Prescription for Preventing Disaster
According to the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP), older patients are vulnerable to accidental poisonings when their medication regimien involves multiple medications prescribed by several physicians.
That possibility for error makes physician and patient communication vital.
To better increase communication, reduce errors, and take your medications as prescribed follow these simple recommendations:
Tell your doctor about all the medicines you are already taking. This includes prescription medicines and the medicines you buy without a prescription, such as aspirin, laxatives, vitamin supplements, and home remedies. It’s helpful to take along a written list.
Tell your doctor what is important to you about your medicines. You may want a medicine with fewest side effects, or fewest doses to take each day. If you have trouble swallowing, you may want a liquid form of medicine or you may care most about cost (there may be a generic drug or another lower-cost medicine you can take) .
Tell your doctor if you have any allergies to medications or if you have had any troubling side effects from medicines.
Tell your doctor if you have any illnesses or problems for which another doctor or health professional is treating you.
Tell your doctor if you are not taking your medicine as directed. For example, some people may stop taking their medicine, take a lower dose, or skip doses if they are having side effects. Your doctor needs to know about any changes in your treatment plan.
Following these simple steps will help ensure you are receiving the most appropriate and safest medication for your situation.
Patients are vulnerable to accidental poisonings when their medication regimien involves medications prescribed by several physicians.

Neighborhood Emergency Preparedness: What is it and why should we care?
Deborah Stinson , Community Preparedness Co-coordinator 20/20 Emergency Preparedness Action Group
Deborah Stinson’s career in information technology spanned more than thirty years in a variety of public, education and business settings. She managed complex computer networks as well as large and diverse groups of talented people. The broad systems perspective, interpersonal skills and persistence she developed over that career
became the basis of her contribution to many local volunteer efforts since arriving in Port Townsend in 2003. Deborah has led Local 20/20’s Emergency Preparedness Action Group since its inception in 2006 and initiated what has become an effective partnership with the Jefferson County Department of Emergency Management (DEM) to strengthen Community Preparedness. With the guidance of the DEM and the help of many dedicated volunteers, the Jefferson County network of identified neighborhood preparedness groups has grown from half a dozen to more than a hundred.

Menu for Our Healthy Future: Fresh, Local and Seasonal Food
Judith Alexander, MSW
Judith has been self-employed in a private counseling practice in Jefferson County for 30 years, where her particular passion involves bringing groups of people together for common purpose, creativity support, healing, learning about sustainable living, etc.
She has lived in Port Townsend for 33 years and particularly in the past decade has been inspired to grow most of the produce she eats
around her house in town, including membership in a neighborhood community garden. With 14 fruit trees, and her own raised garden beds exceeding 75’x40’, when combined with freezing, canning, and drying the foods she grows, Judith is able to feed herself year round fruits and vegetables. Through her volunteerism in Local 2020’s Food Resiliency Action Group, she has, with others, assisted the instigation of over 25 community gardens throughout Jefferson County, bringing many people who would not otherwise have access to the experience, to the wonders and empowerment of feeding themselves healthy, fresh, local, and seasonal food.

Recognizing Danger
You may not realize just how much you rely on hearing to keep yourself out of danger’s way. You hear the car often before you see it, giving you a few seconds notice that a car is coming around the curve as you prepare to pull out of your driveway.
At work, if you can’t hear the forklift moving down the aisle, you’re a walking target. It only beeps when it’s backing up, remember? A warning from a co-worker or your spouse, a shout-out from a neighbor or the floor manager, if you can’t hear these warnings you put yourself and others at a higher risk at home, at work and out and about in the community.
Hearing loss is a common problem, and a recent survey reveals the loss of hearing for
a loved one can cause stress for caregivers as well. In fact, eight of 10 caregivers surveyed expressed concern about hearing loss in the person for whom they care, and 86 percent of that group feels that a person’s inability to hear clearly can affect the daily care they receive.
The National Caregivers Survey of professional and family caregivers, released by Songbird Hearing, Inc., also found that one of four professional caregivers believes that a patient’s hearing loss may have led to medical misunderstandings and mistakes.
The survey also confirmed that it is often the caregiver who first notices a person’s hearing problem, citing signs such as needing people to repeat themselves, turning up the volume on the TV or radio, responding inappropriately to questions and avoiding social situations.
Despite these signs, 72 percent of those showing signs of hearing loss are not addressing the problem. Reasons these people chose not to wear a hearing aid included cost, discomfort, inconvenience and vanity.
If you suspect your loved one is having hearing difficulties or if you are noticing the signs of hearing loss yourself, you’ll
want to take advantage of the free hearing screenings being performed at the Wellness Fair by Costco and Peninsula Hearing. Do your part to protect yourself and your loved ones by taking this non-evasive screening.
For more about the study mentioned above, view www.nfcacares.org/caregiving_resources/hearingloss.cfm

