How to Train Your Dragon Movie Score Listening Exercise

Listen to the two audio clips below. Do not tell students the name of the movie or of the individual scenesyou will likely get a better variety of answers that way!

Romantic Flight audio Test Drive audio

For each scene, have the students write a few sentences (or discuss) what they think is happening in the movie while this music is playing. Ask them to pay attention to the following elements when they consider their answers:

Tempo (fast or slow) Dynamics (loud or quiet) Orchestration (what kind of instruments are playing, are many or few instruments

    playing)

Ask some leading questions about the scene:

What kind of characters are in this scene (e.g. hero or villain)? What emotions do they have (happy, sad, excited, etc.)? What sort of action or activity do you think is going on?

After students have talked about their answers, watch the video clips so students can see what is going on. Remind them that this exercise is not about guessing the right movie, or the right activities onscreen, but about using the music as a clue to whats happening, and to heighten the viewers emotions while watching.
