FOREWORD
The present issue of the Alumni Directory of the Graduates ofthe University of British Columbia is an attempt to give as nearlyas possible a correct statement of the names, degrees, addresses andoccupations of the members, now numbering 750.
Last September, when I undertook to publish the followinginformation early in 1925, I did not realize what a great undertakingit would be. However, through the kindness of Mr. Mathews, ourRegistrar, I was given access to the Convocation roll and other docu-ments which enabled me to find the correct spelling of most of thenames.
From last year's Directory the addresses of all graduates priorPo 1924 were obtained and the opportunity was taken when MissCarruthers was mailing the bulletins of enclosing a questionnaireasking for the permanent address, present address, further degrees, present occupation and omissions or mistakes noted in the last Direc-tory. A line was left vacant for suggestions as to how the AlumniAssociation can better serve each member.
As the returns were very slow I soon realized that this was duelargely to insufficient knowledge of the addresses. I then made use ofthe telephone directories of the various cities and corrected many ofthese addresses. Through other sources I have tried to reach asmany as possible of the missing Alumni and have succeeded exceptfor about half a dozen.
A few suggestions from various sources have been incorporatedin this issue. Instead of classifying the Alumni as Arts, Science orlAgriculture' such and such a year, owing to the fact that some mem-bers of the more recent years have had their degrees conferred at ,
some other time than the rest of the class, due to various causes, theyear of graduation has been given instead. This conforms with theConvocation roll, which is the source of information when inquiry ismade of a Graduate's standing through the Registrar.
In the last few years many of the Graduates from our Alm0Mater have gone to other institutions for postgraduate study and inmany cases they did not return to British Columbia, so that littlewas known about the results of their studies. I have had some trouble
Page One
in getting what information I have acquired but as may be seen bya very casual glance through the following pages, most of ourGraduates have done very creditable work indeed.
The Master's degrees have been given of those who took theM.A., M.A.Sc., or M.S.A. here since the University began in 1916.The major and minor subjects only are given, except in such caseswhere the degree was granted to Graduates of other institutions, thenthe address and occupation is given. In all other cases the year offirst graduation is given. This to avoid duplication in the compilingof statistics. In this connection, and for the same reason, there areabout six Graduates who have taken a second Bachelor's degree. These have been listed only in the case of the second degree.
As it is very hard to get all the information regarding each grad-uate up to date, I would consider it a personal favor if, upon readingthis Directory through, you would kindly sit down and send me (VanfFilby,1240 Victoria Drive, Vancouver, B. C.) a note containing anycorrection or omission, no matter how slight .it mayeseem to you, sothat the next issue may not have such a legacy of errors. In thisiconnection, would you also give your Faculty and year as well, asithere are duplicate initials for several names already. It also wouldbe a great help if each Alumna would give her maiden name as wellas any others contracted since graduation.
Yours sincerely,
V,1X TUILBY(Compiler of Alumni Directory)
