Curriculum aims to ensure children...✓ Become fl uent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practise with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately

✓ Reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justifi cation or proof using mathematical language

✓ Can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions

Helping you to apply the new curriculumThe overall aim for maths in the National Curriculum is to provide a high-quality mathematics education and in doing so, providing a foundation for understanding the world, the ability to reason mathematically, an appreciation of the beauty and power of mathematics, and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject.

Our guide includes key products to help you get to grips with the new National Curriculum and its assessment in your classroom. The range in this guide has been selected to help you interpret the new curriculum for the classroom and to ensure your pupils gain a full understanding of the subject.

We asked our curriculum expert Sue Hackman to review our Maths products in light of the new curriculum. Sue was the Chief Adviser on School Standards to several Secretaries of State at the DfE between 2006-2013. Some of her responsibilities included improvement, pedagogy, catch-up programmes as well as the core subjects. Prior to joining the department she worked as an adviser in a Local Authority, and her teaching experience spans all Key Stages.
