Chuey Duarte began giving back to the Douglas community in 1996 and has not stopped since.

“My wife and I got involved with our youth group at St. Luke’s right after we got married in 1996,” he said. “We started there, then developed our own group where we had high school age kids that we were working with. We did that for about four years.”

For the last seven years he has dressed up as the Cat in the Hat in celebration of Dr. Seuss and goes to different elementary schools and reads to the kids.

He began volunteering as a coach once his children started getting involved in the dif-ferent leagues in Douglas. “I’ve been involved in Douglas Termite, Douglas Little League, Douglas AYSO as well as with the schools,” he said.

For the last year and a half Duarte has run the Douglas AYSO stepping up to keep the program in Douglas.

He also coaches several youth soccer and baseball travel teams and credits his wife Joni for her support.

“You want to help develop these kids to become future Douglas Bulldogs and if it takes them further, then even better,” Duarte said. “I love what I’m doing. I love taking to the kids to tournaments and watching them grow and develop. It’s fun developing that teamwork and camaraderie that comes with it. I think sports are a great equalizer for the kids for setting them up and getting them ready for life. ”

“THE BIGGEST THING I GET OUT OF IT AS FAR AS SPORTS IS SEEING THE KIDS AS THEY GET OLDER STILL CALL ME ‘COACH’,” HE ADDED. “THAT’S SO MUCH RESPECT.”

“The other day, while cleaning out a closet, I came across my Border Brats hat. That early 90’s DGASA girls’ softball team was the original Border Brats in Douglas. The team fi nished runner up in the state tournament, I have the Dispatch article in a fi le somewhere, I’m sure,” Vicky Merritt said. “The years I served DGASA were a great deal of fun for me and my daughter. Every organization that I’ve volunteered for has provided many great memories for me, and my family.” Merritt has been giving back to Douglas more than 40 years. During this time she has been a Douglas Girls Armature Softball Association, founding board member and past president, Douglas Little League, secretary for the Douglas Chamber of Commerce, Douglas Centennial Committee, City of Douglas Design Review Board, past president and secretary of the Douglas Rotary Club, Elk’s Club Christmas boxes and a volunteer yoga instructor. In addition she’s a member of other organizations that are not service organizations. She supports other organizations in Douglas such as Future Farmers of America, Knights of Columbus, Douglas Unifi ed School District activities, and sports teams. “We’re a small community and we must all work together for the greater good,” she said. Merritt is currently volunteering for Douglas ARC as a board member and cake auction chair. She’s a 4-H leader for the Bulldog 4-H club at the Douglas High School land lab. Merritt also services as an advisory board member for DHS DECA, President of the advisory board of the DHS Land Lab, and President of the board for City of Douglas Housing Authority. She’s also board member for Chiricahua Pediatric Council and serves on the Leadership Team for Edward Jones Investments; this is a volunteer position in her company.

National Volunteer Week is

April 21-27

The Douglas Police Department Explores advisors give their free time for the purpose of helping others.

The Explores were designed to stimulate young men and women to study for careers in the law enforcement field. It also provides a positive approach to prevention of juvenile delinquency through a variety of organized activities re-quiring a high standard of conduct.

Officer Maria Cuevas, a DPD Explore advisor is also a coach for DGSL and AYSO.

“I like to be around my kids as much as possible, I like to help my kids and other kids learn and enjoy sports so they don’t get into anything they shouldn’t,” she said. “You see the kids more motivated to go to practice rather than get-ting in trouble. I feel I am helping them make better deci-sions in their lives.”

Officer Oscar Ortega helps run the Explores program and has also started the Douglas football camp. “I want to help

the kids in the community to get to better places in their lives,” Ortega said. “It’s very important for the kids to have role models to look up to, that way they can get on the right track. I like seeing the kids have fun and learning at the same time.”

Officer Martin Villa is new to volunteer work but has taken to it quickly.

“I saw that there was a need to have an activity to keep our children busy after school and try to get them off the streets,” he said. “I get a lot of satisfaction watching them have fun, watching them start from zero and see them grow along the way.”

Jeannette Quijada who was an Explorer herself for six years enjoys working with the kids. She also is the vice presi-dent of the Social Concerns Club at Cochise College.

