Volunteer Profile

Name: Lizzy Emery

How long have you volunteered at Pepper Street and what do you like about it? I began volunteering in late 2009, because I enjoy spending time in creative places, and Pepper Street is a good place to gain experience in an arts centre!

What is your favourite art style/form and why? Early 20th Century art, photography, and Romanticism would be my favourites. I am also very interested in art history and am currently undertaking studies at the South Australian School of Art.

Artist of the Month JuneHelen Mickan - Mixed Media2 June - 2 July

Artist of the Month JulyVal Grapentin - Pen and Ink Drawings/Printed Bowls7 July - 1 August

“Hello, I’m Helen.

After retiring from a busy teaching career in art and music, during which I taught at 14 different schools and colleges here and overseas, including opening 6 new art departments, I have continued to keep busy by developing my arts practice here in Adelaide.

Courses and Master classes at the Adelaide Central School of Art, under the tuition of Rod Taylor, Anna Platten, Christopher Orchard, Daryl Austin, Gishka Van Ree, Arthur Phillips, and several others, have inspired me. My morning retirement pleasure of reading art books, while gazing into my courtyard with a cup of freshly brewed coffee in hand, is another influence observable in my work.

Recently I have been reading about and concentrating on 20th and 21st century artists such as Jon Schueler, Adja Yunkers, Alan Mitelman and Anslem Keifer.

The series of works I am displaying this month are inspired by Anslem Kiefers’ ‘Heavenly Palaces Series’. I have used ash (charcoal), acrylic and tissue paper in this series of small works titled ‘Heavenly Spaces’.

I hope you enjoy my journey….”

“I have been passionate about the artform of illustration since I was 13 years old… and some 60 years on I continue to find myself drawn to it!

Originally I studied at the Jesse Boots College in England, specializing in illustration and ‘craft’. Taking a break for motherhood and 5 children, I then resumed Art school in Adelaide, completing a Diploma of Art, majoring in Printmaking and Painting. This was at the North Adelaide School of Art.

The selection of works in my artist of the month display are based on visits to various parks and reserves around Adelaide, the Adelaide Hills and the Botanic Gardens. Ten, A4 framed works are complemented by a range of my printed bowls. These are made of hand-printed, handmade cast paper, reassembled into bowls. Scenes on these bowls may be from nature and/or historical buildings, also reflecting my love of working outdoors, creating drawings direct from the subject.

I hope you enjoy my showcased works.”
