dose of the covid on a prayer
TRANSCRIPT
Dear Members,
I was speaking to one of our members by
phone the other day. She was happy to
have been able to have received her first
dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. She said
she felt less stress and was beginning to become
hopeful of things getting back to a place where she felt
comfortable once again. I immediately thought of the
lyrics of a 1986 song by Bon Jovi (remember him?)
called, Livin’ on a Prayer.
The chorus goes:
“Oh, we've got to hold on, ready or not
You live for the fight when it's all that you've got
Woah, we're half way there!
Woah, livin' on a prayer”
For those of us who are still waiting on a vaccine, or
those who are just waiting for things to get back to a
sense of normal, better days are ahead. If you need to
talk to someone, we are here. If you need support in
some other manner, give us a call and one of our
senior center staff members will be happy to assist.
Enjoy a lovely St. Patrick’s Day. We will be all be very
happy once again when we are able to see each other
once again. In the meanwhile, remember, we’re half
way there!
Sincerely,
Leonora C. Rodriguez Executive Director

2 Milford Senior Center News March 2021
From the desk of the Editor, Eleanore Myers Turkington
This year Spring arrives Saturday March 20! Here at the Milford Senior Center one of the first signs of this welcome season is watching Maryann Hayes, Ahrens Program Assistant, venturing out into our garden to peek for the first Crocus! Maryann has a natural flair for caring for the lovely flower assortment we have all come to enjoy!
I’m sure there are many of us who are anxious to work in our gardens, whether they are large or small. Waiting for a beautiful flower to develop from a tightly wound bud into a colorful bloom is a pleasure not to be denied. I learned how to urge a tomato plant from an-inch-high fledgling to carrying a tiny basket of tomatoes to the kitchen table while a little girl of five. I never forgot the mornings of following my dad into our small backyard garden. Depression days taught us so much, including learning how to do without and the importance of family love.
These pandemic times have taught us the importance of yes, survival. We really have much to be thankful for and I really want to include the tenacity and fortitude of our staff at the Center. Frankly and personally, I can’t wait till we return to our full schedule. I miss greeting our members and sharing their experiences. I miss sitting at one of the dining room tables and chatting and laughing together. I miss hearing our chorus raising their voices in music.
It will happen again I am sure. Happy Spring everyone!

Staff Spotlights
Ann has been a member of the Milford Senior Center family and has been part of the Kitchen Staff since July of 2016. She had an extensive food preparation and service at St. Gabriel’s school for 11 years and following the closing of the school, decided she wanted to continue in this line of service at the Center.
Ann and husband Edward, Milford residents for 37 years, will be celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary this September and we are fortunate to have Ann on our kitchen staff.
Self-admitting, a home and family woman, Ann speaks highly of their three children, Diane, Jason and Michael along with two grandsons Nolan and Carter. She enjoys being creative with her crocheting needle and considers herself “A Home Body.”
Over the past five years, Ann has enjoyed the personal satisfaction from getting to know each member and is looking forward to when she can again meet them face to face. “ The interaction with members and staff makes it a pleasure to come to work each day.”
“My wish for the future is for my grandchildren to grow into a better world and to be happy at what they’re doing.”
What Paradise, California lost, Milford, Connecticut gained, for we are fortunate to have Tammy Gosney, Assistant Kitchen Supervisor as a member of our staff.
Tammy had a long career of providing childcare and following retirement in this field, she had an opportunity to participate in a volunteer program at the Milford Senior Center. Her smile and cheerful attitude gained the interest of her supervisor, Wendy Ferraro. Soon Tammy joined the Kitchen Staff.
Once Tammy joined the team she quickly discovered how to go with the flow and how to prepare and serve food to a large group of people. Since the arrival of the pandemic, the kitchen crew has been preparing and serving meals for hundreds of people each week.
Tammy’s positive approach to this new challenge provided her with personal satisfaction and an eagerness to begin every day with a happy and energetic spirit.
This spring and summer Tammy is looking forward to taking in the beauty of New England while enjoying her hobby of bicycle riding. Tammy, enjoy!

Happy St. Patrick’s Day from all of us in the
Milford Senior Center Kitchen!!
While corned beef and cabbage is the dish that is served on St. Patrick’s
Day all over the United States, it is not actually an Irish dish.
When the Irish immigrated to the U.S. they often lived alongside Jewish and Italian immigrants. It was at Jewish delis and lunch carts that the Irish
experienced corned beef and noticed its similarity to Irish bacon. Cooking the corned beef with cabbage was another choice based on cost efficiency.
Even better, the entire meal could be cooked in one pot making the dish cheap, easy to make, and
let’s not forget — tasty.
Here are some tips to make the perfect corned beef 1. Don’t forget to rinse off your brisket, it will cut down on the salt and no worries, you won ’t lose any
of the flavor. 2. Cook on low. Boiling a corned beef brisket will only make it tough and chewy. Cook on a gentle
simmer for tender meat. 3. Make sure you have enough liquid in the pan. The brisket needs to be covered completely with
water. Check often to make sure it is covered and add if necessary. 4. Be patient. It’s a tough cut of meat that benefits from a lengthy cook time. For stovetop cooking,
plan on at least three hours for a three-pound corned beef, or eight to 10 hours for a three- to four-pound cut that’s prepared on low in the slow cooker.
5. Always slice corned beef against the grain (rather than with it). Cutting through the muscle fibers shortens them, and makes each piece easier to chew.
Don’t forget dessert!! Irish soda bread with some butter and jam makes a delicious side to a cup of tea!
Irish shortbread, apple crumble and bread pudding are also some traditional Irish desserts!
Wendy Ferraro, Kitchen Supervisor
If you’re lucky enough to be Irish You’re lucky enough!

12 Milford Senior Center News March 2021
Women’s History Month is a celebration of women’s contributions to
history, culture and society and has been observed annually in the month of March in the United States since 1987.
Women’s History Month 2021 will take place
from Monday, March 1 to Wednesday, March 31st, 2021.
Women’s History Month is a dedicated month to reflect on the often-overlooked contributions of women to United States history from Abigail Adams to Susan B. Anthony, Sojourner Truth to
Rosa Parks, the timeline of women’s history milestones stretches back to the founding of the United States.
The actual celebration of Women’s History Month grew out of a weeklong celebration of women’s contributions to culture, history and society organized by the school district of Sonoma, California,
in 1978, Presentations were given at dozens of schools ,hundreds of students participated in a “Real Woman” essay contest and a parade was held in downtown Santa Rosa.
To coincide with Women’s History Month 2011 the White House issued a 50-year progress report
on the status of women in the United States. It found that younger women are now more likely than their male counterparts to hold a college degree and that the number of men and women in the
labor force has nearly equalized.
A few years later, the idea had caught on within communities, school districts and organizations across the country. In 1980 President Jimmy Carter issued the first presidential proclamation
declaring the week of March 8 as National Women’s History Week. The U.S. Congress followed suit the next year, passing a resolution establishing a national celebration.
Six years later, the National Women’s History Project successfully petitioned Congress to expand the event to the entire month of March.
