he original scope of work for planned renovation

of a Church building, constructed in the early

1960’s, included removal and replacement of the

Narthex, or vestibule, floor slab damaged by settlement of

up to five feet of underlying, very loose fill material.

Hayward Baker worked with project architect Stanley

Love-Stanley; engineer Harrington, George, and Dunn;

and church leaders, to develop a ground improvement pro-

gram that would be effective in densifying the soils while

creating the minimum disturbance to scheduled Church

activities.

The compaction grouting program preceded the over-

all renovation program. Compact, maneuverable drilling/

driving equipment allowed easy access to the work area

within the Church building. On-site batching avoided the

need for a ready-mixed grout supply, an important consid-

eration in this residential area.

Grouting was performed on five-foot centers, through

access holes drilled in the floor slab, down to residuum at

15 feet below grade. Low slump grout was pumped in one

foot stages up to the underside of the slab. The controlled

grouting operation was effective in densifying the loose

soils and also raising and re-leveling the slab. This elimi-

nated the cost of replacement, some 30 percent of the

overall contract value.

Work was accomplished in just one week, allowing

structural restoration and remodeling to proceed as

planned.

large, stone pool deck had settled up to three

inches, causing structural distress. The settlement

was attributed to a one to four-foot thick layer of

organic fill that extended beneath the entire deck and pool

area. In cooperation with structural engineer Stanley D.

Lindsey and the GeoSciences Design Group, Hayward

Baker developed a compaction grouting program to

improve the soils prior to a planned remodeling program.

Subsurface conditions consisted of five to ten feet of

gravel fill overlaying the organic layer. Beneath this was a

five-foot thick clay layer, with bedrock encountered at

approximately 20 feet. Low slump compaction grouting

was performed on a five-foot square grid across the entire

deck and pool area, taking advantage of the existing, com-

pact gravel layer, placed at the time of original deck and

pool construction, to bridge between grout locations.

Treatment extended through the overburden soils to compe-

tent bearing material at a depth of 18 to 20 feet below deck

grade. Each grout location was reinforced with a #8, grade

60 bar, extending from the bottom of the treatment zone,

through the compressible layer and terminating within three

feet of grade. The reinforced grout ‘columns’ thus formed

act as axial compression, pile-type elements.

The compaction grouting program was effective in

bridging the organic fill layer and reinforcing the soil pro-

file to provide adequate bearing capacity and reduce future

settlement potential.
