Dear Friends
The other day at breakfast my wife, Ann, and I were talking about how much gardening has changed in a very short period of time. When we were just married--ok, not such a very short period of time ago--if you talked about your garden the assumption was that you meant toma-toes, beans and corn. Not so these days, when garden can mean anything from the stunning beauty of Longwood Gardens to the stunning simplicity of a few containers on a balcony 20 stories above a city street.
In our case, were in the process of installing a Mediterranean garden at our home, complete with an expanse of gravel; containers, urns and troughs for succulents and agaves; and a set of French bistro chairs and table. Pretty typical look...unless you garden in southeastern Pennsyl-vania like we do.
Our prior garden design project was to create a Jurassic Park on a low, undulating hillside east of our house. This area features only plants with large foliage, some ridiculously large like the Magnolia macrophylla or the Paulownia tree we cut to the ground every year, or plants with big, coarse foliage like castor bean plant, tetrapanax and angelica. The only thing missing is a dinosaur or two.
Other areas feature mixed beds of perennials, shrubs, small trees and--dont tell anybody--annuals. This is our laboratory, where we constantly take out plants that dont perform or dont fit, add new Star Roses and Plants introductions, and play with color and color combinations. The sense is one of exuberance, though sometimes by the end of the season it borders on excessiveness. And we love it.
And the containers. We have over 70, mostly mixed but some with single plants (and all finally on a drip irrigation system, thankfully) which are placed on the terrace and throughout the garden. A few of these containers are replanted at least three times a year in order to have a completely different look appropriate to the changing seasons. Were not unique in this regard, but how many containers did you see in a garden setting a dozen years ago? How many bananas and elephant ears?
Although our case may be a little extreme, we are typical in how we approach gardening. The point is to create a space that gives you pleasure, that contains surprises, no matter the size of the space or the plants you choose.
We are richer than the pharaohs, at least when it comes to the palette of plants for our gardens. And we at Star Roses and Plants are proud to be bringing you new varieties to add to that palette.
Happy Gardening!

Research and Development
testing and evaluation of all Star Roses and Plants continues to expand as we up-grade and develop newer and more rigorous methods to ensure the excellence of all plants we introduce.
Over the years we have introduced many award winning plants including The Meserve Hollies and more than 30 varieties that have received the All American Rose Selection Award. Those include the first for a miniature rose (debut), and the first for a landscape rose (Bonica). More recent winners include The knock Out Rose and Sunshine daydream, the first Grandiflora to win the award under no-spray testing conditions. Additionally, Francis Meilland was the only Hybrid tea to win the AARS award under these no-spray trials.
A Rigorous Selection Process
Since our founding, our philosophy when introducing new plants has been based on two principles. First, we maintain very close relationships with hybridizers who entrust us to evaluate their seedlings. Second, we maintain a superior testing facility to ensure that only top-performing plants are introduced.
Star Roses and Plants/conard-Pyle works with well-known and amateur hybridizers to introduce their plants to the market. This commitment goes back to the mid-1930s when conard-Pyle partnered with Meilland International, and with kathleen Meserve, who single-handedly redefined what Hollies are in North American gar-dens. Those enduring relationships, as well as more recent ones with Bill Radler, the breeder of The knock Out Rose and Jim Sproul, creator of eyeconics, break-through hybrid Hulthemia roses, highlight our commitment to bring new and excit-ing plants to market.
We operate full testing facilities on both the east and West coasts. Roses must per-form well in our three locations in order to be introduced to market. We also con-duct extensive production trials to make sure that each new potential introduction performs well on its own roots, in containers as well as in the garden. This sets a very high standard that is unmatched in the industry.
In roses, we evaluate and test more than 1,000 potential new varieties from all over

