FOCUS ON WORSHIP
WORSHIP DURING THE SEASON OF EASTER: Easter is the celebration of the Resurrection of Christ,
the “queen of feasts,” of the Church year. Easter celebrates an event so great that it cannot be limited to one
day. Thus, Easter consists of fifty days--a “week of weeks.” Beginning with the Vigil of Easter and
continuing through-out the Easter season, up to Pentecost Sunday. The candelabras are lit; and the lighted
Paschal Candle is appropriately placed near the Gospel side of the altar.
The theme of the season is the Resurrection of Christ, looking towards Christ’s Restoration to His Heavenly
Glory. The resurrection of Jesus, which Easter celebrates, is a foundation of the Christian faith. – The
resurrection established Jesus as the Son of God and is cited as proof that God will judge the world in
righteousness. God has given Christians "a new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus
Christ from the dead". Christians, through faith in the working of God are spiritually resurrected with Jesus
so that they may walk in a new way of life.
PASCHAL CANDLE: The Paschal candle is placed in the chancel and lighted for each liturgy during the
fifty days of Easter. At times other than the Easter season, the Paschal candle is kept in its stand near the
baptismal font as a visual reminder of the connection between Baptism and Easter. It is lighted for each
celebration of Baptism.

A MESSAGE FROM
PASTOR FRED
April Easter
Yep, I am getting old. Nevertheless, this time of the year always belies my
actual age I become much younger living in the convergence of Spring and
Easter. Once in a while I find a hymn where the text speaks to who I am and
who everyone is who celebrate the Jesus's resurrection. And so I give you the
words to hymn #447 - O Blessed Spring.
O blessed spring where word and sign embrace us into Christ the vine.
Here Christ enjoins each one to be a branch of this life giving tree. Through summer heat of youthful years uncertain faith, rebellious tears Sustained by Christ's infusing rain, the boughs will shout for joy again. When autumn cools and youth is cold, when limbs their heavy harvest hold, Then through us, warm, the Christ will move with gifts of beauty, love. As winter comes as winter must, we breath our last, return to dust; Still held in Christ, our souls take wing and trust the promise of the spring. Christ holy Vine, Christ living tree, be praised for this blessed mystery, That word and water thus revive and join us to your tree of Life.
Christ is risen, He is risen indeed!
Peace,
Pastor Fred

FREE MUSIC CAMP
July 16 – 20, 2018 at St. Luke’s!
Last July we held our first Summer Music Camp. Twenty-one youth from kindergarten to eighth grade attended the five-day camp. This year we will be holding our 2nd Annual FREE Summer Music Camp for children in grades K – 8 from July 16 – 20. During those days we will rehearse from 9 – 3 each day and then present “Once Upon a Parable” a biblical-based musical on Friday, July 20th at 6:30 pm. “Once Upon a Parable” is a 45 minute musical which features stories of Jesus such as: the wise man and the foolish man, the good Samaritan, the mustard seed, the parable of the vineyard, and the prodigal son, which is the centerpiece of the musical. Campers and volunteers may register for the camp at: https://goo.gl/forms/eNlxCJqd8luJRr3C3 Mark your calendars: IMANI MILELE Children’s Choir from Uganda
Thursday, July 12, 2018 at 7:00 pm Imani Milele is a team of passionate and determined individuals dedicated to working with Uganda's orphaned and many underprivileged children, enabling them to reach their full potential. Currently serving over 3000 children in Uganda, with the help of groups and individuals like you, we're forming a strong and passionate team helping to make a difference, one child at a time.
Hospitality is needed: 18 children in the choir and 8 chaperones need housing and breakfast for two nights (July 11 & 12.) Each house would need to house 2 – 3 children and 1 chaperone. Concerts and Recitals: St. Luke’s sanctuary serves as a wonderful recital hall for many musical concerts throughout the year. Check out the schedule of concert and recitals which Tammy Hammond dutifully updates regularly.

Shrove Tuesday & SNLFE events
The first photo is from our Shrove Tuesday Program which was on Feb 13,
at 5:30pm. The next five pictures are from our SNLFE (Sunday Night Lenten
Fellowship Event) which was on March 11, 2018 at 5:00pm. Both of these
events featured our Youth and our Lenten Challenge
Project to raise money for water filters for Puerto Rico. The characters
portrayed were “Water Man” and “Squirt”. We have a great group of kids
here at St. Luke. In September they brainstormed as to what could be their
Lenten Challenge. After the Puerto Rico Hurricane, our kids read about the
lack of clean drinking water there and the need for water filters. They
decided this could be their Lenten Challenge. They started selling baked
goods, coffee and lemonade every Sunday after Sunday School and Worship.
They met their goal the SNFLE dinner. They raised $5,000 for the purchase
of 302 Sawyer bucket water filters for Puerto Rico! Way to go St. Luke!

Flower Dedications
The Ministry of flowers is an important part of the Sunday
Service at St. Luke Lutheran. Flowers are used to beautify
our sanctuary and are a gift to God and those who attend
Worship services.
Altar flowers may be dedicated to “The Glory of God”, “In
Memory of” a loved one or “In Honor of” a special person,
an anniversary, birthday, birth, baptism or other special
event. More than one person may find a certain date important so flowers
may be given in more than one name on any given Sunday.
If you would like to donate and dedicate flowers for any Sunday service,
arrangements cost $27.00 each. You will be billed directly from Coleman
Brothers Flowers and the flowers will be delivered to the church. The flowers
are yours to take home after the service that Sunday or you can ask that they
be taken to one of our ill or homebound members. Please return the container
the flowers are in to the church at your convenience.
You may sign up on the flower chart that is located in the fellowship hall.
Please contact Tammy in the church office or Jean Stewart if you have any
questions. Thank you.
The 2018 Flower Chart
The 2018 Flower Calendar is now up in the fellowship hall. To those of you who give flowers every year during the same time frame, thank you. If you’re new to St. Luke or haven’t signed up yet to provide Sunday altar flowers, won’t you consider doing so?
Flowers can be planned for a date on or near your special date, to occur yearly.
Flowers may be given in more than one name on any given Sunday. If your date seems to be taken, please sign up anyway or call the church office to do so. If you would like more information about our Flower Calendar or if you have any questions about Altar Flowers, please contact Tammy in the church office at 804-272-0486 or [email protected]. You can also contact Jean Stewart, our sacristan, at 804-276-2690. Thank you.

Our Adult Forum for the next several Sundays will be “The Story of Heaven”. This is a DVD bible study
where Max Lucado and Randy Frazee will open our eyes to what is beyond the glorious finale of God’s
masterfully told story of life here on earth. They offer an awe-inspiring peek into the hope and promise of
eternal life. We will learn, discuss and apply biblical teaching about heaven to our everyday lives.

Mid-week Bible Study Class Pastor Fred’s Mid-week Bible Study Class is every Wednesday morning from 10:30am to 11:30am. Please consider joining us for a weekly discussion on scripture. Pastor Fred uses a variety of study methods as we delve into the text of the bible. You don’t even need to bring a Bible if you don’t want to, we have plenty at church. Pastor Fred invites you to come and discover new insights into the Bible.
