• DISASTER• On the basis of time duration and speed ,it is of two

types:• Slow onset disaster: prevails for many

days, months or even years like drought, famine.

• Rapid onset disaster: prevails for some time (instantaneous shock) like cyclone, flood.

• On the basis of cause, it is of two types:• Natural disaster: Event that is caused by

a natural hazard and leads to human, material, economic and environmental losses.

• Human induced disaster: A serious disruption of normal life triggered by a human induced hazard causing human, material, economic and environmental losses.

EARTHQUAKES

• An earthquake is a sudden violent shaking of Earth’s lithospheric plates. It is caused due to the movement of tectonic plates which results in a sudden release of energy accumulated in deformed rocks causing the ground to tremble or shake.