“I did the explorer program and then I felt I needed to give the community back so I started volunteering as an advisor,” Quijada said.

Alex Boneo, a Douglas Coalition employee, helps people through her very eventful job. “I go to all of these meeting representing the Douglas Coalition and I’m able to incorporate my love for helping through it.”

Boneo is on the Douglas for Stronger Family’s Council, Doug-las area community fund, the Voice of Douglas, she will be starting up the Bi-National Council soon, and she still has time to serve on the PTSO at her kid’s school.

“I grew up in Agua Prieta and there are not many opportuni-ties as I have received here,” she said.

The first time she helped out at one of her many organiza-tions she felt a sense of fulfillment and excitement she had never experienced. “The first time I felt their excitement and they were so grateful for the help it felt so nice,” Boneo said.

A lot of the volunteer work Boneo does in the community involves substance abuse, health care and working with the youth on substance abuse prevention.

“In the past few years my eyes have opened to the possibili-ties of the things we can do as a community,” she said. “I love what I do, I love helping people. I feel like I make an impact in the community.”

The first time Boneo felt like she was making a real impact was a few years ago during a youth group. She had one of the par-ticipants come up to her and tell her that she changed her life.

“She told me ‘you know Alex if it wasn’t for you honestly I would be doing drugs I probably have died already, you changed my life.’ It made me cry because I never thought that the work I was doing was so important to them,” Boneo re-membered.

The mother of two sometimes gets a little overwhelmed with everything on her plate but then she remembers how impor-tant her work is to people.

“Sometimes I get tired, or I’m unsure of the things I’m doing then I hear those little things and those little thank yous mean so much,” she added.

“IN THE PAST FEW YEARS MY EYES HAVE OPENED TO THE

POSSIBILITIES OF THE THINGS WE CAN DO AS A COMMUNITY,”

SHE SAID. “I LOVE WHAT I DO, I LOVE HELPING PEOPLE.

I FEEL LIKE I MAKE AN IMPACT IN THE COMMUNITY.”

Gina Tartaglia was raised to appreciate what was given to her and her siblings. “To give others what you can,” she said.

Both her mom and dad have always been there to help and support in what-ever organization or project she has been involved in.

“We all back each other up and support one and other,” she said.

Since her two oldest children were little Tartaglia has been involved with T-ball, softball, Pop Warner, AYSO, and last summer she helped develop the Douglas Youth Basketball League.

“I started helping in the schools I did ‘project self-esteem’ when my kids were in elementary. In the 90’s until now,” Tartaglia said. “I enjoy helping kids, I enjoy seeing them grow in whatever they do, I hope to influence them in a positive way, to teach

them that you have to give and to try to do your best and hopefully you help some-one along the way in a little way.”

Tartaglia’s parents, Danny Sr. and Geor-gina Ortega, have been huge role models for their children. Mrs. Ortega was Dan-ny Ortega’s Jr. den mother; she has also helped with girl scouts and at St. Luke’s.

Mr. Ortega has been closely involved with many organizations for over 48 years. These organizations include the Lions Club, Chamber of Commerce, Douglas Merchants, the Douglas IDA and Douglas EDC.

“I like to be involved, I believe in our com-munity,” Ortega said. “I get the satisfaction that we are accomplishing something. We are proud that our children grew up with the same kind of commitment to the com-munity.”

Caitlyn Kramer began giving back to the community at a very young age.

“She was out there with me at about six years old help-ing pick up garbage for a clean-up day,” her very proud mother Susan Kramer said.

Caitlyn, a freshman at DHS, spends a lot of her time volunteering at the House of Hope, a women’s shelter in Douglas.

“I think it’s really important for young people to get out and help because the community does so much for us,” Caitlyn said. “We need to give back to the community and help out with other organizations that in return help other people.”

She also volunteers for the FFA at DHS and is a Girl Scout. “I work around my school schedule volunteering as much as I can still making my school work a top priority,” she added.

Caitlyn’s mom Susan has been a great inspiration on giving back to the community.

“I just get that feeling that I am helping out and giving back to the community even though it’s in a little way it still helps the community,” Kramer said.

