1.Competition and Organizing Club1.1.Mission Go
Mission Go is a competition to bring and enhance good engineering approach and practice
for graduating and diploma students in mechanical engineering. The competition is basically
to design and fabricate a Go-Kart in extremely low budget followed by a competition of theselected teams. This competition will consist of several tests and tasks to be performed by the
vehicle and cracking in same will decide their existence in the competition. All the
participating teams have all the creativity and innovation flexibility with few restrictions
mentioned in the Rule Book. The competition gives teams the chance to demonstrate and
prove both their creativity and their engineering skills in comparison to the teams from other
universities across the country. MISSION GO is strongly inspired by the SAE INDIA events
(SUPRA SAE, BAJA SAE etc.). Participating teams will be having a time of three months
(Aug-Sep, 2012) to design and manufacture the vehicle.
1.2.LPU SAEINDIA COLLEGIATE CLUB
LPU SAEINDIA COLLEGIATE CLUB (LSCC) is a student organization of Lovely Professional
University Jalandhar (Punjab) which deals with the mechanical engineering projects. LSCC is
affiliated to Society of Automotive Engineers, an international organization which gives national and
international exposure to the engineering students. The main motive behind this is to get each and every
college indulge in such kind of activities which provides a competitive environment to the students and
also inspire them to come up with new and innovative ideas. This Go-Kart is going to be made in
extremely low budget that is Rs. 25000/- only, which will be the cheapest Go-Kart in India.
1.3. Judging CriterionVirtual Event selections will be made on the basis of the presentation of the design report and various
other selection parameters. Then the Go-Kart will be judged in a series of static (the judges will be
observing all the team members and may ask questions randomly to any team members for evaluating
various parameters) and dynamic event including Technical Inspection, Cost, Marketing presentation,
Engineering Design, solo performance trials, and high performance, Endurance test on the track. These
events are scored to determine how well the vehicle performs.

2.Associated Rules2.1.Rules Authority
There are several rules and restrictions which are to be followed by each and every team. LPU
SAEINDIA COLLEGIATE CLUB is having right to impound each and every rule associated with the
event MISSION GO. Violation by anyone of the participating member may be liable to be penalized
severely, inclusive of and up to debarring of the team from the competition at any stage or withdrawal
of award/awards, as well.
2.2.Validity of the Rules:The rules will be same throughout the event and any amendments will immediately be made known
to all the participating teams through emails and the same will be uploaded on the website
www.saelpu.org.
2.3.Rule Compliance:By registering for MISSION GO the team, members of the team as individuals, faculty advisors and
other personnel of the college and university agree to comply with, and be bound by, these rules and
all rule interpretations or procedures issued or announced by LPU SAEINDIA COLLEGIATECLUB. All team members, faculty advisors and other university representatives are required to
cooperate with, and follow all instructions from, competition organizers, officials and judges.
2.4.Right to Impound:LPU SAEINDIA COLLEGIATE CLUB reserves the right to impound any onsite registered vehicle at
any time or at the stage during the competition for inspection and the examination by organizers,
officials and technical inspectors.

3.Eligibility2.5.Team Requirement
2.5.1. Discipline- All the team members of the team must be undergraduate/diplomastudents in mechanical engineering.
2.5.2. Age- Every team member must be 18 years or above on Aug 1 st, 2012.2.5.3. Drivers Licence- The driver of the team is required to have a valid drivers
licence and the licence may be verified at any time during the dynamic event.
2.5.4. Faculty Advisor- Every team is required to have a faculty advisor fromrespective college/university.
2.6.Registration Requirement
2.6.1. Registration Fee- Teams are required to deposit a demand draft of Rs. 5000 infavour of LPU SAEINDIA COLLEGIATE CLUB payable at _________.
Registration fee must be deposited within the due dates of registration. No fee
will be accepted after the specified dates of registrations.
2.6.2. Documentation-2.7.Vehicle Requirements
2.7.1. Chassis Design Requirement2.7.1.1.Wheelbase and Track Width- The wheelbase of the vehicle must be at
least 50 inches and the smaller track width (front or rear) must be no less
than 75% of the wheelbase of the vehicle.
2.7.1.2.Ground Clearance- The ground clearance must be sufficient to prevent any
portion of the vehicle (other than tires) from touching the ground during track
events. Also, with the driver aboard there must be a minimum of 2.5 inches
of static ground clearance measured at any of the lowest point, under the
complete vehicle, at all times.
2.7.1.3. Suspension- Depending upon the choice of the team the suspension system
may or may not be used in the vehicle. But if any team wishes to use the
suspension system, it must be used in all four wheels and a total travel of at
least 2 inches must be there i.e., 1inch for jounce and 1inch for bounce.
2.7.1.4.Wheels and Tires-

