DC Soybean Experience – 2010 to Present

• Initiated Syngenta DC Soybean Project in 2010 with a small group of

dedicated growers planting DC Soys following Processing Peas, Winter

Barley & Winter Wheat

• Documented production practices and crop development, collected

yield and weather data and captured field images during each season

• Primary focus was G X E X M, interactions within the system which

impacted success rate and profitability• Variety (maturity and plant type)

• Establishment methods

• Seeding rates

• Planting dates

• Yield enhancement techniques

• Grower co-operators: Matheson Farms, Vibrent Farms, Wrights Feed

and Seed, Donnelly Farms, Fraser Farms and Langstaff Farms

Processing Peas & DC Soybean Production System

• Can the system work

consistently, year-year,

• Can it increase

gross/net revenue per

acre?

Days from planting to flowering – 2012 Field Notes

S01-K8 (approximately 30 days)

S14-M4 (approximately 40 days)

Therefore total days required to reach physiological maturity is approx. 75 to 90+

days for double crop soys in Ontario. Day-length sensitivity does not completely

over-ride heat unit requirements in an ultra-short soybean production system

BMP for DC Soybean Production System

● Variety Selection – Maturity X Planting Date,

Taller Variety Down shift maturity approximately 0.75 - 2.0 maturity zones,

depending on planting date. Maturity compression does not

over-ride heat units required

● Plant into moisture, plant ASAP and

no-till if possibleYields decline +1.0 bu/day after July 1st

● Planting Rate & Row WidthIncrease pops with later planting dates, some

conditions may require up to 50% increase over

normal planting rates (Eg+250,000 seeds/acre).

Always “Solid Seed” where possible. Narrow rows

with high pops – Canopy Closure by 3rd to 4th

trifoliate (R1)

BMP for DC Soybean Production System

Factors Impacting Success Rate:

● Early Planting Date

- Before July 1st (>90%)

- July 1st to 10th (>80%)

- July 10 to 15th (>75%)

- Later than July 15th (<50%)

- Later than July 20th (green manure)

● Soil Health

- >4% Organic matter (+’ve)

- <3% Organic matter (-’ve)

● Plant RR Soys

- RR Herbicide Program

● Keep Crop Healthy

- Fungicide (Quilt, Trivapro)

REWARD VS “Managed” RISK

● DC Soybeans - Definitely possible North 40 0 Latitude

● DC Soybean Experience - “2010 – Present has been very positive”

● BMP for DC Soybean Production System – SW Ontario

- Have a plan:

- Identify best fit variety, secure seed early

- Adjust planting rate X planting date

- Focus on stand establishment