The Therapeutic value of Music
Music brings delight to people of all ages and philosophies. In many cultures music is a central part of the curative ritual, lyrics and music combining to beckon beneficial spirits or expel malevolent ones. Songs were said to be the gift of an animal or spirit established by the medicine man in an apparition or dream according to folklore in some North American Indian tribes. According to the American Music Therapy Association, Inc. (AMTA) music is, in fact, valuable as a therapy. Music therapy can be used to effect positive changes in the psychological, physical, cognitive or social functioning.
Music has been studied and proven to alleviate anxiety, soothe restlessness, and distract from pain. Music is the bedfellow of delight and the therapeutic value of joy is immeasurable in the healing process.
In addition to emotional and cognitive benefits some physio-therapists have acknowledged the improved muscle strength and enhanced dexterity that result from playing an instrument, sometimes recommending schooling on a particular instrument as a form of exercise.
Because of the expansive wellness benefits provided by music, the Wellness and Safety Fair has invited Crossroads Music to provide an instrument petting zoo of sorts. If you’ve ever wanted to play the violin, strum the guitar or beat on the drums but never had the exposure now is your chance to give it a whirl.
If you want to learn more about the therapeutic values of music, visit the association’s website at www.musictherapy.org.

“I had a quick recovery, thanks to Life Care Center!”
Kathy Smith was admitted to Life Care Center of Port Townsend after falling at home and fracturing her back. She was admitted to Swedish Hospital where she was diagnosed with having suff ered a stroke, which most likely was the cause of her fall.
In Kathy’s words: “My experience at Life Care has been just marvelous. Everyone is so kind and wonderful to me. Anything I’ve
asked for they do their best to do it right away. I have done a lot of rehab on my arms and legs to get stronger and on my balance. I can now walk on my own using a walker. e therapists have made me realize how important it is for me to do my exercises and walk, especially after I go home. If you have to go to rehab I defi nitely recommend Life Care Center of Port Townsend for everyone! I’m just amazed at the good care and great people working there.”

Have you ever had a massage by a professional masseuse?
Massage therapy has a primary benefit of being non-invasive and drug-free. Based on the body’s natural healing processes massage benefits not only different types of health conditions but also works on multiple levels simultaneously; benefits are physical, mental and emotional.
Massage also increases the release of endorphins, the body’s natural painkiller. Because of this, massage therapy is being incorporated into more humanistic treatments of chronic illness. It also assists in relieving muscle spasms and tension-related headaches.
Mental benefits of massage include relaxed state of mental awareness, capacity for creativity and calm thinking, ability to monitor stress signals and respond appropriately, increased ability for clearer thinking, and reduction of mental stress. Massage also greatly benefits the ability to concentrate for longer periods of time.
Massage fosters a feeling of well-being, creates body awareness, reduces levels of anxiety, and increases awareness of the mind-body connection. Emotional benefits also include an enhanced, positive self-image, and a feeling of increased energy flow.
According to the American Massage Therapy Association the therapeutic benefits of massage continue to be researched and studied. Recent research has shown the effectiveness of massage for the following
conditions:Cancer-related fatigueLow back painOsteoarthritis of the kneeReducing post-operative painBoosting the body’s immune
system functioningDecreasing the symptoms of
