Downey Fly Fishers

Chad SchielChad Schiel was born and raised in Colorado where he has been fly fishing since age 6. At age 18 he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and served five honorable years as an intelligence analyst. During his time in service he introduced many of his fellow Marines to the art and sport of fly fishing.

Chad currently lives in Foothill Ranch, California with his wife Jackie. He is the owner of Emerge Fly Fishing Specialties and spends a great deal of his time instructing new anglers, developing warm water tactics, and inno-vating new fly patterns. He has created an entire line of brilliantly developed and creative flies for Rainy’s Flies and Supplies out of Logan Utah and his fly patterns can be found in fly shops throughout the country and abroad.

To date Chad has caught thirty four different species of fish on a flyrod. His travels have given him the opportu-nity to fish in both salt and freshwater environments. He is a self-taught fly tier and angler, who enjoys sharing his passion and experience with others.

The 2010 Fred Hall ShowDowney Fly Fishers had a booth at the Fred Hall Long Beach show for the 2nd year in a row.

The following week, there were several new guests at our general meeting (2 joined the club) and 16 new people at our Beginning Fly Tying Class who had visited our booth at the show. The youngest person in the fly tying class is a boy in the 4th grade. After the first class, the father bought him a beginners fly ty-ing kit. The kid practiced all week long!

Several of the people in the fly tying class also expressed interest in our rod building class.

Our bylaws require that we offer these classes to the public for free as our way of giving back and to promote the sport.

InspirationBrian Matthews is truly one of the great fly tiers and speakers. When watching Brian at the Fred Hall show he truly inspired the children who came to find out what fly fishing was all about. While I was striking out at trying to get phone numbers from some of the hot girls at the Fred Hall Show I realized two things. Hot girls don’t go to fishing conventions and Brian is one of the most talented fly tiers anyone has ever seen.

To many people who walked by they got to see Brian grab a handful of strange materials create amazing works of art with it. In addition, not only did he create these works of art, but he was inspiring others to take up the sport of fly fishing as well. Like the kid on the cover, many children came by and al-though some will never pick up a fly rod, Brian did inspire some people to take up this life altering activity as they watched Brian wrap loops of colorful thread and dubbing to eventually create a very life-like insect.

I know Brian, being the modest guy, does not get enough credit for all the work he does.

In fact, when Brian was tying, I saw a really really hot girl that came by to see what he was tying and like many she was amazed. After that, I was truly inspired.

So Brian, you’re awesome!!! And I’m sorry I spread all those rumors about you. Just kidding.

April 17 – 18, 2010 Bass Fishing - Colorado River/CanalsMay TBD Largemouth/Panfish Jenks LakeMay 15 – 16, 2010 Mammoth #1 June 12, 2010 Local Surf Fishing

Spring is Here! It’s time to head out to Blythe and chase smallmouth bass in the Colorado River and irrigation canals before it gets too hot.

For beginners, this is a great opportunity to “get your feet wet”. Actually, you don’t even have to wade. There is easy access to the water and no obstructions to spoil your back cast. Blythe is approximately a 3.5 to 4 hour drive from the Los Angeles area. You can stay overnight in one of the many local motels or a campground.

In addition, Jenks Lake will be opening up in May. This is a great spot for beginning fly fishers to catch small largemouth bass and panfish. This trip is about 1 hour from the Los Angeles area.

It’s also time to start thinking about fishing the lakes and streams in the Mammoth area.

If you are interested in attending any of these outings, please sign up at the general meeting or contact Carl Laski at (714) 995-4219.

Recent Fish Tales

In October I had a meeting near Cancun so I booked a one day trip at a lodge near Ascencion Bay, about a 3 hour van ride from Cancun. To my great surprise and delight I was fortunate to have a grand slam. Here are some photos.

by Dr. Ray Sugiyama

We passed by some hill billy town and saw from a distance a group of people doing Tai-Chi, then we thought wow dude, these people are really cultured. Then as we got closer it turned out to be some druggies trying to keep their balance when they walked. Fishing was still a little slow in Blythe, but Chad managed to catch one and got others to chase his fly. Although he caught only one, it was his first ever in fly fishing and was more excited than a teen-ager getting their first driver’s license. Found An Old Friend on Facebook

The week before Fred Hall, I got online and found an old friend of mine on Facebook which is a website to keep up with people. Chad and I haven’t seen each other in 10 years and then we decided to meet up and go to Blythe for some fly fishing. This 4 hour trip went very well as Chad and I never broke the number one rule between two dudes, which is to never talk about relation-ships unless they are jokes about our girlfriends. When we got to Blythe, I made my second cast into the current and within seconds I caught probably the biggest smallmouth in my life. Af-ter that I spent the rest of the time teaching Chad how to fly fish as we continued to explore areas from Blythe to Palos Verde, 20 miles south of the 10 freeway.

Reel News and AnnouncementsReel AnnouncementsPresident’s Message: April

I want to let you all know that the fly tying class is going very well. We have about 12-14 people enrolled. This coming week we will be tying a wooly bugger. Many of the club members have come out to help with the class. A big thank you to all of you. We also have 11 people signed up for the rod building class. This year Allen Reising will be conducting the class. I, of course, will be available to help. On May 1 in Carpentaria, on Santa Clause Lane there will be a one-fly surf tournament run by our old friend Al Q. For further information go to: http://onesurffly.com/ I would encourage members to go this tournament. It should be a fun outing with trophies, etc. The trophies will be given out after the tournament at the restaurant adjacent to The Artful Angler Fly Shop. The restaurant is known for great barbeque. I, myself, am planning to go.
