SERVING DOWNEY AND THE SURROUNDING COMMUNITIES SINCE 1951

American Morse Code will be the topic for Septem-ber’s meeting

At the September meeting our own Tom VanBuskirk, K6TV will be showing a DVD entitled "Telegraphy - How it Changed the World".

It was put together by members of the Morse Telegraph Club. It opens with a train wreck and goes on to a love story. What more could we ask for? Tom met some of the folks that were involved with this endeavor and it is for real. He will bring a few items and try to answer any questions about the American Morse Code format. Tom is ex-president of the Southern California Chapter of the Morse Telegraph Club.

So come to the meeting and hear the differences be-tween American Morse Code and the International Morse Code now used by Hams all over the world. Any-one who has an interesting old code key, ‘bug’ or even an actual Railroad Morse Code sounder set should bring it to enhance this topic.

Luncheon is Coming!

Mark your calendars now for our annual luncheon on Sunday, November 15th. Details to come.

Elections are Coming! Elections will soon be upon us. The nominating committee already has a number of nominees for various positions, but we still need someone to step up to the plate for Treasurer, VP Ways and Means, and VP of Programs. Even in those positions where a member has been nomi-nated it doesn’t mean you (yes, you) can’t add your name to the list. No experience is needed, just a willingness to support your club and to fulfill the duties of the position. The nominating committee will soon be calling all mem-bers to try and fill any vacancies. So keep an open mind about serving your club.

ARRL Membership and Renewals

Just a reminder to current club members and new members, the DARC will accept new memberships to the American Ra-dio Relay League as well as renewals of memberships. We can provide the forms. When you renew through the club, the club receives a club commission from the ARRL. We know that many members’ ARRL dues generally become due in Au-gust because of our past practices in hosting ARRL night at club meetings in August. Questions about this program may be directed to Arlene Schwartz, KE6GFI, [email protected].

• Informative and hard-hitting Product Reviews of the newest radios and accessories from hand-held and mobile FM radios, to home-station transceivers, antennas and even shortwave radios.

• Advertisements. You'll find everything from full-color pages introducing new radios to a large classified ad section.

• Each month's Coming Conventions and Hamfest Calendar columns show you who's getting together every month at Hamfests, conventions and swap meets in your area.

• The Public Service column keeps you up to date on the public service efforts hams are providing around the country and shows you how you can join in this satisfying aspect of our hobby.

• Digital Dimension covers news in the Amateur Radio digital world and includes information on useful Web sites.

• The New Ham Companion section is filled with features and how-to information just for beginning hams. There's no jargon-filled "tech talk"--just straightforward, easy-to-understand articles designed to get you on the air doing the things you like best.

Whether you're interested in contesting, DXing, or radios, accessories and antennas you can build at home, QST covers them all: New trends and the latest technology, fiction, humor, news, club activities, rules and regulations, special events, packet radio, and much more.

September 2009 DX

By Mike Gauthier, K6ICS

This month’s column is coming from Nashville, Tennessee. I will have been out of the country and out of Cali-fornia for better than 7 weeks. I will be home by the time this is published. I find it very hard to write while on the road, so this issue of the Q5 DX column will be in a little different format.

September Propagation Outlook

Still there are no real sunspots. So, there will be little change in propagation. As we head for fall, there will be a reduction of background noise. That is the best that can be done ‘till we start seeing real sunspots that last more than a few hours.

September DX
