Note:

Tom Wright (1902-1981) was born in Scotland. He emigrated to Australia in 1913 or 1914 and was apprenticed in the sheet metal working trade at the age of fourteen.

He joined the Communist Party of Australia in 1923. In December 1924 he was appointed Financial Secretary of the Party. He was General Secretary of the CPA from December 1925 till 1929 and continued to occupy positions on the Central Committee of the Party after 1929. (He resigned from the CPA in 1971.) In 1927 he was included in a delegation from the Labor Council of NSW which travelled to China and the Soviet Union. He visited the Soviet Union again in 1952 & 1969, China in 1952, and in 1960 was the first Australian trade unionist to visit Cuba after the defeat of the Batista regime by the Castro forces.

Wright was on the NSW Branch Executive of the Sheet Metal Workers' Union from 1924. He was the NSW Branch Secretary, 1936-1972, and Federal President of the Union, 1940-1972. He pioneered the amalgamations of the SMWU with the Jewellers' and Stove Makers' Unions in the 1930s and 1940s and contributed to the formation of the Amalgamated Metal Workers' Union. At the time of his retirement in 1972 he was the NSW State President and National Vice-President of the Amalgamated Metal Workers Union.

He was a promoter of the ACTU in 1926-1927, was the Sheet Metal Working Union's delegate from (at least) 1938 to 1972, serving on the ACTU Executive for many years and on its Shipbuilding Sub-Committee, 1946-1963. He was actively involved on the Executive of the NSW Labor Council for an almost unbroken period from the 1920s till 1972. In 1943 he was a foundation member of the Metal Trades Federation on which he was a Sheet Metal Working Union delegate until his retirement.

Tom Wright played a substantial part in the long campaign to achieve equal pay for women and was active in campaigns on Aboriginal rights having written an influential pamphlet on the subject ion 1939. Tom Wright was an Alderman to the Sydney City Council, for two terms, 1954-1959, elected on a Communist ticket.

[Frank Bollins, "Veteran Trade Union Leader Dies", Metal Worker, Feb 1981]

Mary Wright (1904-1993) was born in Sydney and introduced to radical politics by her father. She began work in a chocolate factory in 1919 when living with her sister in Glebe. At age 17 she married John Lamm, a seaman and waterside worker and commenced having a family at once. Her second child died of gastroenteritis. By 1926 she had a family

of two boys and one girl. At that time she became involved with the Militant Women's Group, based at the Trades Hall. The group was led by Hettie Weitzel and included Annie Jssacs, Clarice Irwin, Edna Nelson, Jean Thompson and Joy Barrington. As part of the group she gave support to Timber Workers in Sydney during the lockout in 1929 and in that year she joined the Communist Party of Australia.

The Militant Women's Group was dissolved in 1930 and its Party members went in a number of directions. Mary Wright canvassed and distributed the Workers Weekly in Glebe and was a relatively successful communist candidate in the State elections in Anandale in 1930. She was a founder of the International Women's Day celebrations in Sydney and in 1936 President of the first Sydney IWD Committee. She was involved in the formation of the Council of Action for Equal Pay in 1937 and became a State Council member of the United Associations of Women, taking part in drawing up the Women's Charter of equal rights. She was an active member of the New Housewives' Association and has been a prominent member of its successor, the Union of Australian Women, since it was formed in 1950. In 1953 Mary and Tom Wright moved to Bankstown. Mary became President of the Bankstown Branch of the UAW and through her initiative the Bankstown Council has annually held an IWD luncheon for women's organisations since 1976. Mary resigned from the CPA with Tom in 1971 and joined the new Socialist Party of Australia.
