By BRANT [email protected]
After a season that saw the Breckenridge Buckaroos fi nish 4-7 and make it to the Bi-Dis-trict round of the playoff s, the Buckaroos are ready to improve on that record in 2013.
Th e Buckaroos return 16 starters from that playoff team including senior quarterback Clay Boaz, running back Austin Dooley, wide re-ciever Caleb Spoon and off ensive line players Nick Bernal and Brady Noble.
Spoon led the Bucks’ receivers 29 catches for 625 yards.
Dooley is the Bucks’ leading rusher from 2012 with 389 yard on 64 attempts.
Th e Bucks’ defense returns nine starters, with several reserves seeing a good amount of action as well.
Dooley will be a force on the defensive side. He will anchor the defense from the inside-linebacker position. Dooley led the team with 156 tackles a year ago with 14 of those being tackles for a loss and six quarterback sacks.
Despite returning 16 starters, the Bucks will have a great deal of youth on the team.
Th e Bucks will look to a small class of seven seniors to step up into a leadership role and guide the team.
Th e Bucks will have a strong non-district schedule with Colorado City, Vernon, Sweet-water and Graham.
Th e team will start District 4-2A play on Sept. 27 at Comanche. Other district oppo-nents for the Bucks will include Clyde, East-land, Jim Ned, Merkel, and Dublin.
Th e Breckenridge Lady Bucks’ volleyball team is off to a strong start. Th e team has been really competitive in their matches that they have played.
Th e Lady Bucks were 28-11 overall in 2012 and advanced to the Regional quarterfi nals. Th e team returns fi ve players including Landre Griffi n, Hanna Singleton, Madi King, Madison Hatchett and Megan Herrington.
Herrington is a four-year varsity player who totaled 251 kills last season and was named District Blocker of the Year after racking up 48.5 blocks a year ago.
Singleton was named to the District 7-2A’s fi rst team with 691 assists.
King accounted for 151 digs in 2012 and was a fi rst team all district selection as well.
Hatchett was a second team all district se-lection after collecting 63 digs, 19 kills, 15 as-sists, and 9.5 blocks.
Griffi n led the team with 391 kills in 2012. She also collected 47.5 blocks, 176 digs, and 56 aces.
Th e Buckaroos will also benefi t from twin move-ins Carri and Cayli Yarbrough, who come to Breckenridge from Memphis. Th e Lady Bucks will play Hawley, Dublin and East-land in District 7-2A play.