the world at all our locations. They undergo an extensive three-year trial period with no spraying for pest or dis-eases, and are subject to preliminary market feedback. At the end of the process, between 25 to 30 varieties survive the process. At this point, our experts determine whether or not to enter the roses into a two year trial at 15 gar-dens located across the unites States. We organize these trial sites internally and make sure to visit them every year to see how our roses are doing. On average, 12 to 15 potential new releases are tested each year. Following the results of these nationwide trials, usually 5 to 7 new roses make it to the market. We also evaluate our new peren-nials and woody plants along similar rigorous evaluation processes. every year, breeders trust us with hundreds of plants that undergo the same thorough process that results in such popular releases as Thuja Fire chief, Nepeta Ju-nior Walker and Buxus Highlander. Award winning care-free Wonder, carefree delight, carefree Spirit and of course, The knock Out Rose, are some of the most popu-lar graduates of this very difficult process.
Looking forward, we are committed to work even harder at increasing the performance and quality of our new in-troductions to better meet the higher expectations that consumers have come to expect from Star Roses and Plants/conard-Pyle, the leader in bringing new plants to North American gardens today.
Own Root Roses
An own root rose is a superior product to a budded rose. For the past five years, we have been extensively trialing all potential new introductions on their own roots. A rose grown on its own roots makes a better product for many reasons:
1. Your own root rose will be more hardy than a bud-ded rose. The process of budding weakens the crown, making it vulnerable to extreme winter temperatures.
2. Your own root rose will be more bushy and shapely than a budded rose over time. Since it is growing on its own roots, it will naturally send up shoots from the soil, resulting in a fuller plant with more blooms.
3. You will never have to deal with pruning out unwanted root stock suckers. Your new rose will always be true to type. Have you ever had a yellow rose suddenly bloom red? This is most likely from the understock sending up shoots which may overpower your rose if left unchecked.
4. Since all of the material we use for production is virus indexed, this helps to eliminate the spread of virus which can so easily be transmitted through the process of budding.
Virus Indexing
Since the 1980s all our new rose introductions are tested at the Plant Foundation Services of The university of cali-fornia, davis. This ensures that the material we use for pro-duction is free of virus. We also use the same approach at Oregon State university with our perennials and woody ornamentals. Maintaining virus indexed material is critical to ensuring that plants propagated commercially will perform to their best potential.

Facilities
The Star Roses and Plants/conard-Pyle liner production greenhouse became func-tional in the Fall of 2008. The greenhouse is a Rough Brothers design with 16 gutter height. There are three growing zones for production that total 126,000 sq ft. In these areas over one million 15-cell and 32-cell plugs are produced which include roses as well as many other proprietary woody plants and perennials. Our genetics are grown to the highest quality standards that customers have come to know from Star Roses and Plants/conard-Pyle. Irrigation is applied through twelve GtI com-mon sense booms which are programmed to deliver the exact amount of water and fertilizer that the plants need. Ritter System side walls and roofs open and close from a programmed Argus computer system that continuously monitors environmental conditions. cutting edge production practices include Lean Flow labor systems, mechanization, and biological pest management. Our propriety ornamental plants are shipped throughout North America and canada.

