THE annual Bangtail Muster Parade wentoff with a bang on Monday with nearly 50groups participating in the procession.

The May Day celebration saw floatsdesigned by various groups including schoolchildren, volunteer groups, sports clubs, firefighters and, for the first time, the CentralAustralian Aboriginal Congress.

Four awards were given out on the day, including Best in the Parade, which waswon by Teppa Hill Pre-School.

The Best other Pre-School entry wasawarded to Gillen Pre-School, the GirlGuides won the Best Community entry, and the Best other entry went to Home

Hardware, who generously donated their

winnings straight back to the Rotary Clubof Alice Springs.

Bangtail Muster organiser DavidMortimer said this year’s parade was thebest they’d had for more than 30 years.

‘‘We’ve been working hard over the lastthree years to build it back up, so we werevery pleased with this year’s parade,’’ hesaid.

The origins of the parade can be tracedback when cattle were the main industry ofthe Centre, and the stockmen would cut theends of the tails to record how many cattlewere mustered.
