Terms to Know Wetland is an area of low land covered
by water. Swamp is a wetland in which mostly
trees and other woody plants grow. Marsh is a wetland in which mostly
grasses and other soft stem plants grow. Estuary is a place where salt and fresh
water mix.
Climate The climate for this area is hot, humid
and wet.
Animals live here…. Alligators are the largest predators in the
swamp. Many species of snakes are found here
including the cottonmouth water moccasin.
Green Tree Frog is often seen on lilies on the swamp.
Sandhill Crane is a large bird 4-5 feet tall, nickname is the “watchmen of the swamp.”
Plants live here…. Some of the swamp is a prairie and
covered with grass, moss and ferns. The Okefenokee has meat-eating plants
such as the bladderwort and the golden trumpet.
Cypress trees grow well here.
Okefenokee Swamp Okefenokee Swamp is the largest swamp
in North America, located in the southeastern corner of Georgia.