“I THINK IT’S REALLY IMPORTANT FOR YOUNG PEOPLE TO GET OUT AND HELP BECAUSE THE COMMUNITY DOES SO MUCH FOR US,” CAITLYN SAID.

How she’s able to juggle these respon-sibilities? “Not having a job enables me to help and focus more on volunteer

work,” she said. “Also a big advantage is that some volunteer work is school re-lated.”

Hughes enjoys helping the communi-ty “I feel that I can make a positive impact in my community,” she added. “I love be-ing able to make a difference.”

Her parents Jesus and Alvina Hughes have and continue to be her biggest sup-porters. “They’ve enabled me to become who I am today and are behind me one hundred percent,” she said. “They push me to be my best, and that includes help-ing our community through volunteer work.”

Mackenzie Kimbro a junior at DHS, volunteers for the Douglas Turkey Trot Run/Walk for the Cure, the Malpai Bor-derlands Group, Future Farmers of Amer-ica, and the Douglas ARC Mother’s Day Cake Auction.

“I do volunteer work because of the satisfaction that I get when I see how happy people are during and after the event or project,” she said. “I love being able to do my part to give back to the community we live in and to help make it a better place.”

Kimbro has learned to balance both school and volunteering. “I’ve learned over the years how to effectively bal-ance my academics and extracurricular

activities with the volunteer activities,” she said.

Her family has been a big support when it comes to this balance as well as helping her to execute her plans.

“My family has had a huge impact on my volunteering because I was raised to appreciate what I have; not take any-thing for granted, and help others as much when possible,” Kimbro said. “Any activity that I do is a group effort, and my family is always a part of that larger group.”

“I also appreciate that I have been in 4-H and FFA because these organiza-tions really like doing volunteer work,” she added.

Gary Clark was pushed into community service at a young age. He received two speeding tickets in one week and was given community service at DARC.

Once he got a feel for it he chose to stay. “I felt that there was a challenged here,” he said.

Clark, caring for the people he works with, coached for the Special Olympics for over 35 years.

“Several years ago when I was coaching Special Olympics, I had a relay team I worked and worked with these individu-als and we ended up coming in first place at state and it was such a good feeling,” he said.

He gave up volunteering for the Special Olympics last year to devote his time to other organizations in Douglas. Clark now is on the board of the Douglas Housing Corporation I & II, the Council on Aging, and the City of Douglas Transporta-tion committee.

“My philosophy is if you live in a community put back into the community or leave because you don’t put back into the community you’re taking away from it,” Clark said. “Giving back can be done in a number of things.”

He also volunteered as a little league coach, termite coach; his wife has also volunteered her time as a den mother for boy scouts.

“I would hope I made an impact on this community, I know it has made an impact on my life giving is receiving. I feel good about giving to other people. That’s internal gratifica-tion,” he added. “No matter what you think you’re not the Lone Ranger out there, you need other people, everyone needs the support of people,”

Howard Henderson is a perfect example of, you don’t have to be born and raised in a town to make a difference.

Henderson came to Douglas in 1984 and since then he has been on the Chamber of Commerce, the Babe Ruth league, Pop Warner, he served on the board of directors at the state level and is currently a member of the Douglas IDA.

Howard is the voice you hear during DHS football, soccer and base-ball games coming to you from the radio.

“I have always felt that people should get involved in the commu-nity’s they live in,” Henderson said. “And try to make it a better place.”

Henderson hope’s he has made a positive impact on the Douglas Community.

“I get a sense of satisfaction, I feel good about myself and I feel good about the community,” Henderson added. “I think the community responds, you get out of it what you put into it.”

Fimbres has also found himself involved in one club or another. While at DHS he was the president of the Noblemen’s Club.

He has been a vast advocate for many of the Douglas Leagues. “I did Douglas Little League for 12 years, I have volun-teered for AYSO, Babe Ruth, Pop Warner, and I established T-ball back in 1988,” he said.

“I believe before you run, you have to walk, before you walk, you have to crawl, there were many kids that needed to start at the beginning, (in regards with T-Ball),” Shorty said.

