In 1911 the first athletic and soccer sta-dium was built in Cluj, near the Central Park and close to the river. A wooden tribune gave shelter to the spectators. After 50 years, in 1961, a new con-crete stadium was built replacing the old one. It had a horse shoe shape, and it received after some time the name of a famous Romanian athlete. After another 50 years, following more than a decade of debates and proposals, the new Cluj Arena was built and opened to the pub-lic in 2011.The most important conceptual element of this project is the transparency al-lowing visual connections between the outside context and the indoor pool of activities. It also works vice-versa through the visual permeability of the facades which allows the sights to escape and to keep the public connected to the park and the hills.

Biasini Residence
The project having been tried for the first time by an association of several owners for a mixed and coherent development is in the central area situated on retro-ceded lands in the yard of former Biasini inn. The first version was broader and it included a hotel and a public parking space, but it was a abandoned due to terrain restriction. The solution that is be-ing built was negotiated with the heritage defenders so that the yard would gain an optimal proportion and the space would enclose around a square that becomes the social life center. The dynamic and articulation of volumes takes the cornice of the historical building and the over-write with volumes that replicate the attic in a complete detached way from the normal roofs with slopes. From the upper stores one can discover targeted views towards the center church towers.

Redesign of a centralurban area
The project is a proposal for the mod-ernisation of a sucsession of central ur-ban areas in Zalau, a city in the north of Romania. The interventions suggest em-phasizing the different characteristics of each space and strengthening the links between them, physically and visually. Clean lines of design create a unified image of the spaces and harmonize the historical elements with the modern archi-tecture and the existing vegetation.

Sports park The project is a proposal for a multi-purpose sports park for all sea-sons, days of the week and times of day. Combine walking and pub-lic park with swimming pool and landscaped sports field. Jogging to climb over the stands and the locker volumes enable joggers have a look at the whole complex, not to inter-sect with other users. Summer eve-nings will turn the pool into a club, and winters will host an ice ring in the fitness area.

Mixed use project The concept of this development starts from the simultaneously meet-ing of functional and density re-quirements - specified by the urban planning indicators – and a morpho-logical configuration based upon connecting the offices area with the public space. Meanwhile, the hous-ing area is organized around a pri-vate interior garden. The withdraw-ing steps morphology has a double purpose: bringing natural light for the South and West facades – with the most favorable orientation – and visually connecting the housing area with the Cluj city center shape, with which it establishes a direct liaison.

Mixed use project The concept of the area development proposed two different spaces: the office buildings and their inner core, the residential and services spaces. The semi-private spaces and func-tions needed to be protected from the city’s effervescent life, yet allow-ing clear views and ways of interac-tion. Office buildings became an in-terface, the modern ‘protective wall’. Their high towers mark clearly our presence there, and generate the feeling that this community is sustain-able, it is safe and efficient and has its own power of development. The whole compound consists of a volumetric alternation of prisms, for optimal natural lighting. The accessible rooftops and terraces are treated as gardens, as a state-ment for a green approach over a former industrial plant.

Librarium Bookstore
This is a temporary solution for a holiday book fair so designed as to continue with a long-term op-tion for the entire space, which continues in the basement. The fi-nal solution textures takes original elements that decorate the ground floor of the palace which is the most famous library in Cluj, the ground zero of books in the city. The use of boxes suggests both temporality and spatial dynamics.

a Kitchen for the Paint-Brush Factory
The Cluj PaintBrush Factory is centre for contemporary art, which is put up and managed by a federation of artists and organizations. In 2011, a collegue and I were commisioned to start work on a project to rehabili-tate the central lobby of the building. The project was finalized in 2012.The natural, non-invasive interven-tions contributed to giving a new drive and function to the space, ac-cording to the building’s specificity. The genius locus was sought for be-neath cement plastering and layers of paint but also invoked by the new industrial flooring cast to replace the uneven and worn-out cement screed. An open kitchen replaced the former residual space and together with a dining area and a bookcase, ren-ders a homey touch to this new lab for communal assembly.