Background and History
NovaFlora was founded by dr. Michael S. dobres in 1993, to apply modern techniques in plant genetics to the de-velopment of consumer-friendly and environmentally friendly ornamental flowering plants. In 1995, NovaFlora entered into an exclusive agreement with Star Roses and Plants/conard-Pyle to develop roses and other high-value ornamental shrubs and perennials. In 2006, NovaFlora moved on to Star Roses and Plants/conard-Pyles West Grove, Pennsylvania campus, thereby consolidating its office, laboratory and greenhouse operations in a single commercial site. At the end of 2011, NovaFlora merged into Star Roses and Plants/conard-Pyle. This signals the evolution of Star Roses and Plants/conard-Pyle from an introducer to a breeder of new varieties. NovaFloras team of highly trained breeders and technicians will continue to supply a steady pipeline of new varieties to Star Roses and Plants/conard-Pyle for evaluation and trials each year. Its recent successes include coreopsis crme caramel Nepeta Junior Walker and Rosa Bubble double. Look for more exciting releases in the coming years.
We are also committed to training the next generation of plant breeders. We regularly recruit student interns to train in our greenhouses and labs. Students from Longwood Gardens and the university of delaware are a common sight at NovaFlora, but we also host international students from as far afield as costa Rica and Honduras.
About Breeding
With traditional cross-pollination, pollen from one flower is dusted onto another flower. The process is repeated thousands of times and the seeds are germinated and screened for new and interesting varieties. Not all crosses yield viable seed, so we often have to intervene. A few
weeks after pollination we remove the developing seed and transfer it from the greenhouse to the laboratory. There the young embryo is removed from the developing seed and placed on petri-plates. Nutrients in the plates help the embryo develop into a seedling. After a few weeks it can be returned to the greenhouse and will develop into a plant. This time consuming and delicate process is called embryo-rescue. It is reserved for crosses between distantly related species. It allows us to combine character-istics that would otherwise be difficult to obtain. In other cases we simply want to tweak an existing variety. Perhaps make it more compact or alter its color. In that case we will use gamma ray mutagenesis to induce genetic changes that only target one or two desired characteristics.
Breeding and Technology
At NovaFlora we blend the old with the new. We use many of the time-tested techniques of traditional breed-ing, but we also employ a broad range of modern tech-niques including embryo-rescue, mutagenesis and dNA fingerprinting. dNA fingerprinting is used for verification of new hybrids. A form of botanical forensics, this allows us to confirm rare and difficult hybrids and to more effec-tively protect our intellectual property.
to stay at the cutting edge NovaFlora collaborates with breeders and scientists from government and universities to improve, refine and develop new methods. We speak at and attend research conferences to tell others about our work and hear about the latest methods and discover-ies in plant breeding and genetics.

Storage Keep in cool, moist environment. Do not freeze.
Protection Do not leave in sun. Keep box and plastic liner closed when not in
use to prevent the plants from drying out. Dry roots will delay top plant growth.
Trim Roots Use sharp clean, pruning shears. ONLY trim tips of roots if necessary. We work
hard to grow a healthy large root system, please do not destroy them.
Trim Back Tops Use sharp, clean pruning shears. Cut canes leaving 4-6 from bud union. Cut each cane on a slight angle. Low top pruning encourages strong bottom
breaks.
Planting Insert plant and fill pot to very top. The graft knob should be about 1 above the
soil line. It is OK to force the whole root system into the
pot.
Watering Thoroughly water in your roses. Compact soil and remove air pockets. Keep soil moist. Newly planted roses require additional watering. Overhead water is reccommended until the
rose is leafed out. Dry and windy conditions or in areas of low
humidity overhead watering may be required several times a day uNtIL the rose is leafed out, then allow leaves to dry before sunset. This will help prevent many diseases.

2013 Marketing Plan
What an exciting year this is shaping up to be! Weve been working on the launch of our new house brand, Star Roses and Plants. With the development and intro-duction of so many exceptional new varieties year after year, it was clear that we needed a house brand to not only house our great plants but also to promote and support them with our strategic marketing plan.
We have spent a lot of time thinking through these changes and are fully convinced that they will further strengthen and solidify our branded lines which will allow us to market new, exciting lines of roses, perennials and woody ornamentals more effec-tively. The end goal in all of this is to help us be able to provide you with superior genetics backed by superior and consistent brand marketing, as well as to help increase your sales and your customers sell-through.
With this new house brand comes a complete company re-branding, which we are in the process of implementing. In addition to our new Star Roses and Plants logo, youll see our other materials have received a face-lift as well all P.O.P. ma-terial, packaging, print advertisements, digital advertisements, our e-Magazine and e-Newsletters, our presence in social media, and our websites just to name a few. We encourage you to use these materials to support our brands, which will help to build a consistent look at retail.
consumers know to look for our chartreuse green pots when they are buying The knock Out Family of Roses at retail so weve leveraged the unmistakable color and carried it through to all other product categories. Youll now see our line of drift Groundcover Roses in the same chartreuse pot and weve added an optional Star Roses and Plants pot for all of our other rose, perennial and woody genetics. con-sumers expect a lot when they purchase a knock Out Rose in a chartreuse pot and we are confident that our new genetics are up to the same challenge.

