Can you guess what all of the individuals named above have in common? No, we don’t share a birthday, a hometown or an astrological sign. What we do have in common is that we are all community college graduates.
Having celebrated Community College Awareness Month in April, I think it’s appropriate to take a look at the wide range of successful individuals who started their higher education careers at a community college. Notably, all of the people named above – except for one – went on to continue their studies at a four-year college or university after earning their associate’s degree. (Bonus points if you can pick out the individual who did not continue their formal education at a four-year institution.)
Community colleges are a critical component of the country’s postsecondary education system, educating nearly half of all undergraduate students in the United States today. They provide open access to higher education, prepare students to immediately enter the workforce or for transfer to four- year institutions and provide workforce development and job training. Owens, as a
comprehensive community college, offers a wide array of credit and non-credit programs to meet the needs of more than 45,000 credit and non- credit students each year at our campuses in Toledo and Findlay and at our learning centers, The Source in downtown Toledo and Arrowhead Park in Maumee. We really do offer classes from “A” (accounting) to “Z” (zoology).
Community colleges have great faculty and staff. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, 80 percent of full-time college faculty have a master’s or a Ph.D. in their field of study. Not only do community college students benefit from their instructors’ academic knowledge, they also benefit from their instructors’ experience in business, industry, the arts and so on. At Owens, our faculty provides real-world experience that illustrates classroom lessons.
So, as we prepare to welcome the class of 2010 into the ranks of Owens Alumni, please remember that wherever you are, Owens is and will always be your community college.
Sincerely,
2

Owens alumni enjoyed a little ice time this winter at the new Huntington Center when they checked out the puck handling skills of the Toledo Walleye.
Prior to the game, alumni mingled in the Aquarium while enjoying an Italian buffet. More than 80 alumni and their guests cheered on the Walleye as they played the Johnstown Chiefs.
Everyone won that evening as the Walleye beat the Chiefs in overtime 5-4 and the alumni had a great time. •

Nearly 250 area residents enjoyed an uncommonly good evening of dinner and entertainment in support of the Owens Community College Foundation’s Success Scholarship Program. All proceeds from “An Uncommon Evening” – more than $50,000 – will benefit Owens scholarships through the Success Program.
During the pre-dinner silent auction and reception, guests enjoyed tasty hors d’oeuvres and bid on a variety of items provided by area businesses, organizations and individuals. The auction included nine pieces of art donated by Owens Community College faculty members.
The evening’s entertainment prominently featured Owens faculty and students, including the Owens Dance Company, the Owens Jazz Express, the Owens Guitar Ensemble, and Tapestry, a well-known local guitar and harp duo featuring Denise and Michael Grupp-Verbon. Denise is a long- time instructor at the College.
The Glassmen Drum & Bugle Corps welcomed guests into the ballroom for dinner with their stirring music. The Glassmen have been lauded as one of the most entertaining and educational drum and bugle corps in the world and have been featured performers and educational clinicians at festivals and celebrations across the United States and throughout Europe. Following their performance, dinner was served in an uncommon manner, with dessert first and the salad course last.
Gala Raises More than $50,000
Owens’ theatre instructor Jeremy Meier served as master of ceremonies, ably assisted by Owens students Anthony Hunter and Megan Wasserman, who attended in the guise of “Kyle” and “Serenity,” two characters from this spring’s student production of Mitch Albom’s play “And The Winner Is.”
The brightest stars of the evening were the first and second-year Success Program students who were featured on large banners hanging from the ballroom’s ceiling, in welcome letters by the students at each place setting, and in a video detailing the benefits of the Success Program, “The Faces of Success.”•
Green Industry Reunion The Landscape and Turfgrass Management Program is in its 20th year. To celebrate, alumni from the program had their 20 year reunion. More than 75 graduates from the program reunited and met fellow alumni at the Belmont Country Club. In addition to enjoying an entertaining evening, they networked, caught up with past professors, tested their skills in woody plant and turf identification games and won great door prizes. •
