DFT runner
The DFT, also known as a Double-Flow Horizontal-Shaft Francis Turbine consists of a single spiral casing with stay vanes, two independent guide vane apparatuses directing flow in each-side of the double-runner and two draft tubes discharging water into the tailrace. The DFT can operate with one runner only (single-runner operation) or with both runners (double-runner operation).

The DFT turbine type it is of great importance for some “isolated” hydro power plants to allow turbine operation at low discharges in winter conditions to prevent freezing of the flow-passage system. Because operation is allowed down to about 15% of the unit’s maximum discharge, the DFT turbine is especially suitable for operation with very small discharge during the winter time (freezing prevention, powerhouse heating), for enabling long-term biological minimum discharge in the river or for example for smooth and high efficiency operation at part load where classical solution with one Francis runner is facing problems with pulsations due to formation of the draft tube vortex rope.
