Popcorn-ology 101Popcorn actually has a long shelf life. You know those tins you see at retail stores around the holidays? Those are popped and packaged MONTHS in advance (unlike here where we make and package our popcorn daily). Despite this long shelf life, popcorn must be protected from humidity; heat and, in some cases, light. Here at “Popcorn Charlie” & Company we strive to provide you with the best, freshest and best-looking popcorn available anywhere on Earth! For example, during the summer we dehumidify our kitchen area, removing gallons of water from the air every day.

Heat & Humidity will ruin your popcorn. With candied flavors, heat and/or humidity can make loose corn sticky and turn it into a brick. Other popcorns like butter and cheese flavors will lose crispness and become chewy, making them seem stale. Our recommendations: Non-candied popcorn can be ‘revived’ by placeing it on a baking tray and putting it in a 250ºF pre-heated oven for fifteen minutes. Store popcorn in a cool dry place, NOT in your car or near a window at home! We recommend pouring popcorn into a bowl and clipping the bag closed right away to prevent moisture from getting to it, especially in the summertime. Buy bag sizes that you can eat within a few days of opening, then pop in and see us when you run out. Popcorn tins are fairly air-tight and can protect your popcorn for extended periods of time, especially during the winter months when humidity is low. We can recommend tin sizes based on how much popcorn you and your family eat on average. Tins also protect popcorn from light.

Light, especially sunlight, can affect certain colors. The beta carotene used to color our butter flavored popcorn will fade over time if exposed to the UV rays in sunlight. Black and purple colored candied popcorn will also fade when exposed to light. Flavor won’t be affected, but the color vibrance that is lost makes for a less desirable presentation. For this reason, we don’t make grape (for example) popcorn balls and put them on the shelves… we can still make them for special orders. We’ll just package them and keep them in a brown paper bag or cardboard box for you so they’ll stay beautiful until you’re ready to enjoy them.

Our popcorn is as fresh as it gets, but if you crave it straight from the popper, we have all the raw ingredients and equipment you need in order to make your own butter flavored popcorn at home. Sorry, we no longer allow customers to come into the kitchen and stick their open mouths directly under the popcorn kettle… actually, we never did.
