a new Logo, new emaIL and anew websITe

Over the past several weeks we have been transitioning to our new logo, a new email format and soon, to a new website!

The new website will allow members to create their own gallery on-line; link it to their own site; post blogs, events, schedules, upcoming receptions, etc.; see infor-mation about local art activities in the Bay Area; and more. It’s much more interactive than our current site.

So, when will the new website go on-line? It’s been built and has gone through most of its testing, but we need a webmaster. The LAA is seeking a volunteer (or even better, two or three volunteers for support and back-up) to manage the maintenance of the site. The webmas-ter will make routine changes to the site as necessary (like keeping the plug-ins current), update information (like uploading the current membership database), and make layout changes if required. The site has been cre-ated using WordPress and associated plug-ins, so the webmaster needs to have a working understanding of that application.

If you are interested in becoming the LAA webmaster, express your interest to Donna Arganbright at [email protected]. And THANK YOU in advance!

Open Studios is October 10th and 11th. Registration is open until August 1st. I hope that you will participate and will encourage any artistic neighbors or friends to join LAA and to be a part of Open Studios as well. I know I am recruiting neighbors and friends whom I think would enjoy being a part of this event.

We had a wonderful reception for our art show on June 6th at the Lindsay Dirkx Brown Gallery in San Ramon. The show was beautifully hung and complimented all of our work. Thank you to Pam McCauley for her hard work in making this show happen and for putting on the reception.

We also look forward to the Piedmont Center for the Arts Exhibit coming up from August 22nd to September 27th.

Keep spreading the word about LAA. We want to see the arts flourish in our communities.

Don’t forget about Open Studios 2015. We are getting a steady stream of participants but we still need more artists to join us October 10th & 11th from 11 am to 4 pm at participating artists’ studios. If you are not able to open your studio to the public, we can group several artists in one location; this increases foot traffic and sales.

We want to encourage all of our members to partici-pate because it is an excellent opportunity to share your work with the public. Open Studios allows you to focus on the presentation of your art work and the feedback from your visitors is invaluable.

The Moraga Art Gallery presents “Precision Beauty”, a new show featuring works created in the artistic tradi-tions of Japan and China. The show opened June 17th and will run until August 22nd.

Jewelry artist Kuniko Kay Nitta of Walnut Creek draws inspira-tion from the simple aesthetic beauty of Japanese nature. She specializes in “cabochons,” semi-precious stones that are cut, shaped, and ground to re-veal their embedded colors and unique patterns. Her carefully-chosen stones, some enhanced with beads, are adorned or expertly wrapped with delicate silver and gold wire to make one-of-a-kind pendants, pins, and earrings.

Also featured are paintings by Taiwan-born artist Bing-Jib Huang, internationally-re-nowned master of an innovative, contemporary style of Chinese calligraphy. He enriches the meaning of his Chinese charac-ters by adding colorful symbols and graphics, many containing hidden messages that engage viewers’ imagination and in-crease their enjoyment. A resi-dent of the Washington, D.C. area, he has exhibited his work, in Beijing, Cairo, Florence, and

London, and now - Moraga.

Fifteen member artists and several guest artists of the gallery have paintings, photographs, ceramics, jew-elry, hand-painted silk scarves, and finely-crafted wood turned bowls on display. The gallery’s hours are Wednesday through Sunday from noon to 5 pm. For more information, go to www.MoragaArtGallery.com, or call 925-376-5407.

Nicole Wakeman will be showing at the Jennifer Perlmutter Gallery, 3260 Mt. Diablo Boulevard, Lafayette, through August.

Nicole’s work celebrates connection with our emotion, our history, or a deep sense of place. Her paintings are thresholds, high chromatic abstractions, designed to interact and create a personal experience for each viewer. The visual energy and complexity in her work springs forth from the alchemy of color, texture, move-ment and depth.

Rashmi Rajesh will be showing her work at Diablo Valley College Library through August 22nd. There will be an artist’s reception Saturday, August 22nd from 1 to 3 pm.

Rashmi is a self-taught artist originally from India but now living in San Ramon. Her love for art started with pen-cil sketching. She is passionate about painting in oils and acrylics, trying to recreate the beauti-ful colors that sur-round us every day and she loves to paint a variety of subjects including seascapes, land-scapes and florals.

Her artwork has been exhibited at the San Ramon Library, Dougherty Station Community Center, Pleasant Hill Art & Wine festival, Bedford Gallery in Walnut Creek, Pleasant Hill Senior Center, Diablo Valley College Library in Pleasant Hill and Creekside Arts festival in Clayton.

If you’d like to contact Rashmi Rajesh or see more of her work, visit www.RashmisArtCarte.com.

The Diablo Valley College is located at 321 Golf Club Road in Pleasant Hill. The Library hours are Monday-Thursday 7:45 am to 4:30 pm and Friday 10 am to 3:30 pm.

ity for strong gestural paint impressions that capture movement and emotion. She pairs vivid colors with rhyth-mic brush strokes and textured collage. She is intrigued by faces, figures, silhouettes and shadow shapes that she can augment with mark making.

