Named for Lt. Col. William Jennings Jr. (1771-1831)whose legendary campaigns against Tecumsehs Indian
Confederation included service under General AnthonyWayne at Fallen Timbers (1794) and General William Henry Harrison at Tippecanoe (1811), Fort Jenningsstands on the Auglaize River in Northwestern Ohio.
Carved from the Black Swamp, the town is built at the site of what was originally a military fort built by Lt.Col. Jennings, Jr. in the War of 1812. The fort itself wasdismantled by settlers after the war for timber to build cabins.
Settlers started moving to the area in the 1820s. Most settled along the Auglaize River. Cabins constructed when the early settlers arrived were poorly built and of-
fered little protection from the elements. After a saw millstarted operations in 1850, lumber was available for con-struction.
Henry Boehmer, born in Oldeberg, Germany, in 1807,came to the United States in 1833 and to Fort Jenningsin July 1834, where he died in 1868. He is the claimed
forefather of many current Fort Jennings residents.Fort Jennings celebrated its bicentennial in 2012 with
a three-day festival.
Memorial Hall in Fort Jennings has been reno-vated and now hosts community events and houseshistorical village items.

Fort Jennings Park lies along the Auglaize River and is home to many activities.
Upcoming improvements include new rest-room facilities. The playground equipment was replaced
in 2009 and in the 2011, the ball diamondsreceived a state-of-the-art clay-based pel-lets. The pellets were mixed with the existinginfield dirt and a small layer is also placed on top. The material keeps the surface looser,
prohibits weed growth and is more aestheti-
cally pleasing. The material has been used at the new ball
field at the University of Northwestern Ohioand Parkview Field in Fort Wayne. The diamonds are used by the high school
baseball and softball teams as well as littleleague, mens and womens softball.
The park is also home to tennis courts and a sheltherhouse.
Motor Madness Weekend in July and otherevents raise funds for park improvements.

Kalida was the first town platted in Putnam County and was named the seat of justice for the county.Kalida means beautiful. An 1834act of Ohio Legislature provided forthe organization of the county and the establishment of a county seat.
A frame court house was erected in 1834, but this was replaced bya brick building in 1839. Kalidaremained the county seat untilOctober 1866. At that time a coun-ty-wide vote selected Ottawa as thecounty seat.
A post office was established
very soon after the organizationof Kalida and according to thebest tradition, the first post road serving Kalida was The Defianceand Wapakoneta Road from Fort
Recovery to Defiance. In 1836 Guthrie & Sarber built a
grist mill on Hog Creek at Kalida, the second and, at that time, themost important water mill in thecounty.
The Kalida area drained intothe Ottawa River (Hog Creek). Theland was originally covered with
forests and was part of the Great
Black Swamp. After the land wascleared to develop agriculture, ditches and clay tiles were needed to aide in drainage of the soil tomake it suitable for farming. Manysmall tile mills were founded inthe area to provide the needed tile.Today the landscape of PutnamCounty includes hundreds of highly
productive farms. The first newspaper in the coun-
ty was the Kalida Venture edited by Francis Gillette. From the time
of the first issue, Feb. 20, 1841,Putnam County has not been with-out at least one newspaper. TheKalida Sentinel was established in1865.
Schools were important in thisnew community, so on Sept. 10,1836, the trustees divided the town-ship into two small school districtsand proceeded to open free schoolsthat year.
According to Judge Skinnershistory, the first settlers of UnionTownship were Abraham Sarberand John Guffey in 1831, followed in 1832 by George Clevenger and
Joseph Clevenger and in 1833 withan addition of seven families, viz,
Adam Sarber, Jacob Clevenger,Samuel Clevenger, Jenkin Hughes,William Clevenger, Samuel Ganderand Daniel Rimer.

14 Ottoville Profile
History ...Ottoville is a small town but for
those approaching from any direction,it announces itself by the twin Gothicsteeples of the church looming over thehorizon.
In 1845, the Miami and Erie Canalopened through this area of heavily for-ested swamp. Only then did immigrantsbegin to settle in the area. A year earlier,a Roman Catholic priest, Father JohnOtto Bredeick, had brought a group of German people to Section 10 on the canal
and established Delphos. When he found six Catholic families onSection Sixteen of the canal, he bought and platted ground and secured rights towater power of the canal to establish asawmill adjacent to Lock 27. This initi-ated a settlement between Locks 27 and 28 north of the Loramie Summit.
In 1848, he established a parish withthe Catholic families and in 1850, a two-story frame building 36 feet by 20 feet
was built near canal Lock 28, and thebuildings upstairs served as a church, while the lower floor was used as a shel-ter for the new arrivals until they could build their own cabins on land they pur-chased.
In 1848, the Ohio Legislature created Auglaize County, causing surroundingcounties to be cut in area. One tier of sections was added on the east side of the canal from Jackson Township to
these and the result became MontereyTownship. It was organized in 1850 and at the first election of officials, only 11votes were cast.
In 1852, the state established a post office for this area on the bank of the
Miami and Erie Canal. Today, this spot is 14774 Road 25M, about three milesnorth of town. In 1880, the settlement and the post office chose the nameOttoville in honor of the founder John
Otto Bredeick.
