What is my role
• There are 4 roles that exist in any athletic contest…
1. Spectator2. Official3. Competitor4. Coach
Role as Parents/Spectators• Before– Goals/Expectations– Realize that participation is “their” thing– Release them to the game
RED Flags• Continue to take credit for their success (We)• Try to solve problems before they have problems• Continue to coach when they know more than we
do• Avoid you or are embarrassed after a game• You suffer with losses and celebrate more with wins
than they do• If your spouse or friends won’t sit with you• If you catch yourself yelling at a coach or official
during a game
• During– Focus on the Team– Allow them to focus on the coach – One
instructional voice– Model appropriate behavior…Poise and confidence– Be proud of them regardless of playing time or how
the game is going
• After– Tell your child you enjoyed watching them play– Give your athlete time and space– Don’t analyze their performance– Be proud of them regardless of playing time or
how the game ended
Parent-Coach Relationship

• Communication from the Parent1. Notification of schedule conflicts 2. Specific concerns with expectations3. Concerns are expressed directly to the coach4. Immediately following a game is generally not a
productive meeting time (24 Hour Rule)
