Page 1: Double page spread 1

The title for this double page spread is the only thing that’s slanted. This is done to add something to the page due to the fact that everything else is in order and neat. As the title is in front of a lead singer screaming down the mic, it may show recklessness or chaos. It also gives something for the reader to look at whilst they’re reading the rest of the page.

The pictures featured are different sizes and are overlapping. The fact that DIY has done this shows that they don’t like to be completely neat and perfect and that there are elements of abstract in their magazine. When a reader scans over these images, some may be deemed more ‘important’ than others because some are bigger than others; therefore, some artists featured in these images could gain more popularity than others just from DIY’s choice of photo positioning.

Titles of the artist are bold, red and bigger then the text below them. This can be done so that the reader can scan over the page and search for artists they like. Readers would not want to search ages because people want something quick and interesting to look at, so the red text helps make the artist’s name stand out and makes the reader’s search faster.

Text is relatively small and easy to read. Considering DIY’s target audience, which is rebellious teens or young adults, they would not want to read heaps of text that includes daring vocabulary as teenagers may not be able to keep paying attention for that amount of time or understand some of the text. Therefore, DIY caters to their target audience.

DIY uses comedy in their article which can draw any kind of audience due to the fact that any type of audience can enjoy comedy, it just has to be a certain type of comedy. The use of comedy on this double page spread can be seen as immature or younger audience which fits DIY’s target market because they cater to younger audience that may be interested in music. “Chvrches talk their favourite… err, crisps?!”, this can show that the band may be a bit fun and not all serious and therefore drawing in an audience that may be young. DIY questions Chvrches with the ‘?!’ which may signify that Chvrches may be rebellious, attracting markets that are rebellious, i.e. teenagers or young people.

Red can signify that it may be more important than the rest of the article. However, as there isn’t as much red as there is text on a plain background, it shows that the red could be an introduction before the full article takes place. Either, showing that the text is more important than others or just an introduction to the rest of the article, are both good ways of drawing the reader in. the red would draw the reader in because red signifies, danger, love, passion, blood, love, etc. These are all exciting connotations that the reader may be interested in due to the fact that the target market is teenagers and teenagers want excitement in their life. Also, red is one of the three colours that generic magazines would globally use (red, black and white). Black and white work superbly together and red is an easy colour to ‘accessorise’ the cover or article with, implying the above connotations.
