double page spread inspiration

In this issue of Rock Sound the double page spread follows the stereotypical conventions of a heavy music magazine and therefore I intend to take influence for my own double page spread. This double page spread, featuring the alternative rock band A Day To Remember is conventional as it uses a large image which relates to the further conventions of a large header, a tagline, a stand first, a drop cap and other extra features such as pull quotes and varying fonts of varying colours and sizes. The image used spreads over onto both pages of the double spread and is dark and of an alternative nature. The lack of colour, the angle of the image and the darkness of the image connotes the idea of an alternative band. These lesser noticeable conventions combine with the facial expressions of the band (typical of shouting or screaming) which connotes the concept of volume. This helps to anchor the idea of a loud band musically. The fonts used are bold and standout considerably and are often in capitals, again conveying the idea of volume. In this double page spread, expletives are also used (eg. “This is fucked up!”)

Page 1: Double Page Spread Inspiration

Page 2: Double Page Spread Inspiration

This double page spread strongly connotes the conventions of a heavy metal band. The colours used are typical for dark/heavy music, as black and white is frequently used with hints of red. The fonts used (particularly the serif used) are very stereotypical of the type of music and therefore quickly show the genre without having to read the smaller print. As with most double page spreads a large header is used with a stand first and a large image taking up the majority of one of the pages. A drop cap is also used as typical for a double page spread as well as a large pull quote to give a small indication of the further text in the double page spread. The main image is also alternative as it follows typical conventions of rock musicians such as dark clothing, long hair and beards. Although stereotypical, it subconsciously

allows us to label the genre. Also there is the less subliminal element of the records on the wall which tells us directly that the article is relating to music, which then combines with the colours (and lack of) that are used, as well as the fonts and words used to give us the clear indication of a heavy metal band as well as following the conventions of a typical double page spread.

This particular double page connotes the music of a young pop punk band through the different conventions typically used in a double page spread. As before, the usual conventions are used such as a picture that takes up one of the pages, a pull quote, drop caps, a large header and a stand first. However these elements are altered to portray the genre of music as alternative. For a start we get the direct impression of a young pop punk band through the poses of the band as well as their apparent youth, then anchored by the header reading “teen spirit”. The splatters of blood on the header as well as the frequent use of the colour red are also very typical of an alternative music magazine and connote the genre of music that this particular music magazine is representing. The fonts used are also bold and capitalised to stand out and imply volume, which is then further implied through

the word “screaming” in the pull quote. Something unconventional that this double page uses is the extra information in the bottom right, under the header “what are Rolo Tomassi made of?”, this is meant as a kind of humour tool and therefore, along with the other elements of the magazine, appeal to a younger audience.
