According to a recent surveycarried out by BishopAuckland MP, HelenGoodman, anti-socialbehaviour is the biggestconcern for residents of thetown.Residents in Bishop tookpart in the survey, as well asthose in Shildon,Spennymoor and Teesdale. It was discovered that peoplewere mostly concerned aboutburglaries, road safety andalcohol-related crime.Helen commented, “I wasvery pleased with the levelof public response to thissurvey. I recently went onnight patrol with police andit was really interesting tosee the type of crimes thatour police deal with everyday.“Police numbers in Durhamare up more than 120officers since 1997, and it isno coincidence that crimehas fallen across the countyand in my constituency inthe last year.“I know, however, that anti-social behaviour is still a realproblem that affects
communitites across theconstituency, and I ampleased that Durham Policeare using the powers givento them by the Governmentto provide local communitypolicing, particularlythrough programmes such asStreetSafe where officerswork alongside the localcouncil, street wardens andthe emergency services toidentify and improve anti-social behavious ‘hotspots’.“While on patrol with thelocal police, I was shockedby the level of alcohol-related crime and I am notsurprised that the survey alsoreflects public concern aboutthis. I know Durham Policehave introduced initiatives totarget under-age drinkingand drinking in public, andthese have had some success, but this is a deep-seatedproblem that is mirroredacross the country.”Helen has also lobbiedDurham County Council toreduce speed limits andprovide pedestrian crossings, especially on St Andrew’sRoad.
CRIME IS RESIDENTS’BIGGEST WORRY
MP for Bishop Auckland,Helen Goodman, has spokenof the recent expensescandal concerning Cabinetmembers, dismissing it as‘absurd.’In a recent interview, Helensaid, “This is just ridiculous,to claim this is some kind ofscandal, just absurd.“People surely don’t expectthe Prime Minister to work80 hours as the PrimeMinister and then expect himto clean his own house. Thatis just ridiculous.”She went on to say, “It justseems very odd to me. Insome countries there is realpolitical corruption. Thereis no real political corruptionin this country.”
