Nellore: The notorious ‘ham-mer psycho killer’ of Nellorewas awarded death sentence bythe 4th additional sessions co-urt here on Thursday. Kukkala-palli Venkateswarlu (29) hadhammered four people to deathbefore robbing them. He wasarrested in 2016 after he killedPrabhavati, wife of a charteredaccountant, Ramaraju Nages-war Rao, at their home.

Venkateswarlu had sentshivers down the spines of Nel-lore district residents andthrown a challenge to the poli-ce with his clever modus ope-

randi. A native of Kavali, heused to run a fast food pushcarteatery. Addicted to liquor, heborrowed money from lendersand incurred losses. Unable torepay debts, Venkateswarlustarted robbing people and kil-led them mercilessly.

He used to plan his robberi-es by identifying houses inwhich only women were pre-

sent. In his first robbery, hestruck the house of one Shimu-ni Kavita. He hammered Kavi-ta to death and, in the process,injured her mother-in-law andher daughters. He then madeaway with gold ornaments.

On April 1, 2016, Venkates-warlu killed an elderly couple –A temple priest and his wife atPeddacherukuru. In this doub-le murder too, he used a ham-mer. On July 10, 2016, he enteredthe house of Prabhavati in theguise of a cable TV worker andattacked her with a hammer. Atthe time of fleeing from the ho-use with jewellery, Prabhava-ti’s husband entered and raisedan alarm because of which hewas caught Venkateswarlu.

On Thursday, the court saidcrimes committed by Venka-teswarlu fell in the category of‘rarest of rare cases’ and awar-ded him death penalty.

Hyderabad: Stating that the ru-les do not permit any kind of in-tervention after the issuance ofan election notification, JusticeP Naveen Rao of the HyderabadHigh court on Thursday refusedto stay the ongoing election pro-cess pertaining to Kakinada Mu-nicipal Corporation.

The judge was dealing withthree pleas that challenged thestate’s orders and the notifica-tion issued by the state electioncommission for conducting elec-tions to the civic body. The peti-tioners brought to the court’s no-tice the recent order of a singlejudge of the same HC which stay-ed the merger of two wards inthe civic body. The current elec-tion is being held only for the re-maining 48 wards. As per norms,every civic corporation must ha-ve at least 50 wards.

Judge dismissed the miscel-laneous applications that soughtstalling of election and admittedmain writ petitions. The judgemade it clear the election wouldbe subject to final outcome of pe-titions. The government was as-ked to file counter affidavit. TNN

Hyderabad: The Hyderabad High Court on Thursday up-held the power of the state to acquire land through negotia-tions with the farmers and land owners under the amendedLand Acquisition Act and the consequent rules framed forthe purpose. The bench of acting Chief Justice RameshRanganathan and Justice J Uma Devi however made it clearthat appropriate section, rule and agreement format shouldbe pressed into service while acquiring land by consent forKondapochamma Sagar, which is part of Kaleswaram lift ir-rigation scheme.

The bench was disposing of the case filed by Srinivas andsix other farmers of Mamidyal village in Mulugu mandal inSiddipet district. They contended thatthey filed objections to the proposed acqu-isition of land in Mamidyal and threeother villages namely Bailampur, Thane-darpally and Thanedarpally tanda fortransfer of land and all rights therein tothe agency concerned for the construc-tion of Kondapochamma Sagar reservoir.Without finalising the objections as persection 15 of the new Act and issuing finaldeclaration under section 19 of the Act,the collector was entering into agree-ments with farmers for taking the land.

Telangana advocate general D Pra-kash Reddy said 2013 Act was amendedand new section 30-A was introduced per-mitting the government to take land byconsent prior to award inquiry stage.
