during a lot of WIP`s activities. It is now recognized that pain and certainly chronic pain is a complex phenomenon where besides the physiological or somatic problems, psycho-social and existential factors may play an important role. Therefore, care should be centered around the patient and according to each patient’s specific problems and needs.

The World Institute of Pain continues to focus on promoting training and education and hopes that all pain physicians over the world have access to high quality training and educational support. Therefore, we hope that pain physicians around the world should be aware that they are in the preferential position to be able to relieve the patient’s suffering and that they can be involved in building strategies to improve the patient’s management in developed and developing countries all over the world. By becoming a member of the WIP you will participate in active membership by pain conferences, workshops, special fellowships, certifications and endorsements. WIP’s scholarly journal, PAIN PRACTICE and the books of our members are a rich collection of knowledge shared generously by those who have contributed as clinicians, researchers and editors. Our journal, together with the Fellow of Interventional Pain Practice® certification program, and now also the Certified Interventional Pain Sonologist certification program, are the hallmarks of WIP. We come together as both teachers and learners at the biennial WIP World Congresses, where we celebrate and facilitate the global exchange of knowledge and strive to set the level even higher to achieve greater impact and outcomes where the needs are greatest for patients.

A consortium of professional pain societies, including WIP signed in 2012 the declaration of Miami: “It is the right of any human individual to have access to the best possible pain relief in any and every part of the world.”

We strongly need your support, so do not hesitate to contact us if you have questions, or any good idea to support our mission. Feel welcome to our website and be aware that thousands of our WIP members, in all countries over the world are available to help and support any initiative to relief suffering from pain.

I hope that you can support WIP`s mission worldwide, and in case you have special questions or wishes, please contact us.

Warmest regards Kris Vissers, MD, PhD, FIPP - President of WIP

2014 Samuel J. Hassenbusch Prize Recipient

(To) achieve (this award) in the specialty I chose and love is truly amazing.”

WIP and its Board of Examination congratulate Cherilyn Fenech, MD, MRCP, DESA, FIPP, the 2014 recipient of the HASSENBUSCH PRIZE. This prize is awarded annually to the Fellow of Interventional Pain Practice® who earned the highest composite score on the certification examination. The prize is named in honor of the late Samuel J. Hassenbusch, III, MD, PhD, FIPP, a true

pioneer in the field of pain medicine and the WIP FIPP certification program.Dr. Fenech shared her enthusiasm with this response to the Award Committee, “Thank you very much! It was

a lovely and unexpected surprise! I don’t think I ever won a prize in my life, and (to) achieve it in the speciality I chose and love is truly amazing. Thank you so much.”Dr. Fenech of Malta at the time of the exam, is now a consultant in the chronic pain management and neuromo-

gulation centre at Guy’s and St. Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust in London, England, UK. Dr. Fenech is the ninth recipient of this prize, awarded annually since 2008. For the

complete list of recipients and history of the Hassenbusch Prize, please visit our website.

In addition to that, we know that chronic pain is a continuum of acute pain, and acute pain patients in our hospital set-ting represents a much greater number than chronic pain patients. We thought that focusing on the theme “from acute to chronic” will be more practical in our setting. We said; well you cannot come to us, we will reach you.We thought of having a circle of electronic communication where we can bring the greatest experts from all over the

world to you, so you can chat with them, e-mail them, ask them questions and find proper answers to your queries. In our circle we could recruit some of the biggest names in acute pain management: Narinder Rawal of University Hospital in Örebro, Sweden; Dr. Marie Hanna of Johns Hopkins in the USA; Dr Loran M. Soliman of Cleveland Clinic in the USA; Dr Milton Raff of South Africa….and a long list of experts that will be involved in our circle of communication. For one long year we were working on this project, and finally the day has come.It is my pleasure to announce the launch of our WIP Acute Pain Medicine project ( APM) website, to which you can

register for FREE. You will find a full library that was brought to you so you can download topics that will enrich your knowledge in the field of acute pain.We will also have some activities to which you will be invited to so you can join us to improve your medical skills and

return to your country with this knowledge and to influence your society. We will help you to work on forums and guidelines that are fashioned for your demands, giving you the examples we

have, like the ‘middle east guidelines in acute pain’. Since Africa represents a major target for us, we will have a section for French speaking countries, under the supervision

of Dr Patrick Narchi of France and Dr. Magdi R. Iskander, the head of our Middle East Section. “Africa, we reach out for you.” I would like to thank the WIP Board, especially Dr. Richard Rauck the former president, and Dr. Kris Vissers, the current

president, who believed in our mission and helped us in all directions to make this dream come true. Finally, my colleagues, I wish you to join, contribute, and interact in this Website as our success in our mission depends

on your interaction. To my esteemed colleagues, who agreed to join and participate in this huge work, I appreciate your time and efforts in advance. For all expert physicians who are out there reaching out totheir colleagues, trying to help them, helping us in this

esteemed work, thank you, because “YOU ARE MAKING A DIFFERENCE.” For more information about this project please contact either Dr. Magdi Iskander at [email protected] or

Dr. Amany Ayad at [email protected] .