2.7.1.5.Steering System- The steering system must be able to control(simultaneously) at least two (2) wheels. The steering system must have
positive steering stops that prevent the steering linkages from locking up
either in RH or LH turning (the inversion of a four-bar linkage at one of
the pivots). The stops may be placed on the uprights or on the rack and
must prevent the tires from contacting suspension, body, or frame
members during the track events. Allowable total steering system free play
(inclusive of play in all the steering linkages) is limited to 7 degrees,
measured at the steering wheel. The steering wheel must be mechanically
connected to the front wheels, i.e. steer- by-wire of the front wheels is
prohibited.
2.7.1.6.Braking System- The vehicle must be equipped with a braking system
that acts on all four wheels and is operated by a single control. It must
have two independent hydraulic circuits such that in the case of a leak or
failure at any point in one of the hydraulic circuits, in the system,sufficiently effective braking power is maintained on at least two wheels.
Brake-by-wire systems are prohibited.
2.7.1.7.Jack Point- There must be two jack points in the vehicle 1 in front and 1
in the rear to take vehiclee of the things happening in dynamic event.
2.7.2. Visibility Requirements- The engine compartment must be completely visibleto the examiners.
2.7.3. Final Vehicle Design- The design report must contain a valid and completedesign of the vehicle including all subsystems.
2.8.Safety Requirement
2.8.1. Helmet- The team members who will drive the vehicle are required to wear anISO certified helmet during the dynamic event.
2.8.2. Fire Extinguisher- A 2kg fire extinguisher is mandatory to be there in thevehicle throughout the dynamic event.
2.8.3. Seat and Seat Belt- Drivers seat should be properly fixed and rigid. Theremust be a set of seat belts in the seat. Use of seat belt is mandatory in the event.
No vehicles without the seat belt and fire extinguisher will be allowed to
participate in any stage of the dynamic event.
2.8.4. Shoes- The driver has to wear proper shoes while driving the vehicle in thedynamic event.
2.8.5. Path for Wires and Pipes- No pipelines/wire connections must go under thechassis. It is strictly prohibited. Doing so may lead to disqualification of the
team.

4.Power Train4.1.Engine- 100cc engines with max 5bhp can be used. The engine can be either two stroke
or four stroke as per the team choice (bike/scooter). Original bills and the engine papers
are to be presented on the dynamic event failure to which will directly lead to
disqualification of the team.
4.2.Fuel and Position of Fuel Tank- To avoid any alterations in the properties of the fuel
at the time of race, LSCC will be providing the fuel to all the teams at the standard
market rate. The capacity of the fuel tank must not exceed 5liters in volume. The
placement of fuel tank should be such that it maintains a proper distance from the engine
and also it should not be above the battery.
4.3. Muffler and exhaust- Concept of Go-Green should be kept in mind while selecting the
appropriate exhaust system.

5.Vehicle Identification
Each vehicle must have unique identification number. The vehicle identification number should have
college/university name and a year of participation, both separated hyphen by. For example: - vehicle
identification number for Lovely Professional University for 2012 event should be LPU-12. Teams
are required to have a team name with an impressive logo along with the college logo which are to be
placed on the vehicles body

