Why is Lab Safety Important?
Lab safety is a major aspect of every lab basedscience class.Lab safety rules and symbols are needed so that
students do not injure themselves or theirclassmates.

Lab Safety Rules
1. Always follow the teachers directions and onlydo lab work when a teacher is present.
2. Conduct yourself in a responsible manner at alltimes. No Horseplay!
3. Do not touch any equipment, chemicals, or othermaterials until told to do so.
4. Do not eat food, drink beverages, or chew gum inthe lab. Do not use lab glassware as food orbeverage containers
5. Report ALL accidents to your teacherimmediately, even if you think it is minor.

Accidents and Injuries
Report ALL accidents and injuries to your teacherimmediately!!!
Be aware of safety hazards associated with each
chemical you use.Eye accident Wash the eye with copious amounts ofwater for at least 15 min.
Fire Burns Stop, Drop, and be covered with a fireblanket or soaked with water. Do not remove clothingstuck to victim. Get medical attention immediately.

Waste Disposal
First ask your teacher where/how to dispose of
waste.
Never pour anything down the drain unlessyou are told to do so.
A waste bottle will be supplied for substance
that cannot go down the drain

Reasons for proper waste disposal
Hazardous chemicals down the drain can lead to
pollution of ground water, lakes, rivers, etc.
Plants and animals will die if they are exposed tohazardous chemical waste.
Serious health problems will become present in people if
hazardous waste finds its way into drinking water.

1. Many things happen in the lab, and you cannever be sure how your area has been used, orwhether it was properly cleaned up.
Because of this, and possible contamination fromthe animals, you should not bring food or drinkinto the lab with you! Also, don't put anything
that's come in contact with the lab table-pens,pencils, fingers, etc. - into your mouth or eyes.

7. Although labs rarely involve dangerousmaterials, some can have lasting effects onclothing, so you might want to bring a protectivecover-up.
With some procedures, protective eye coveringswill be required. If you have long hair or
dangling jewelry, keep them out of your workingmaterials.

8. Clean up your stuff! Your area should look at theend of your lab like it did when you started.
When in groups, everyone is responsible for clean-up. Points may be lost if this is not done.

9. When working with chemicals or cultures, makesure you do not mix things together in thesource glassware - that includes droppers andmixing rods.
It is not always safe to mix tap water into materialsby washing them, either.

10. Dispose of all waste materials properly. Thewastebasket is near the door.
Broken glass does not go into the wastebasket -there's a special box for it next door in the preproom.
Notify the instructor any time something getsbroken or if you're injured, even mildly.

11. Try to always stay alert while you're in the lab.
Know where the emergency equipment - first aidkit, fire extinguisher, eyewash fountain, etc -are (most are on the front wall or just acrossthe hall).
Know the appropriate route out of the buildingduring an emergency.