“Why I teach!” - Andrea M. Trescot, MD DABIPP FIPP (FIPP 2002-47) (Anchorage, Alaska, USA)

Good morning Dr. Trescot,My name is Fabio Lhamby and I was student of intervention-ism in pain curse in the Clínica Singular. I’m very grateful for your willingness to share your knowledge with us in the course of clinical Singular Campinas.Throughout this year, I fell in love with interventional pain management and you, Dr. Charles and Dr. Fabricio were the cupids who made this happen.I just wanted to thank you for the teachings and thank you for the affection with which you treated us.I’m already looking forward to see you in SOBRAMID. Observership - Mehran Kouchek, MD FIPP (FIPP 2013-752) (Tehran, Iran)It’s a great pleasure for me to present a brief report of my visit in Lubbock, Texas, USA during September 2014.During one month of observership, I had the honor and chance to be familiar with the diagnostic and therapeutic methods for patients suffering from chronic pain, in the hands of the scientists and experts such as Prof. Racz, Dr. Heavner, Dr. Day and Dr. Bosscher through their visits in pain clinics and their procedures in the operating rooms. Watching those procedures in Grace Clinic and UMC, was like discovery of a treasure for me which I had never experienced but was always dreaming for it. I could see whatever I’d read in the books and study whatever I was watching everyday.I can say that, since 2009, after joining several congresses and workshops of WIP in Maastricht and Budapest and my observership in Cleveland Clinic, which all resulted in being certified as an FIPP, I highly improved my knowl-edge of interventional pain practice in Lubbock and I hope that the people of my country can benefit from this precious experience of mine. In this regard I would like to thank all WIP organizers, teachers and personnel for ma-terializing this opportunity that I could achieve the FIPP exam and just begin what should I know and practice in the exciting field of Interventional pain management . I really appreciate all the efforts of Mrs. Paula Brashear for managing all difficult administrative issues which she kindly followed months before my trip. Without her help I could have never found myself in Lubbock. And last point but not the least, is the wonderful team of nursing and staff of the Grace Center and UMC whom I’ve learned a lot and will never forget them. Our WIP Section Chair here (Dr. Arman Taheri) sends his best greetings to you. Best regards.

Gabriela Rocha Lauretti MD MSc PhD FIPP

(FIPP 2013-792)

WINSTON-SALEM, North Carolina, USA (January 29, 2015) – The World Institute of Pain (WIP) has conferred the Excellence in Pain Practice (EPP) Award for Comprehensive Multidisciplinary Pain Practice on Clínica para o Tratamento da Dor-Hospital das Clinicas, Faculdade de Medicina de Ribeirão Preto-Universidade de São Paulo, in Brazil.

Dr. Charles Amaral de Oliveira, an anaesthesiologist with Médico Intervencionista da Dor in Campinas, Brazil said, “For several years now, the clinic has been headed by Dr. Gabriela Lauretti… The university of which she is a member develops important actions for the dissemination of pain education and treatment in the regional where she is located, and is respected and renowned in our country. “

“As a teaching hospital and tertiary care center, patients are seen from all over that region of Brazil with the most difficult pain problems,” said site inspector for WIP Dr. Andrea Trescot, MD, FIPP of The Pain and Headache Center of Anchorage and Wasilla, Alaska.

In conveying the award, WIP’s EPP Award Committee Chairman, Dr. P. Prithvi Raj said, “The Committee found the comprehensive multidisciplinary approach to pain practice employed by Clínica para o Tratamento da Dor to be of the highest standards. The impact of this university-affiliated pain center on the specialty of pain practice is evident in the interventional techniques offered, physician education and training, cutting-edge research and the status of the pain center as a regional referral center of Brazil, and its international reputation for contributions that promote the advancement of the science and practice standards of pain medicine.“

The EPP Award program, established in 2010 by the World Institute of Pain, recognizes pain centers that demonstrate the highest standards of pain practice around the world. Varying levels of recognition are attainable, including specialization in a particular area of clinical pain practice, multidisciplinary clinical pain practice, and comprehensive recognition that encom-passes all dimensions of pain management including cutting-edge research.

EPP Awards have been conferred on 22 pain centers in 12 countries. To qualify for the award, an online application is com-pleted by or on behalf of the pain center director. A site visit is conducted by an FIPP (Fellow of Interventional Pain Practice) member of WIP’s inspector’s panel. The EPP Award Committee exercises its due diligence in the determination of each award given, in accordance with WIP’s guidelines for EPP Award recognition.
