Ourname,KIPPNYCCollegePrep,signifiesoneofourprimaryobjectivesasaschooltodevelopthe
academicandcharacterskillsnecessarytoattainacollegedegree. Currentlythemajorityofteenagers
fromNewYorkCityneverattendcollege,andmanyoftheNYCstudentswhodostartcollegenever
finish. BynamingourschoolKIPPNYCCollegePrep,werefusetoacceptthatmostNewYorkCity
studentsarenotpreparedtostartandfinishcollege.OurbeliefisthateveryKIPPstercanearnacollege
degree,which
is
the
key
to
being
self
sufficient,
successful,
and
happy
in
our
competitive
world.

goalistohaveourstudentsgoandgraduatefromcollege.
OurCrest
Theschoolcrestwillstandasthevisualrepresentationofourvaluesand

KIPPNYCCollegePreprecognizesthateachindividualstudentmayhaveuniquechallengesfacingthem
inandoutoftheclassroom.Becausewestrivetofindsolutionsforallofourstudents,avarietyof
disciplinaryandsupportiveprogramsmaybeputinplace.Thesearenotlimitedto,butmayinclude:
ProgressReport Aplanwherestudentshaveaprogressreporttargetingspecificbehaviorsand/or
academicsupportthateachteacherfillsoutandtheparentssign.

AcademicSupportProgram
KIPPNYCCollegePrepiscommittedtoprovidingeveryopportunityforstudentstosucceedacademically
andtodeveloptheskillsnecessaryforhighereducation. Inadditiontoinformalteacheravailability,
additionalacademic
resources
including
tutors
will
be
available
to
all
students
through
the
Academic
SupportProgrambefore,during,andafterschoolhoursintheAcademicSupportCenter. Studentsmay
receive1:1teacherorpeertutoringaswellasstudyinginsmallgroupsinallcurriculumareas. Students
willhaveaccesstotextbooks,laptopcomputers,printers,andtheinternetforacademicresearch
purposesonly.
InadditiontheAcademicSupportProgramwillrunsemesteroryearlongcoursesforstudentswhohave
metwithacademicchallengesduring8thgrade. Studentswhoscoredbelowa75ontheNYState
IntegratedAlgebraRegentswillberequiredtotaketheIntegratedAlgebraduringtheirfreshmanyear
(9thgrade),andadditionalsupportandtestpreparationwillbeavailableforallRegentsclasses. A
ReadingandWritingSupportClasswillbeofferedforthosestudentswhoneedadditionalhelpinthis
area. SATpreparationclasseswillalsobeavailabletoallstudentsduringtheirjunioryear(11thgrade).

AcademicIntervention
AstudentisplacedonAcademicInterventionifhis/hergradepointaverage(GPA)fallsbelowaC(2.0,
seegradingpolicy)forallthecoreacademiccourseswhichincludeEnglish,History,Math,Science,
Spanish,andSpeechandCompositionORifastudentisfailingoneormorecoursesduringamarking
period.WhenastudentisplacedonAcademicIntervention,aparentmeetingwillbesetupwiththe
DeanofAcademics,advisor,andselectedteacherstodraftaplanandcontracttoimproveastudents
academicperformance.Heorshewillbemandatedtotakecertainstepswhichmayincludesomeorall
ofthefollowing:

AcademicProbation
IfastudentonAcademicInterventioncontinuestostruggleacademicallyforonefullquarter(two
markingperiods),thenheorshewillbeplacedonAcademicProbation.Thisactionservesasastrong
warningthatastudentsworkisunsatisfactory,andfurthermeasuresmaybetakenincludingafollow

KIPPNYCCollegePrepunderstandsthatstudentsmayexperiencepersonal,social,orfamilyissuesthat

We

made
astrong
commitment

meet

Advisories
StudentswillbematchedupwithafacultymemberinanAdvisoryof1012students. Advisorswillmeet
withtheiradviseesin1:1andsmallgroupsettingstwotimesperweek. AsstudentsmovethroughKIPP
NYCCollege
Prep,
it
is
important
that
we
continue
to
provide
support
and
asmall
school
atmosphere
to
ourstudentsandfamilies. Onewaytokeepthisfeelingaswegrowtoserveover700studentsis
throughouradvisoryprogram. TheAdvisorywillstaytogetheroverallfouryearsofhighschool.