The first year there were over 280 kids involved in T-ball, a league that to this date grows stronger every year.Shorty is also the current president for the Douglas Food Bank. “I was out golfing one day and someone told me they

needed help at the food bank. So I came to help, they made me a board member within a year I was the president,” Shorty said. “I get to meet a lot of people, by volunteering. When the kids graduate from high school or you see them now as adults and they come up to me and say ‘hey coach’, they remember things that I taught them or they remember something that we shared with them as a coach or just a mentor, that’s a good feeling.”

“There are people in our community that need help and it feels good to help them.” Shorty added.

Cox encourages every employee to volun-teer as individuals or as part of Cox Connects Day. Being an active, hands-on part of their com-munities is an integral part of the culture at Cox.

Manny Romero has done that and more. Romero volunteers for the Douglas Dispatch Easter egg hunt along with Wick Communica-tions.

He not only provides Easter baskets to give out but he is also on the field getting it ready for the hunt.

“I’ve been doing the Easter egg hunt for 10 years,” he said.

Romero also volunteers at the DARC Mother’s day cake auction, helping set up and donating items on behalf of Cox.

The Cox employee also sets up the movies at the park and the yearly car show held by the Douglas Street Rods at Castro Park.

“We volunteer through Cox to give back to the community,” Romero said. “I get that feel-ing that we are giving back, we are helping out the kids.”

We need to get more organizations and peo-ple involved, especially for the youth, he said. “It’s all about the youth.”

For the past four years Ken and Sandee Nelson have been running the Douglas Charger football and cheer league stepping up when the league was in need of a president and cheer coordinator.Together Ken and Sandee have helped make the league one of the most respected leagues around.Ken also has volunteered in the Douglas Little and T-Ball Leagues; he’s also president of the Youth Activity Fund for the City of Douglas.Sandee has helped in the same organizations as her husband in addition to helping out in the Douglas Girls Softball League.“We’ve volunteered in something ever since we arrived here eight years ago,” Ken said. “I do it because I get enjoyment out of putting it together and helping the kids by having a good organized activity that is safe,” Sandee said.Ken said he wants to make sure not only his kids but also the other kids in Douglas have fun while participating in youth activities.“It’s about the kids,” Sandee said. “I like having stuff for the kids to do. … I think it’s important for kids to feel like they’re a part of something.”Ken said especially in football he stresses, the kids are the important part.“We try to make sure they have a good time and a good experience,” he said.

Throughout the years we have realized our interde-pendence on each other; that we cannot just take but we must give as well; that if we are to go forward we must work together giving in any way we can.

Ginny Jordan has done this but to a different group in need, she gives back to animals specifically to cats and dogs.

At her home she currently has 11 dogs of all sizes, ages, and breeds. She also volunteers her time to the Douglas Animal Shelter during their clinic dates.

She began rescuing dogs 14 years ago with her old-est dog Annie.

“Never did I imagine in my biggest wildest dreams that I would rescue over 190 dog’s cause of Annie” she said.

The animals she is able to rescue she brings them home. Her goal then is to find them a good and forever home.

“I volunteer because I can’t bring in every dog,” she said. “I feel that if I volunteer during these clinics I’m not likely to bring any more dogs home.

She has also helped many elderly people take their pets to the vet; she does anything to help a dog or cat.

Volunteering to Jordan is a way of life; this is how she was raised by her parents Lupe and Ramon Jordan. Both her parents have been very involved in the com-munity.

“I belong to the Douglas Community, you’re sup-posed to give back,” Jordan said. “This is my way of giving back.”

Jordan believes that people think they grow up to be independent, but she feels this is wrong. We are interdependent on each other this is how the world was made” she said. “Even animals depend on each other they hunt together they take care of each other.”

She is also involved in other organizations in Douglas and feels that helping you neighbor is an essential part of life.

“You help your neighbors, because some day you will need the help,” she added. “It’s like in the poem, then they came for the Catholics, and I didn’t speak out because I wasn’t a Catholic. Then they came for me, and there was no one left to speak for me, you have to be there for others so others can be there for you.”

Jordan has worked in crisis centers in Tucson and some very stress jobs that can burn a person out.

“Jobs and careers burn you out, animals don’t burn you out, they don’t care what you look like, they give and they are grateful,” Jordan said. “I often get calls about animal problems and I don’t always have the answer or I can’t take care of all of the problems but the community can.”