Eyeconic Lychee Lemonade
eyeconic Lychee Lemonade Lychee Lemonade is a new color edition to the Eyeconic series. The color is ivory cream with a deep burgundy blotch finishing almost white with a pink blotch. The flower is semi-double. It is vigorous but with the smaller habit of a miniature. The blotch does not fade in the heat of summer. It would make a great container plant for the West. See page: 41
Fired Up
Fired up Fired Up has a very unique and striking color. The color can best be described as yellow and bright orange striped, finishing blood orange. The color does not fade in the heat or when finishing and it reblooms well. It has very good tolerance to rust and mildews. Fired Up is best recommended for the dry climates of the West. See page: 85

Look-A-Likes BougainFeelYa
BougainFeelYa is the newest edition to the continuously growing Look-A-Likes series. This is a new series of roses with blooms that dont look like traditional rose blossoms. The flowers of BougainFeelYa are dark red, non-fading and they are shaped similar to that of a Bougainvillea, but dont be fooled, this is not a climbing rose! Flowers form continuously throughout the season and it is covered with hips in the fall. BougainFeelYa performs well on its own roots and is tolerant to a range of soil pHs. It is also very resistant to rust and mildews and has a decent tolerance for black spot. See page: 36

Roses | Regional Roses22 Order now at 1-800-457-1859
M ost plants are regional , either by nature, or by design when they are bred and selected in different cl imates and geographical areas.
roses are no different. most of the traditional Hybrid teas, grandifloras and Floribundas were born and bred in the relatively mild and forgiving climates of California, while most of the shrub roses come from more rugged areas. While some roses such as Drift perform well nationwide, unfortunately the vast majority do not unless given a lot of extra tender loving care.
together, our six sales representatives have more than a century of experience with roses in their territories. For that reason, each has selected the roses which have proven to be the top performers for their region based on feedback from their customers as well as their own personal experience observing these in their own gardens and trial sites in their territories. These roses have shown year-after-year to be the best-in-class on the market for each
of them. They are winter hardy and will have the best disease resistance in the area for which they are recommended. Just like The Knock out Family of roses and Drift roses, they are sure to give your customers the satisfaction and enjoyment without needing any specific care except for a good pruning at the end of the winter/beginning of spring every year.
These regional roses have been carefully selected from our entire catalog. They truly are what each sales representative considers their best-of-the-best. While some varieties may appear across several regions, all selections bear our promise when it comes to selecting rose offerings for your own customers in your area of the country.

Apricot Drift
C reated in response to increased consumer demand for smaller, everblooming plants, Drift Roses fit a special niche in the landscape rose market.
Drift roses are a cross between full-size groundcover roses and miniatures. From the groundcover roses they kept toughness, disease resistance and winter hardiness. From the miniatures, they inherited a well-managed size and repeat-blooming nature.
The low, spreading habit of Drift roses is perfect for small gardens and combination planters. They complement any garden. They brighten up borders, fill in empty spaces, and spread delicately around established plants.
The series is comprised of seven varieties - apricot Drift, Coral Drift, Peach Drift, Pink Drift, Popcorn Drift, red Drift and Sweet Drift. Continuously blooming from spring to early frost, they are naturally dwarf with very attractive foliage.
apricot DriftApricot Drift exhibits a true groundcover habit. Double apricot colored flowers begin in spring and display a season-long show of color. It is just as tough and disease resistant as others in the Drift series. Best suited for small gardens or along paths and walkways..