6.Virtual EventIn the Virtual Event presentation of all the research and development over the vehicle is to be
given in front of the judges in 25 minutes. Just after the presentation a 10 minutes interview
round will be conducted in which the judges will ask questions from the team representativeson the basis of the presentation.
6.1.Design Report- The design report should contain design and details of all the
components used in the vehicle and the reason for selection of that particular
component/system. Design report will be verified with the vehicle at the time of
Dynamic Event, so the selection must be done carefully. Every document to be
submitted in the event must be in .pdf format. All teams should provide photos of their
vehicle upon entering the design tent. These photos should show the basic design of the
major components. At least four photos are recommended. These photos are to aid the
judges in selecting semi- finalists and are not the photos that will be used for yearly
documentation.6.2.Vehicle Design- The design report should contain a complete design of the vehicle
including the necessary body works.
NOTE: THE BODY WORKS OF THE VEHICLE MUST BE SIMILAR TO THE STANDARAD
GO-KART. ANY MODIFICATION MUST HAVE JUSTIDICATIONS.
6.3.Gantt Chart- Gantt charts illustrate the start and finish dates of the terminal elements andsummary elements of a project. Terminal elements and summary elements comprise the work
breakdown structure of the project. This chart is basically the management of the project and
distribution of different tasks in the team members with completion deadlines. The Gantt Chart
must be attached along with the design report
6.4.Design Validation Plan- DVPstands forDesign Validation Plan which tells the mode of failureof the vehicle which helps to decide the quick and necessary steps at that time. Teams are
required to prepare this Design Validation Plan with all possible modes of failure and their
recovery plans. No design report would be accepted without the DVP.
6.5.Cost Report- Market survey of all the components/systems used in the manufacturing of thevehicle in the form of cost report must be submitted with the design report. The cost report

should be very much elaborative. Each and every part of the vehicle must be covered in the cost
report. The cost of the vehicle must not exceed Rs.25000/- in any condition.
7.Dynamic EventThe Dynamic Event consists of three stages; Static Test, Dynamic Test and the Endurance
Test. Participating teams are suggested to take hard copy of all the documents and reports at the
time of dynamic event, anything can be asked by the judges to show and failure in showing willresult failure in the respective test.
7.1.Static Tests-
7.1.1.Design Report VS Vehicle Analysis- The vehicle will be verified with the design
report and not even a single alteration would be entertained in the vehicle from
the design report.
7.1.2.Cost Report VS Vehicle Cost- The cost report will be verified the actual cost of
the components and systems used in the vehicle at the time of Dynamic Event.
The cost report must not exceed Rs.25000/- in any case. The cost of the
components/systems mentioned in the cost report must not vary with that of
used in the vehicle.
7.1.3.Manufacturing Level- Good engineering practice will reflect a great
manufacturing level. The vehicle will be examined by the judges at the time of
Dynamic Event, so the participating teams are advised to manufacture the
vehicle with preplanned strategies so that the vehicle would be able to compete
in several tasks and tests.
7.1.4. DISCUSSION (QUESTIONNAIRE) - In the static test event while examining thevehicle, judges may throw questions on any of the team members. The team members
are advised to be prepared with the vehicle. Every team member is required to have a
hard copy of the vehicle documents.

7.2.Dynamic tests
7.2.1.Acceleration Test- 125 points
Objective-
Acceleration determines the time it takes the vehicle to accelerate along 100 ft (30.48 m
) flat course.
Procedure- Each team may make two (2) attempts but with different
drivers. Scoring will be based on the better of the two attempts. Timing may be done us
ing either electronic systems or stop watches.
Penalties-
Cones Down or Out- A two (2) second penalty will be added for each cone downor out (including entry and exit gate cones) that occurred on that particular run
to give the corrected elapsed time.
DNF- Vehicles that have not run by the end of the event (determined by theorganizer) will receive a Did Not Finish (DNF).
Scoring Formula-
Teams with Acceleration times that are more than twice that of the fastest vehicle will n
otreceive a score for this event. Teams attempting the event, but exceeding the time lim
it will be classified as ExcessTime. The following equation will be used for the acceleration score:
Acceleration score = 100x [(TlongestTyours)/ (TlongestTshortest)]
Where:Tshortest is the fastest time by any team
Tlongest is either (a) the slowest time by any team or
(b) 2x the fastest time whichever is the shorter interval.
Tyours is your teams best time
7.2.2.Skid Pad test-
Objective- The objective of the skid-pad event is to measure the vehicle s
cornering ability on a flat surface while making a constant-radius turn.

