CATHERINE’S DIVINE MISSION

After the [Savior] of men, the Lord God Jesus Christ, had sated this His bride with delights; after He had trained her in spiritual warfare with so many combats, and endowed her with excellent gifts by imparting to her an extraordinary doctrine; then, not wishing such a light to remain hidden under a bushel, but desiring that she should be a city set on a hill, visible to all, making full use of the talents He had given her, He called to her and said, “Open to me…” etc. By this He meant: Open, by ministering to them, the doors of souls, that I may enter into them. Clear the way for my sheep, that they may come and graze freely. Open, again, to me (that is to say, to my [honor]), your casket of heavenly treasure—containing both doctrines and graces—that it may be poured into the laps of the faithful. Open to me, you who are by conformity of nature my sister, by intimate charity my friend, by simplicity of mind my dove, by purity of body and soul my immaculate one. To all these things the holy virgin responded with perfect fidelity. She told me in confession that, when by the Lord’s command she was obliged to leave her cell and go and talk to anyone, she felt such a sharp pain in her heart that it seemed as though it was about to break, and that no one except the Lord would have been able to make her do it. A MINDSET OF SERVICE There’s a lot of traveling, delivering, and visiting going on in our readings today. In Genesis Abraham cares for the needs of three mysterious travelers. The psalm responds, celebrating the kind of righteousness that Abraham practices. Then, in his letter to the Colossians, Saint Paul describes his own ministry as almost like a delivery service: he, God’s steward, brings the word of God to their community. Finally, Luke’s Gospel shares the well-known story of Mary and Martha, and the different ways they welcome Jesus into their home. Amid all this com-ing and going, we are invited to pay attention to the ways we tend to the needs of others. Each of us can ask, How am I pre-sent to God and others in my life? Copyright © J. S. Signs of a battered child can include repeated bruising or bruising in unusual places, broken bones, scratches, and other injuries. Even if you do not see physical abuse happening, such injuries may be signs that a child is in danger in his or her own home. You should report any suspicious injuries or symptoms to a local child protective services agency — that report could save a child’s life.