Multifunctional hall reconversionfor Tudor Jarda School of Folk Arts
In 2012 I collabrorated with a team of young architects in devel-oping the concept for the reconver-sion of an old exhibition pavillion belonging to Tudor Jarda School of Folk Arts. Our project had to provide a solu-tion that met the clients budget and their need for a flexible, multifunc-tional space. We reinterpreted traditional roma-nian folk motifs and designed a custom perforated wooden wall. This was the most visible of our interventions. For the rest of the building we decided to remove all the unnecessary elements to reveal the original brick walls and ce-ment ceiling. Most of the materials we removed were reused for the new project but they were given a different destination.

4/5 visual identities
02
After graduating the Faculty of Ar-chitecture in Cluj-Napoca I worked for five years at DicosiTiganas, a design office based in Cluj. For the last two and a half years there I started working more and more in PR and graphic design. I felt that the company needed a new public image as well as an internal restructuring and I started implementing a new strategy in small steps. A milestone in that pro-cess was the launch a new web-site, that I designed the interface for. The final stage was the official launch of the new visual identity that I had designed. The package consisted of all the graphical ele-ments I felt were needed to insure that the company projects a coher-ent visual message, that reflects the companys’ phylosophy.

In addition to that, the instructions for the use of those elements were gathered in manual.I found the project to be a very chal-lenging one, especially because my clients were also my employers. But knowing the internal mechanisms of the company helped me to better understand their needs in order to create an efficient strategy. The goal was never to create some-thing spectacular but more on the functional side, something that works, is easily implemented and adopted by the company and also by their collaborators.Previously the company had under-gone a series of transformations as far as the image goes but never such a drastic one, on so many levels.I believe that the experience was a pos-itive one, that benefited both parties.

Projekt Arte Projekt Arte is a start-up aiming to raise funds for cultural events in a small city in Romania.Designing a visual identity for them was a fun and interesting experi-ence. The process started off by designing a clean, easy to navigate website that could help them reach potential sponsors and volunteers.Having that in mind, two logos were created - a main logo that repre-sents the brand and a secondary logo, extracted from the main logo, that represents the sponsor and was designed to emphasize the impor-tance of social participation in the project.

This review was designed to re-member the year 2012, as it was lived by the office Dico and Ti-ganas through trials and proposals for competitions, to almost final-ized or handover buildings. My work on this project consisted in developing the concept for the publication, overviewing the edito-rial design, copyright and transla-tion of the texts. The main purpose of the brochure was to establish a more direct line of communication with the public, allowing the office to tell the story of each project as it was lived and seen through the eyes of the archi-tects.

Architravel is a non profit student organization founded in 2009 and currently based in Cluj-Napoca.Part of their plan for 2012 was to establish partnerships with different institutions and private companies in order to receive financing and technical support for their projects. In order to achieve that goal they requiered a booklet they could use like an extended business card to present to their future partners. My work was to design and over-view the execution of the booklet. As a result they concluded by the end of 2012 partnerships with the Faculty of Architecture and Urban Planning in Cluj-Napoca, the Tech-nical university of Cluj and several advertising and printing companies that offered to promote their projects pro bono.

Considering the succes of the year-ly reviews, DicosiTiganas decided to dedicate a special publication to the summer internship workshop organized by the office in 2013. I was personally in charge of con-ducting the workshop so naturally the task of drafting this brochure was an easy one. The workshop had an unusual for-mat, three mandatory weeks and one week when the presence was optional. For that period of time 29 students from four faculties of architecture helped us organize an exhibition-party to celebrate the launch of the companies’ new website. They also made a re-search study that was used for the documentation to promote Cluj-Napoca as European Capital of Youth in 2015.

Luciri optzeciste is a Cluj based musical project, founded in 2012. For two years now they have pro-moted RomPop music (80s’ roma-nian music) with glamourous par-ties. I am proud to have designed their logo and posters for their events.

