FIRST ROBOTIC TELESCOPE

India’s first robotic telescope became operational on June 12, 2018, atIndian Astronomical Observatory in Hanle, Ladakh. It is the first telescopedesigned to observe dynamic or transient events in the universe and is a

joint project of Indian Institute of Astrophysics and IIT-Bombay.

The 2019 edition of Limca Book of Records is replete with feats and records set by Indians from all walks of life andfrom across fields between 2017 and 2018.Here is a snapshot of some of them

Unusual startups andwhat makes them tick

AMO LABSouth Korean startup Amo Lab is using bioelectric medicinein a wearable sleep device called the Amo+ that looks like a

necklace. Electromagnetic signals from the device stim-ulate nerves in the chest to reduce stress and

stabilise heart rate. The company plans tolaunch the Amo+ this year for under $200.Amo Labs is also developing a device that

helps with blood circulation and respiration.

MYCROFT AIThis open-source, privacy-focused voice assis-tant, does not gather any personal data andkeeps all communications private. The startupwill start shipping Mycroft Mark 2 from mid-2019. The speaker, from the Kansas City-basedstartup, also has a mic array, 1080p LCD, plusa physical camera shutter and mute button. The web-based voice assistant can run ondesktops, in cars, or on a Raspberry Pi.

AERONEXTThis Japanese startup launched in 2018 builta self-stabilising drone capable of deliveries, industrial use and most interestingly, shoot-ing a 360-degree virtual reality footage.Using what Aeronext calls its 4D Gravitycore technology, the drone is always able tokeep its centre axis vertical in order toshoot uninterrupted high-res drone footagethat can be incorporated into VR content.

BRAINTAPA startup called BrainTap Technologies is offering

a service called ‘Braintapping’, which uses a‘neuro algorithm’ to sync a user’s brainwavesto a specialised sound. The combination ofbinaural (dual-toned) beats through theheadphones and gentle light pulses throughthe eye mask is designed to induce relax-

ation and ‘ensure maximum neuroplasticity’ inabout 20 minutes. It is controlled via an app.

The autonomous subsea iBubble drone, from French startup Notilo Plus, can dive

to a depth of up to 200 ft anduse AI to follow a diver

around from up to 60ft away with no cable

attached. The divercan control the drone with

quick gestures from a smart water-proof wristband, or the drone can be con-trolled from a remote on the surface.

FLUX PLANETThis Seoul-based start-up, the brainchild offormer Samsungemployees, has built a4D scanner and 3D pro-jector for mapping andrendering AR/VR con-tent. The company aimsto release what it callsthe first-ever consumer 4D scanner this year for$50,000. It uses 250 cameras for full-body move-ment and cloud-based software to reconstructcomplex models.

YapeYape, which waslaunched in 2018out of a researchgroup from theMilan TechnicalInstitute, is a compactself-driving, zero emissionsrobot for last-mile delivery. The two-wheeled, electric motor robot has a rangeof 80 km. It is designed to avoid traffic inthe narrow streets of European cities, trav-elling at a max speed of around 6 kmph onthe pavement and up to 19 kmph on roads.

From cutting-edge AI and 4D scanners to high-techdrones, check out the startups and their fascinating tech ROBOMODIX

Robomodix is arobotics platformdesigned to experi-ment with and refineopen-source AI tech-nologies in a robotintended to reducethe stigma of robotswith the humanoid form. The Oregon-based compa-ny recently showed off its two prototypes, Alan andAlena. The prototypes are social robots with smartspeaker and assistant capabilities, integrated withAlexa, Siri and Google Assistant.