Marian Sims Harris is a printmaker and pas-tel artist. When print-ing, she loves painting directly onto the plate, rolling colors on, and using stencils, or applying ink to objects or torn/cut textured papers, still striving for texture and relief. She also has discov-ered the gorgeous, vi-brant colors of paint-ing with soft pastels, and is delighted to find she can combine pas-tels, monotypes, and even colored pencils to create intriguing im-ages, textures, reliefs… more unending possibilities to obtain richness and depth in her work!

A California native, Harris lives in Walnut Creek and also plays fiddle and sings in several East Bay roots music/bluegrass bands.

The theme of the current show at Town Hall Theater is “A Contemporary Quarter” through July 18th.

Kerima Swain works primarily with oil and acrylic. She enjoys a wide variety of subjects that include landscapes and flowers. Exhibiting since 2006, Swain has won many awards in local ju-ried shows. Swain grew up in Taiwan and immi-grated with her family

to the United States when she was 17.

Donna Arganbright, a pot-ter for many years, takes a break from her pottery to share some of her monotype prints. Arganbright finds that working in a different medium helps to keep her work in clay fresh and vigor-ous. She hopes to use some of the printing techniques she learned with clay.

After 25 years of teaching art to el-ementary, middle school and high school students, she now has time to focus on her own art work in clay and other media.

Jan Lainoff, during her career as a Speech Pathologist, explored art as a mean of self-expression with those clients unable to vocalize their thoughts, feelings and choices. Now retired, Lainoff continues to explore art for her own self-expression and growth. She prefers the challenge of mixed media, demonstrating a procliv-

The Lafayette Art Gallery recently had an interesting request.

A gentleman stopped by to say he would like to com-mission an artist to design artwork for a monument for him and his wife. The monument will be 28”x20” and flat. It would contain the usual information and include artwork with a nature theme. It might even be slightly whimsical.

If you are interested in pursuing this rather unique op-portunity, contact Bill Loorz at 925-837-7914 or email him at [email protected]

Nancy Hartley has her work showing through summer in two venues - at the Jennifer Perlmutter Gallery, 3620 Mt. Diablo Boulevard, and at the Sotheby’s Real Estate office at 3725 Mt. Diablo Boulevard, both in Lafayette.

Nancy paints with the intention of creating an uplifting experience. Using color, shape, and design, her goal is to achieve a bright moment, for the viewer, and herself. She hopes that her work puts a smile on your face, and warmth in your heart.

Beginning August 1st, artists Suzun Almquist, Jeanette Baird, Susan Bonebakker, Ellen Reintjes, Joanne Taeuffer, Sharon Tama and Marcy Wheeler will have an exhibit at the Orinda Bookstore, 276 Village Square.

A reception to mark the month-long exhibit will be held Sunday, August 2nd from 1:00 to 3:00 pm. You are invited to come by, enjoy the paintings and discussion with the artists, indulge in some refreshments, and per-haps peruse the fine collection of books available at the bookstore.

The Bay Area Studio Artists is a group of seven artists whose style is as varied as their subject matter, and who have painted together since 2010. Their group exhibits have appeared locally and in the Napa Valley.

The newest show at the Lafayette Art Gallery is titled "H2O" and opened June 30th. It will run through August 29th and will focus on - your guessed it - water! Whether it is the use of water in the artistic process, water as subject matter, or the current absence of water, our tal-ented group of local artists will showcase their works related to the theme of water.

In addition, Bonehead’s Barbecue is now open, sharing deck space with the Gallery. So come on down, have some great Bar-B-Que, and check out the Gallery’s new collection of affordable, high-quality paintings, ceram-ics, glass works, sculpture and jewelry.

Since it’s inception in 1999, the Lafayette Art Gallery has presented over 120 different shows of local artist’s works, and continues to extend the member artists’ ex-pertise to dozens of community groups and non-profit organizations.

Lafayette Gallery is looking for new members, particularly functional ceramics, glass, and small sculpture. Lafayette Gal-lery is a co-op gallery. All members contribute to the running of the gallery, and prospective members are juried for admit-tance. If you are interested, please contact Judy Feins for more

information, at [email protected]

A big thank you to Pamela McCauley and Lauma Johnson for organizing and coordinating the Lamorinda Arts Alliance Exhibit at the Lindsay Dirkx Brown Gallery in San Ramon. The show included over sixty pieces ranging from Abstraction to Realism and included acrylics, ceramics, oils, pastels, photography, sculpture and watercolor.

Participants were honored to be chosen to display their beautiful artwork at such a beautiful gallery. For those of you who were not able to visit the exhibit, it definite-ly did have a wow factor in the two-story, light filled atrium.

Pam and Lauma extend their thanks to those who helped make the exhibit come together: Arlynn Bloom, Mark Coffey, Sherry Cullison, George Ehrenhaft, Carla Gelbaum, Olga Jusidman, Jan Lainoff, Ruth McMillan and Linda Yoshizawa. Pam especially wants to thank Cindy Raleigh for the time she dedicated to help hang the show.