Bànffy is a board game designed for Chopin unplugged - an event ment to attract visitors to Bànffy cas-tle. The architectonic baroque monu-ment, located in village in the vecin-ity of Cluj-Napoca is offen dubbed as the Transylvanian Versailles. The castle is documentarily attested from the beginning of the fourteenth cen-tury. By the end of the 20th centry the building has suffered numerous transformations and two devastat-ing fires. In 1990 it was declared a historical monument and in 1999 began the works for the restoration and rehabilitation of the monument, with the support of several Roma-nian and foreign institutions under the patronage of Prince Charles of Wales. Nowadays, the castle is a host for Electric Castle Festival, the largest music festival in Romania.

The game was designed as a fun way to help visitors learn more about the history of the castle. The experience of playing the game was a very personal one for each of the players and the effect was an unexpected one. After Chopin unplugged we received more and more demands from people who wanted to purchase the game so we, the A1 collective, decided to produce a limited edition of 20 sets. Three of the sets were offered as a gift to Transylvania Trust, the keepers of the castle. All the sets were handcrafted with the help of a carpenter.

The game is packed in a wood-ebox and it contains*:
- 1 board- 32 game cards- 40 red wooden cubes - 32 grey wooden cubes - 21 wooden roofs- 9 grey wooden cylinders- 1 wooden cylinder- 6 pawns- 2 dices- 3 linen bags- a set of instructions
* All the pieces are handmade.

Between may and june 2011 Protokoll Studio makes a program called People’s School of Contemporary Art. At the same time GLOC brings into discussion the un-solved situation of the people evicted from Coastei Street in Cluj, on the Christmas of 2010 and relocated in an area near the citys biggest garbage dump site.State and ideas, which lead to the mak-ing of the “game” “You are in Pata Rât”, starting from the abnormality of the situation in which these people are placed and the prospect of normality and insensitivity that authorities adopt. The object proposes a situation through which this package of information is deliv-ered in a friendly way. The object does not impose itself on the participants but invites them to play. The game is similar to a game of logic and even if it’s accompanied by a text, this is just informative for presenting the context.

In 2012 SPAM launched a first call for proposals of contemporary art in public spaces. The location was set in Carol Park in Bucharest and the theme was Copy/Paste. At the moment there were two iden-tical socles built for the display of Con-stantin Istrates statue in Carol Park. One of them was built in 1906 - which was to host the SPAM projects - and its copy, built in 2009, on which the statue was moved. QUB was one of the five selected works out of more than 50 proposals submitted. The name is given by the shape of the ob-ject - cube and the QR codes “carved” on four sides that reveal the virtual representa-tion of Dr. Istrate. By scanning the codes one can access a virtual gallery of images - the code on each side is a link to a pic-ture of the statue previously placed there. The object emphasizes the duality of the socles. The idea of copy/paste is inter-preted as a way of communication be-tween the real and the virtual environment.

Glimpse is a video installation de-signed for the 2012 Street Deliv-ery festival in Timisoara. The project consisted of creating a real-time visual link between Cluj-Napoca and Timisoara, two cities in Romania we are very fond of. A screen with a projector and a video camera were placed in cen-tral locations in each city and sent a live feed for three days.

The installation “Fugue in a mi-nor step” was composed of 500 bells made of porcelain and clay and suspended by the structure of the Elizabeth Bridge in Cluj. The bridge was built in 1901 and is presently used as a pedestrian connection between the Central Park and the Bellevue promenade. The work was part of the “Visible City 2012” and was intended to be an opportunity for passers to escape the present and reconnect to a place of passage in a playful way.

Prose on display is a curatorial project that aims to give more exposure to young romanian writers. We participated with this project to an art festival in 2012 and received financ-ing to publish the first text. The second text was published only a year later and the project was financed by crowdfund-ing.The location chosed to display the prose was an old grocery store situated in the central square of Cluj-Napoca. The store has been deserted for more than ten years an the display window had been used as a notice board. Since the publication of the first text more and more passers noticed the change and most of them found the time and curi-osity to read it. For the second text some people interacted with the text by scratch-ing down parts they did not approve.