Skid Pad Layout- There will be two (2) pairs of concentric circles in a figure of
eight pattern. The centers of these circles will be 18.25 m (59.88 feet) apart. The
inner circles will be 15.25 m (50.03 feet) in diameter, and the outer circles will
be 21.25 m (69.72 feet) in diameter. The driving path will be the 3.0 m (9.84
feet) path between the inner and outer circles. The vehicles will enter and exit
through gates on a 3.0 m wide path that is tangential to the circles where they
meet. The line between the centers of the circles defines the start/stop line. A
lap is defined as traveling around one (1) of the circles from the start/stop line
and returning to the start/stop line.
Procedure- The vehicles will enter perpendicular to the figure eight and will take one
full lap on the right circle to establish the turn. The next lap will be on the right circle
and will be timed. Immediately following the second lap, the vehicle will enter the left
circle for the third lap. The fourth lap will be on the left circle and will be timed.
Immediately upon finishing the fourth lap, the vehicle will exit the track. The vehicle
will exit at the intersection moving in the same direction as entered. A driver has theoption to take a second run immediately after the first.
NOTE: Each team may make two (2) attempts but with different
drivers. Scoring will be based on the better of the two attempts. Timing may be done using either
electronic systems or stop watches.

Penalties-
Cones Down Or Out- A penalty of 0.25 seconds will be added to the time for every conethat is knocked down or out (including gate cones).
DNF- Vehicles that spin-out can continue as long as they have not gone off course willbe classified as DNF.
Incorrect Laps- Vehicles that do not follow procedure, i.e. run an incorrect number oflaps or run the Laps in the wrong sequence will be classified as DNF.
7.2.3. Autocross Test-Objective- The objective of the autocross event is to evaluate the vehicle's
maneuverability and handling qualities on a tight course without the hindrance of
competing vehicles. The autocross course will combine the performance features of
acceleration, braking, and cornering into one event.
Procedure- The vehicle will be staged such that the front wheels are 6 m (19.7 feet)
behind the starting line. The timer starts only after the vehicle crosses the start line. There
will be no particular order of the vehicles to run each heat. The organizer will determine
the allowable windows for each heat and retains the right to adjust for weather or
technical delays. Vehicles that have not run by the end of the heat will be disqualified for
that heat.
NOTE: Each team may make two (2) attempts but with different
drivers. Scoring will be based on the better of the two attempts. Timing may be done using either
electronic systems or stop watches.
Autocross Course Specifications & Speeds
The following specifications will suggest the maximum speeds that will be encountered
on the course. Average speeds should be 40 km/hr (25 mph) to 48 km/hr (30 mph).
Straights: No longer than 60 m (200 feet) with hairpins at both ends (or) no longer than
45 m (150 feet) with wide turns on the ends.
Constant Turns: 23 m (75 feet) to 45 m (148 feet) diameter.
Hairpin Turns: Minimum of 9 m (29.5 feet) outside diameter (of the turn).

Slaloms: Cones in a straight line with 7.62 m to 12.19 m Spacing.
Miscellaneous: Chicanes, multiple turns, decreasing radius turns, etc. The minimum
track width will be 3.5 m (11.5 feet).
The length of each run will be approximately 0.805 km (1/2 mile) and the driver will
complete a specified number of runs.
Scoring Formula-
Autocross score = 150x [(TlongestTyours)/ (TlongestTshortest)]
Penalties-
Cones Down Or Out- Two (2) seconds per cone, including any after the finishline.
Driver must re-enter the track at or prior to the missed gate or a twenty (20)second penalty will be assessed. Penalties will not be assessed for accident avoidance orother reasons deemed sufficient by the track officials.
Missed Slalom- Missing one or more gates of a given slalom will be counted asone "off-course" per occurrence. Each occurrence will incur a twenty (20) second
penalty.
7.3.Durability tests
NOTE: Endurance & Fuel Economy event will consist of a single heat.
Right to Change Procedure- The following are general guidelines for conducting the
endurance and fuel economy event. The organizers reserve the right to establish
procedures specific to the conduct of the event at the site.
Endurance Objective- The Endurance Event is designed to evaluate the overall
performance of the vehicle and to test the vehicles reliability.
Fuel Economy test- The fuel economy test is based on the average liters per kilometer
fuel economy obtained during the endurance heat.

