriculture and how it impacts people. This drives me into the agriculture field. I
found that the agriculture program that I attended while in school helped me blossom and shaped me
into the person I am today. I want to provide that for students. I want to provide a safe space for them
to grow in a challenging high school environment. I want to create positive influences and a passion for
something in their lives. Our students are the future, and I want to take part in helping them grow into
young leaders that are positive agriculture advocates.

One of my greatest achievements was getting the president position at my local FFA chapter. I worked
very hard to get that position and had the support of many of my peers. I have worked at 3 different
food industry establishments. I have excelled in each place because of my work ethic and my willingness
to broaden my horizons. I could work many different positions at each place and left on great terms with
each place. I was chosen to participate in the ATA conclave at National Convention. I feel very proud to
have this opportunity.

What type of program would you like to have?
I would really enjoy working in a rural school area that has a good balance of classroom instruction/lab,
SAE and FFA. I see myself moving out west to fill one of the many open agriculture educator positions or
staying in Pennsylvania to teach. I would like a program that has support and can fill the need of the
community.

My love for agriculture stemmed from my passion of horses. I have worked with horses for many years and when
going into high school I found that the FFA had horse related activities. From joining as a freshman, I held the offices
of Student Advisor, Treasurer and President in the FFA. I participated in many career development events, social
events, meetings and leadership opportunities. I have also co-facilitated a work shop at the fall leadership
conference while in college.

Why teach agriculture?
You ask why Teach Ag? My answer is why wouldn’t I Teach Ag? Agriculture is one of my passions, so why
not take one of my passions and share it with the world in the best way possible. Agriculture is a lasting
industry so I want to educate our younger generations about this continuously growing industry that
provides for the global economy. I want to develop my students into educated adults by opening as
many doors as possible for them to achieve success. Not only would this be a personal development for
my students, but for me as well. To see my students succeed is something I can only imagine of until I
make it real. So again I ask why wouldn’t you want to Teach Ag?

What type of program would you like to have?
My Ideal program would be to have a high school ag program that possesses the three circle model of ag
education, by representing each section to its fullest capacity. As well as an agriscience program that
incorporates the following classes to be offered: Plant Science, Animal Science, Ag Mechanics, and
Leadership courses to help develop my students for future endeavors. I would also enjoy having a global
agriculture class that could potentially gain global experiences. Once I am established at a program I
would like to incorporate STEM into the classroom curriculum and eventually become CASE certified.
Relevant Experiences
Living in small town Coudersport, Pennsylvania all I was surrounded by was everything agriculture. Being raised on
a production farm I have learned a lot and continue to learn new information. However it didn’t truly click for me
until I used what I learned from my family farm in my first agriculture class. By gaining those connections I was
completely hooked and everything I did revolved around agriculture and FFA. I took as many high agriculture
classes that my schedule would allow me and soaked up knowledge from school in hopes to apply to a future
career. As well as being an active member in the FFA by competing in competitions and holding officer positions all
four years of high school. I am now in my senior year at The Pennsylvania State University finishing up my
bachelor’s degree in Agriculture and Extension Education.

Why teach agriculture?
Deciding what you want to do for the rest of your life is a choice that is hard for anyone but for me I
knew that the rest of my life would be geared around agriculture in one way or another. I have always
worked with younger exhibitors teaching them skills that they could use forever. It was not until I had
numerous people tell me you should become an agricultural teacher that it hit me. Living the dream of
showing livestock gave me a passion for agriculture and all it has to offer that sometimes you just
cannot explain but must be experienced firsthand. This passion that I crave and hold tight is what I want
to pass onto others. Teaching agriculture is just one way I can change the lives of others and show them
what agriculture has to offer them.

What type of program would you like to have?
The agricultural program that I would like to have would be production based. I would like to have
classes that focus on horticulture, environmental issues, and animal production. With this production
based environment having a lab setting that allowed for small and large animals would give that extra
learning environment for students. I am not limiting myself to only teaching in a production based
program but this would be the areas I feel I can accelerate the best in.

My life has been filled with opportunities throughout agriculture and the industry. Growing up in a small town I
was an active member in 4-H and FFA where I competed in numerous Career Development Events, judging

started in seventh grade. Since graduating high school and becoming too old for 4-H I have dedicated my time
working with exhibitors throughout the year with showmanship, feeding plans, SAE books, taking new showman to
shows to gain experience, and I have started up the Supreme Showman Drive event at my local fair for the junior
exhibitors. Attending Penn State University I have been a member of Teach Ag Society and Block and Bridle where I
have held officer positions. I am an employee at the Swine Research Building and held a yearlong internship with

Why teach agriculture?
With modern society becoming further separated from agriculture and the agricultural lifestyle, I believe it is
important to bring this knowledge to the younger generation. With current trends it is believed that the world
population will reach 9 billion people by 2040. It is our job to make sure that our students are prepared to not only
feed the world, but to also understand where their food comes from and how agriculture affects all of us. 1 in 6
jobs are related to agriculture, so I believe that as teachers, we need to prepare our students for that modern
workforce. Whether its biotechnology, diesel mechanics, international agriculture, agribusiness, or agricultural
production our students need to understand the value and importance of agriculture today.

Why teach agriculture?
When I was growing up the last thing I would have told you was that I aspire to be and agricultural
educator. Through my high school career I was convinced that I wanted to be a pioneer and live out west in my log
cabin or live up north harvesting cranberries. Either way, I knew I wanted my future to involve agriculture in a
large scale or a homesteading way. Once in my undergraduate years, I knew that agriculture was the way I should
go to connect my love of land and my love of people. I was guided to Agricultural and Extension Education and
haven’t looked back, knowing this was the way to make that connection.

Why teach agriculture?
I have been asked this questions numerous times, why do I want to teach agriculture? Because our country needs
agricultural education, we need strong leaders to educate our leaders of tomorrow. I believe in the future of
agriculture and in order to have a future in agriculture we need agricultural educators. I have a passion for
teaching and a passion for student success and through the power of agricultural education I am taking this
passion and changing the world. I may not have the next big idea or end world hunger but one day one of my
students may have the innovative idea to help end world hunger, end global warming or even our energy crisis. I
want to teach agriculture because I want to make a difference in the agricultural community. Having come from an
AG ED program in high school I have seen the impact my advisor had on me and I hope to have that impact on all
my students. The opportunities I have received through FFA and agricultural education are unlike any other
programs out there and I want more children in our country to have these same opportunities. Why do I want to
teach agriculture? I want to teach because I care about the next generation and I want to give more students the
chance to change the world.

What type of program would you like to have?
I would enjoy working in a diverse rural program. Coming from a small town I could not imagine living anywhere
else, I enjoy the feeling of small towns and their communities. Personally I feel strong in the areas of animal
science and agronomy. I also feel confident in leadership, communication, business, and other life skills. I am
currently learning more about agricultural mechanic skills through course work here at Penn State and will gain
further knowledge of both horticulture and agricultural mechanics through my student teaching internship. I value
both of these core subjects as vital to any general agricultural classroom and that is why I seek out further
education in these subjects.