Houses
Tofosterasenseofcommunityandschoolspirit,advisorieswillmeettogetherindistinctgroupsthat
willformlargergroupscalledhouses.Inourfoundingyear,fouradvisorieswillmakeuponehouse. In
futureyears,eachhousewilladdgradesandeventuallywewillbegintohavehousesthatcontain
advisoriesfromeverygradelevel.
Thisyear,therewillbefourHouseseachwith4050students. Infouryears,whentherearefreshmen
through
seniors
in
our
school,
each
House
will
consist
of
16
advisories
with
about
200
students
across
all
fourgrades.
TheHouseswillallowustocreatesmallercommunitiestokeepasmallschoolfeelingatKIPPNYC
CollegePrep. Inaddition,eachHousewillparticipateinacademicandcharacterbuildingprogramssuch
ascommunityserviceprojectsandlocalandlongdistancetrips. Housesalsowillcompeteagainsteach
otherinactivitiessuchcommunityservice,fundraising,academics,schoolspiritandphysicalactivities.In
additiontocreatingasenseofschoolspirit,theHouseswillprovideanopportunityforstudentstobuild
relationshipsacrossgradesandsectionsoftheschool.

ExtracurricularActivitiesandSportsTeams
Studentsarehighlyencouragedtotakeadvantageofasmanyextracurricularopportunitiesaspossible
whileatKIPPNYCCollegePrep,bothtobecomemorewellroundedindividualsandtoensurethatthey
arecompetitiveapplicantsforhighereducation.KIPPNYCCollegePrepprovidestheopportunityforall
studentsto
participate
and
excel
in
adiverse
selection
of
extracurricular
activities
and
sports.
While
participatingandrepresentingourschool,studentsareexpectedtoabidebyschoolexpectations.Every
studentiswelcometoparticipateintheseactivities,solongastheymaintaingoodacademicand

RequirementsforParticipationinExtracurricularActivitiesandSportsTeams:
Academic
StudentsmustmaintainaCaverage(2.0orabove)inordertoparticipateinanyextracurricularactivities
andcompetitivesportsteams. Allstudentswillbewelcometoparticipateinactivitiesandsportsof
theirchoice
during
the
first
nine
weeks
of
school.
During
that
time
students
in
good
academic
standing
willbeallowedtocontinuewiththeirchosenactivities.
StudentswhoseGPAshavefallenbelowaC(2.0)averageorfailedoneormorecourseswillnotbe
allowedtocontinueparticipatingintheirKIPPBlockactivityorsportsteam. Studentswillberequiredto
attendastudyhallortutorialduringtheKIPPblockfrom4:00PMto5:00PMonMondays,Tuesdays,

Studentsmayparticipateintheirdailyextracurricularactivityonlyiftheyarrivedtoschoolontimeor
haveanexcusedlatenessorabsenceforapreviousday.
StudentswhohavedemonstrateddifficultyinmaintainingthehighcharacterstandardsofKIPPNYC
CollegePrepinanyclassoractivitymayalsohaveextracurricularprivilegesremoved.Allteachersand
facilitatorswillcommunicateanyissuestotheDeanofStudentsaswellasappropriateextracurricular
facilitatorsorcoaches.Dependingontheoffense,consequencescouldinclude:

CodeofConductduringMajorEventsandCompetitions:
Throughoutthecourseoftheyear,mostextracurricularactivitiesandsportswillholdmajoreventsand
competitions.SomeoftheseeventswilloccuronKIPPNYCCollegePrepscampus,whileotherswill
occuroffsite.Regardlessofthelocation,undertheleadershipandguidanceoffacultyadvisor,students
shouldbecognizantofthefactthattheyarerepresentativesofKIPPNYCCollegePrep,and
consequently,they
should
adhere
to
the
following
code
of
conduct:
StudentswillwearprofessionaldresswithaKIPPlogobuttondownshirtonthedayofthe
majoreventorcompetition.
StudentsmustabidebyalloftheregulationsofKIPPNYCCollegePrep,aswellasthoseof
anycampusorinstitutionwhichtheyhappentobevisiting.
ShouldastudentsbehaviorfalloutoflinewithKIPPNYCCollegePrepsexpectationswhile
offsite,thefollowingconsequencescouldoccur:
o Studentwillnolongerbeallowedtoparticipateinanyoffsiteactivitiesor
competitionsfortheirextracurricularactivity.
o Studentwillnotbeallowedtoparticipateinanymajoreventsorcompetitionsfor

Sportsmanship
KIPPNYCCollegePrepstudentathleteswillbeexpectedtobegoodsportsatalltimes. Wewilltreatour
opponentswithrespect,winorlose. KIPPStudentathleteswillnotuseprofanity,tauntorintentionally
harmtheiropponents. Wewillplaybytherules,andintheeventofalosswewillcongratulatethe
winner.Wewillplayfortheloveofthegame,nottheresult.