NOTE- The vehicles fuel economy will be measured in conjunction with the endurance event.
The fuel economy under racing conditions is important in most forms of racing and also shows
how well the vehicle has been tuned for the competition. This is a compromise event because the
fuel economy score and endurance score will be calculated from the same heat. No refueling will
be allowed during an endurance heat.
7.3.1.Endurance test- Course speeds can be estimated by the following course
specifications. Average speed should be 45 km/hr to 55 km/hr with top speeds
of approximately 80 km/hr.
Straights: No longer than 100 m with hairpins at both ends.
Constant Turns: 30.0 m to 54.0 m diameter.
Hairpin Turns: Minimum of 9.0 m outside diameter (of the turn).
Slaloms: Cones in a straight line with 9.0 m to 15.0 m Spacing.
Miscellaneous: Chicanes, multiple turns, decreasing radius turns, etc. The
Minimum track width will be 4.5 m.
Procedure- The event will be run as a single heat approximately 20 km long. Teams
are not allowed to work on their vehicles during the heat. A driver change can be made
during a three (3) minute period at the midpoint of the heat. Wheel-to-wheel racing isprohibited. Passing another vehicle may only be done in an established passing zone.
Endurance Fuel Fill- Before entering the event each vehicles fuel tank must be
filled to the fuel level line at the fueling station. During fueling, once filled to the
scribe line, no shaking or tilting of the tank or fuel system (incl. entire vehicle) is
allowed.
Vehicle Starting/Restarting- The vehicle must be capable of starting / restarting
without external assistance at all times once the vehicle has begun the heat. If a vehicle
stalls out on the track, it will be allowed one (1) lap by the car that is following it
(approximately one (1) minute) to restart. If a vehicle has a restart problem at the end of
Driver Change, it will be allowed a further two (2) minutes to restart the engine. If

restarts are not accomplished within the above times, the car will be deemed disabled
and scored DNF for the heat.
Driver Changing Procedure- Elapsed time will begin when Driver A enters the course
and crosses the timing line. Driver A will drive for 10 km, and pull into the driver
change area Three (3) minutes are allowed for the team to change drivers.
Driver 1 will exit the vehicle and any necessary adjustments will be made to the
vehicle to fit Driver B (seat cushions, pedal position, etc.). Only three (3) team
members, including the driver or drivers, will be allowed in the driver change area, and
only the tools necessary to change drivers and/or tires will be carried into this area (no
tool chests etc.). Extra people entering the driver change area will result in a 20 pt
penalty to the final endurance score for each extra person entering the area.
Driver 2 will then be secured in the vehicle. The driver change area will be placed such
that the timing system will see the driver change as an extra long lap. Unless this driverchange takes longer than three minutes, this extra long lap will not count. If the driver
change takes longer than three minutes, the extra time will be counted into the final
time. Driver 2 will drive for 10 km and elapsed time will stop when the car completes
the total 20 km distance. Driver 2 will proceed directly to the fueling station. The tank

Vehicle Breakdown and Stalls- If a vehicle breaks down it will be removed from the
course and will not be allowed to re-enter the course. If a vehicle stalls, or ingests a
cone, etc., it will be allowed to restart and re-enter the course where it went off, but no
work may be performed on the vehicle. If a car stalls and cannot be restarted withoutexternal assistance, the track workers will push the car clear of the track. At the
discretion of event officials, two (2) team members may retrieve the car under direction
of the track workers.
Endurance Minimum Speed Requirement- If a car is unable to maintain lap times
within 133% of the fastest lap time for the course, and then it must exit immediately.
Disqualification for failure to maintain the minimum speed will be made at the
discretion of the Director of Operations.
Endurance Lap Timing- Each lap of the endurance event will be individually timed
either by electronic means, or by hand. The time for an individual heat will be
determined by subtracting the extra long lap for the driver change from the total time
and adding any penalty points.

