A 1964 graduate of Maumee Valley Hospital School of Nursing, Dottie Hussain was a nurse par excellence whose professional career spanned 32 years as a staff nurse and a critical care nurse. At various times, she worked at Maumee Valley Hospital, Toledo (the forerunner of Medical College of Ohio Hospital and, presently, The University of Toledo Medical Center), Detroit General Hospital and St. Vincent Medical Center, Toledo. She concluded her nursing career as a critical care nurse in the emergency department at The University of Toledo Medical Center. She was widely known and recognized as a conscientious nurse

who taught and mentored a generation of young nurses, medical students and residents. She also was known for patient advocacy and championing patients’ rights. Twice, she was honored by the University Medical Center with the prestigious Nursing Excellence Award for her nursing acumen, her passion for the profession and her willingness to deliver beyond the call of duty. In 1994, she was invited as a visiting lecturer to the First Teaching Hospital in Beijing and West China University of Medical Sciences in Chengdu, China. She was a cosmopolitan woman who traveled the world with her surgeon-writer husband, Dr. S. Amjad Hussain, and moved seamlessly between different cultures and traditions. Together, they had three children and two grandchildren. Dottie Hussain passed away Dec. 2, 2006, at age 62 of ovarian cancer. This Distinguished Lectureship was established in her honor through the Hussain Family Fund at the Toledo Community Foundation.

Educational Objectives

Discuss the benefits of collaborative interprofessional health care teams to improve the healthand wellness of underserved local and international communities.

Program PurposeThe primary purpose of this program is to enhance knowledge on the interprofessional practices among health care professionals to improve the health and wellness of individuals with pancreatic cancer.

Needs StatementThe development of interprofessional health care teams has received growing attention throughout the past two decades. It has become increasingly evident that no one profession possesses all the skills and knowledge necessary for providing care to patients with complex health care problems. Interdisciplinary teams provide an effective approach to improve the health and wellness of individuals with pancreatic cancer.