Cones Down Or Out- Two (2) seconds per cone. This includes cones before thestart line and after the finish line.
Off Course-For an OC, the driver must re-enter the track at or prior to the missed gateor a twenty (20) second penalty will be assessed.
Missed Slalom- Missing one or more gates of a given slalom will incur a twenty (20)second penalty.
Penalties for Moving Violations- Failure to obey a flag: 1 minute Over Driving (After a closed black flag): 1 Minute Vehicle to Vehicle contact: DISQUALIFIED
Out of Order- Running out of ordertwo (2) minute penalty Mechanical Problem- No additional penalty other than the time lost to ensure that the
car is safe to continue.
Reckless or Aggressive Driving- Any reckless or aggressive driving behavior (such asforcing another car off the track, refusal to allow passing, or close driving that wouldcause the likelihood of car contact) will result in a black flag for that driver. When a
driver receives a black flag signal, he must proceed to the penalty box to listen to a
reprimand for his driving behavior. The amount of time spent in the penalty box will
vary from one (1) to four (4) minutes depending upon the severity of the offense.
Inexperienced Driver- The Chief Director of Operations may disqualify a driver if thedriver is too slow, too aggressive, or driving in a manner that, in the sole opinion of the
event, officials, demonstrates an inability to properly control their car resulting in a
DNF.
Poor Fuel Economy- Mileage exceeding 26 liters/100 kmfour (4) minutes.NOTE- The score for the Endurance Event is the sum of the Endurance Time Score and the
Endurance Finish Score. The Endurance Time Score is based on the team's time for event,
including penalties, compared to the fastest team. A vehicle will also receive an Endurance
Finish Score of twenty five (25) points if the team's time for the event, including penalties, is less
than or equal to the maximum allotted time. The total Endurance Score is calculated using the
formula below.
Endurance Score Formula-
Endurance score = 150x [(TlongestTyours)/ (TlongestTshortest)] +50
NOTE- Tlongest will be 1.333 times the Tshortest
7.3.2. Fuel Economy- The fuel economy score is based on the average liters perkilometer fuel economy obtained during the endurance heat.

Fuel Economy Score Formula-
If Vyour is less than Vmax then the following equation will be used to determine the fuel
economy score:
Fuel Economy Score = 75 X [(VmaxVyours)/ (VmaxVmin)]
NOTE- Vmax is equal to 5.2 liters and will be adjusted to represent 26 liters/100 km (9.04
mpg) if the course is shortened or lengthened. In case, if Vyour is greater than Vmax
then 0 points will be given to the performing vehicle.

8.FlagsBLACK FLAG - Pull into the penalty box for discussion with the Director of Operations or
other official concerning an incident. A time penalty may be assessed for such incident.
BLACK FLAG with Orange Dot - Pull into the penalty box for a mechanical inspection of
your car, something has been observed that needs closer inspection.
BLUE FLAG - Pull into the designated passing zone to be passed by a faster competitor.
Obey the corner workers hand signals at the end of the passing zone to merge into
competition.
CHECKER FLAG - Your session has been completed. Exit the course at the first
opportunity.
GREEN FLAG - Your session has started; enter the course under direction of the starter.
NOTE: If you stall the vehicle, please restart and await another green flag as the
opening in traffic may have closed.
RED FLAG - Come to an immediate safe controlled stop on the course. Pull to the side of
the course as much as possible to keep the course open. Follow corner worker directions.
YELLOW FLAG (Stationary) - Danger, SLOW DOWN, be prepared to take evasive
action, something has happened beyond the flag station. NO PASSING unless directed by thecorner workers.
YELLOW FLAG (Waved) - Great Danger, SLOW DOWN, and evasive action is most
likely required, BE PREPARED TO STOP, something has happened beyond the flag station,
NO PASSING unless directed by the corner workers.

RED AND YELLOW STRIPED FLAG - Something is on the racing surface that should
not be there. Be prepared for evasive maneuvers to avoid the situation. (Corner workers may
be able to point out what and where it is located, but do not expect it.)
WHITE FLAG - There is a slow moving vehicle on the course that is much slower than you
are. Be prepared to approach it at a cautious rate.

9.Rules of Conducting the Event9.1.Behavior-9.1.1.Unsportsmanlike Conduct- In the event of unsportsmanlike conduct, the team
will receive a warning from an official. A second violation will result in
expulsion of the team from the competition.Failure of a team member to follow
an instruction or command directed specifically to that team or team member
will result in a twenty five (25) point penalty.
9.1.2.Arguments with Officials- Argument with, or disobedience to, any official may
result in the team being eliminated from the competition. All members of the
team may be immediately escorted from the grounds.
9.2.Smoking and Illegal Material- Alcohol, illegal drugs, weapons or other illegal material
are prohibited on the event site during the competition. This rule will be in effect during
the entire competition. Any violation of this rule by a team member will cause theexpulsion of the entire team. This applies to both team members and faculty advisors.
Any use of drugs, or the use of alcohol by an underage individual, will be reported to the
local authorities for prosecution.
